Aldi Turkey - Rotten

ffscovid · 25/12/2021 20:35

Anyone else had a minging turkey from Aldi? Bought on Tuesday, use-by date 26/12. Opened the bag and was hit by a foul stench. Skin was slimy too 🤢.
Looking on Twitter, there are quite a few similar posts - all with the same free-range turkey with the same use-by date, so guess there was a dodgy batch Xmas Sad.

Ah well, my vegetarian lunch was actually ok and was received kindly by my guests.

But fridges Re opened and closed constantly. Whether over crowded or not.

Bettyboopawoop · 26/12/2021 13:43

I've bought chicken from Aldi before which has a good 5 day's date on it gone to cook it and it's been utterly disgusting never bought meat there since

This one wasn't. The only thing in it was the turkey, the sausages, bacon and the Christmas veg so it wasn't opened at all from when they were put in there until yesterday morning.

Non lidl/aldi users who have stopped using them after experiences of their food not lasting etc are usually told their expectations are too high, fresh stuff isn't meant to last and we should be concerned as ti what's done to it to make it last longer.

However regular users are told that they indeed are not being unreasonable expecting food to last.

Honestly I think regardless of supermarket that expecting poultry in particular to last so close to its date Is wishful thinking tbh.

I do also think that perhaps the dates should be less ambitious when put on the lable.

Customers open and close the fridges all day every day or they are left in open fronted chillers for days. I always think its a huge gamble.

Benjispruce5 · 26/12/2021 14:36

I shop in Aldi weekly and have never had a problem with food not lasting. I have had to take chicken back to Tesco’s twice, however.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 26/12/2021 15:07

I had this with a chicken from Sainsburys. It was well within its use by date, but when we opened it, eugh. Fortunately it has only happened once, and not around a special occasion.

We get our turkey from a butchers each year and it's always good (and not wrapped in plastic). It comes from the Usk area.

JuergenSchwarzwald · 26/12/2021 15:09

I would say the opposite - I think most foods are good for a few days longer, but suppliers are too worried about being sued, so they put ridiculously short use by dates on. I am always struck my how long the use-by dates are on my German friend's stuff compared with ours.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 26/12/2021 15:33

@Omicrone

Why do people always think that using the word 'corpse' is going to put people off eating meat? As if we don't know what meat is?!

The Aldi turkey thing has been all over FB this morning, sounds pretty disgusting and such a shame. I always get my corpse from Tesco, use by date of 26/12 and have never had any problems.

Exactly. I’m so bored of the growing hostility towards people who eat meat. Sorry but I enjoy eating meet will continue to keep doing so. I was t the supermarket the other day and a teenager remarked to his dad “look dead shoes” pointing at the boots I was wearing. It’s getting ridiculous. If anything it makes me enjoy eating meat even more…
beenthereboughtthetshirt · 26/12/2021 16:20

@Medievalist

Our Sainsbury's joint of beef corpse was dead good. Only £10 too.

Cheap meat does not generally equate to ethical and humane farming.

It was delicious and within our small budget this year.

Plus it was grass fed Irish beef so higher in Omega3 than British.

PizzaCrust · 26/12/2021 16:38

Our locally sourced turkey from the local butcher was lovely. Properly fresh and amazing year after year. People come from far and wide to order and buy one of their turkeys.

I wouldn’t risk it with a fresh supermarket turkey.

A packet of apples or biscuits maybe. Raw chicken pork or fish? Not so much.

And anything at Xmas which would have been picked up, put back , studied with the doors of the chiller open more than any other time.of the year?

Not the time to take the gamble really.

PaulGallico · 26/12/2021 18:33

Some very smug people on this thread

Lady089 · 26/12/2021 18:49

@beenthereboughtthetshirt

So it’s ok as long as it was delicious and within your price range. It doesn’t matter if it’s unethical because it’s not affecting you, cognitive dissonance going on there.

beenthereboughtthetshirt · 27/12/2021 01:36

correct

nocoolnamesleft · 27/12/2021 01:53

Officious vegetarians and/or vegans going on about eating dead corpses makes me want to eat more meat just to piss them off.

Medievalist · 27/12/2021 01:56

@Lady089

Sadly the world is full of people who couldn't give a toss about animal welfare or the planet - so long as they can enjoy a bit of cheap meat.

Medievalist · 27/12/2021 01:59

Officious vegetarians and/or vegans going on about eating dead corpses makes me want to eat more meat just to piss them off.

On you go then. We can't actually see what you're doing though, so not quite sure how you're going to piss anyone off ....

PigletInABlanketJohn · 27/12/2021 02:16

I had one that I suppose was on the turn.

It was in a roasting bag so I didn't notice until it was done.

Annoyingly I used the cooking juices in the gravy, and spoiled that. Couldn't even have parsnips, roasties, sprouts etc with gravy.

I have emailed Aldi.

I suppose there must have been a failure in the chill chain.

Heads will roll.

caringcarer · 27/12/2021 02:17

I bought a frozen one but Xmas Eve dropped into Aldi to pick up a tub of cream and got a bargain turkey crown for 75 percent off so it cost a little over £6. Sell by date 26th and it was lovely.

Hawkins001 · 27/12/2021 02:19

Sounds like a traditional butchers and a freezer,

safariboot · 27/12/2021 02:24

The dirty little secret is the food packagers just change the dates in order to sell stuff that the rules say should be discarded. Usually they get away with it because the rules err on the safe side. Sometimes they don't and you open a pack and it's gone off.

And the militant vegans shouldn't think for one minute that plant products are any different.

FoggySpecs · 27/12/2021 02:37

I bought a bistro salad from Aldi use by 27th Dec and it was slimy. Ugh

BooseysMom · 27/12/2021 04:53

Heads will roll.

Sadly very unlikely and every year there will be off turkeys as a result.

AutomaticMoon · 27/12/2021 05:29

@Dontgetyerknicksinatwist ‘dead shoes’ - wtf! And his dad said what? I suppose he was proud of his rude son? I’ve also had bad experiences with vegans on the high horse. I was vegetarian for most of my life and my health was utterly dire, I started eating beef again and feel much better. There’s a tonne of research showing vegan and vegetarian diet is harmful long term, especially to mental health. There’s loads of interviews on yt with people who say they damaged their bodies being vegan for years, etc. Sorry to get conspiratorial, but apparently it has been decides by the UN that by 2050 we must all eat only one steak per month, they call it ‘flexitarian’ diet. I don’t understand how cow farts are more harmful to the planet than pesticides and polyester pollution, etc. Actual toxic things. Planting trees should help if co2 is the problem but ‘they’ insist that’s not it and waste billions building carbon capture plants. I thought plants are the best carbon capture plants!

On the topic of Aldi meat, I get beef from there and it’s great. I don’t trust chicken anymore, sadly, after I was informed that they have to do something to it to get rid of its ‘fishy’ taste 😳 Was just wondering yesterday whether turkey might not be as bad?!

But I just don’t understand why beef lasts so much better/longer than poultry?! You don’t get aged poultry, do you?

AutomaticMoon · 27/12/2021 05:35

If anyone interested in nutrition, Weston A Price was a dentist and nutrition researcher, he wrote about how the advent of the modern diet ruined dentition and general bone structure development in the face/jaw. He studied tribal people and the degeneration of the jaws, as sugar and refined flours were introduced and animal fats replaced with vegetable oils. And Nina Teicholz wrote about corruption in the development of nutritional guidelines, in particular the promotion of margarine as a health product even though the evidence now shows, it’s not particularly healthy. Butter on the other hand, has Vit K2 which is vital for healthy bones.
