Aldi Turkey - Rotten

Anyone else had a minging turkey from Aldi? Bought on Tuesday, use-by date 26/12. Opened the bag and was hit by a foul stench. Skin was slimy too 🤢.
Looking on Twitter, there are quite a few similar posts - all with the same free-range turkey with the same use-by date, so guess there was a dodgy batch Xmas Sad.

Ah well, my vegetarian lunch was actually ok and was received kindly by my guests.

I’m not surprised I went to Aldi Thursday and the amount of fresh items with packaging that had split or started to come away was shocking. I think Aldi has had an issue with sealing meat in packaging for a while as we’ve had a fair few chickens that haven’t smelt right in the past. I’ve given up taking the risk anymore.

@SnarkyBag It will teach me not to use a proper butcher. Our town's butcher has recently retired and we don't have one locally anymore. The Aldi one had good reviews so I thought I'd give that a go to save a trip to another town.

Every year there are stories of rotten supermarket turkeys. Complain to Aldi (I know there's nothing they can do now but they needed to know).

Cookerhood · 25/12/2021 22:05

Although I do often find with poultry it smells awful when you first unwrap it.

whenwillthemadnessend · 25/12/2021 22:07

We had a lovely Aldi turkey. No issues.

nannybeach · 25/12/2021 22:09

Apparently M and S and other stores had problems. Pictures of green parts on turkeys, foul smelling and some costing over £70. Maybe they all came from the same source

prudencepuffin · 25/12/2021 22:15

A friend of mine had same. Not edible.

HunterGatherer · 25/12/2021 22:38

Happened to us a few times with Sainsburys and Tescos so we buy a frozen one now.

Handsnotwands · 25/12/2021 22:44

Hang on tuesday was 5 days ago. What do you expa”etc? and actually if you expect it ‘fresh’ or days later there’s some weird shit involved. Buy frozen it close to the actual date of eating

Quornflakegirl · 25/12/2021 22:50

I always freezer chicken or turkey on the day of purchase unless I’m using the very next day. Poultry goes off so very easily and their use by dates can’t be relied on.

Minniem2020 · 25/12/2021 23:04

Not turkey but I did ruin my pudding by pouring cream all over it which I didn't realise had gone off until it was too late. Unopened and dated the 27th.

Longingforatikihut · 25/12/2021 23:04

What's the supplier company? Two sisters supply lots of the big stores and are notoriously dodgy. I never buy anything with their logo on.

NinaDefoe · 25/12/2021 23:10

I was reading that overstocking your fridge stops the air from circulating and makes it harder for the fridge or freezer to maintain the correct temperature. Very easy fir the meat to go off.

I guess this could happen at any point... refrigerated transport to the shop, overstocked shelves in the shop, overstocked fridge at home... Who knows!

We ordered from Field and Flower this year. Consistently excellent. Same quality (and prices) as a high end butcher, delivered to the door on 23rd.

What now? Confused If I was OP and bought a turkey with a use by date of 26/12, I'd expect to still be able to use it on 25/12.
Benjispruce5 · 25/12/2021 23:15

Bought a fresh free range bronze turkey from Aldi on Monday. Date was 26/12 I think. Cost £25. Was the best turkey I’ve had. Everyone commented on how nice it was.

HelloBunny · 25/12/2021 23:17

26/12 would be cutting it fine, for me.

RJnomore1 · 25/12/2021 23:38

Cutting it fine for what?

SocialConnection · 25/12/2021 23:51

Complain. They need to know - your disappointment could be someone else's food poisoning and worse. If it's a supply, labelling or storage issue, they have to deal with it.

Same issues every Christmas... Seriously, what do people expect when they buy a dead corpse to eat?! 🤦🏼‍♀️Flesh decomposes 🤮

Unlike vegetables which stay fresh forever...
Coughee · 25/12/2021 23:57

Perhaps where people are going wrong is buying a DEAD corpse. Maybe try an alive one next year and see if it stays fresh for longer?

Really? Biscuit

Op you are not being unreasonable. Turkey is not cheap and I would expect a turkey with that date purchased on Tues to be ok for Christmas day

Grin Tis a good valid comment this

IKR. No such issues with my vegan Xmas dinner and was delicious. 😜

The turkeys got their revenge. 😂
