Well, Morrison's cancelled my christmas delivery

After telling me it would be 2 hours late, so keeping me waiting until after the store was closed (got stuck with the last slot as got no notification about them opening the bloody bookings so had to take the dregs). Now I get to go shopping on christmas eve, which is particularly wonderful as I'm CEV. Obviously all tomorrows slots are long gone, the earliest I can rebook is the 27th.

Thankfully all xmas dinner is bought already as I've read so many warning posts about subs. But we still need 'normal' food for the next few days.

They'd better be planning a serious apology gesture to all the customers who got let down. At least they didn't make the driver work until 2am, which would be objectively worse!

OP posts:
CovidCorvid · 24/12/2021 07:31

Never crossed my mind to tip the delivery driver. I don’t tip the checkout person either!

RosieLemonade · 24/12/2021 07:36

We went at 6am yesterday. It was busy not heaving. Just get what you can't be without and try again on the 27th.

Monkeybutt1 · 24/12/2021 07:37

My dad was an Asda delivery driver for years, they are not meant to accept tips.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/12/2021 07:38

I don't tip the delivery driver. If we tipped everyone on minimum wage we would be tipping a lot of people. But I do always thank them.

gloriousgolden · 24/12/2021 07:40

OP, I went shopping yesterday and it was a lot less hellish than it usually is, covid has obviously had an impact on peoples desire to shop!

dottiedodah · 24/12/2021 07:41

Went to sb about 7 am .quite quiet! Have always gone about 6.30 7.00 .seemed busier in prev years .go have a cup of tea and biccie and have nap and breakfast when home .

ThinWomansBrain · 24/12/2021 07:41

IT'S ONE DAY! I appreciate it's irritating, but if you have Christmas dinner organised, is there anything that you desperately need before 27th?

getir/gorriaz etc mostly operate in urban areas - last time I looked I had about 8 options.(which may not be helpful depending where you live)

Also, many of the mini Supermarkets will be open on boxing day, some stay open on CHristmas day. - and often independent 'corner' shops where the owners don't celebrate christmas open anyway, as do service stations. - and they will be desperately quiet - or you can schedule a delivery for 27th.

TheHoptimist · 24/12/2021 07:43

@GrannytoaUnicorn

Morrisons royally screwed us over as well! Everything remotely Christmas related was marked as out of stock, despite having had it all ordered & finalised for months! So I had to rush to supermarket at teatime in a panic. I know Morrisons don't pick from their stores but it was irritating to find everything I order in plentiful supply in the store!
they do pick from stores they used Ocado until about a year ago but now stores
incognitodorrito · 24/12/2021 07:44

@Kimchi

My sibling is a delivery driver for Asda and earns minimum wage. He is absolutely exhausted from all the deliveries with no proper breaks. He said he only got one tip yesterday. Please remember to be kind to your delivery drivers who are really under the pump.
I was told by my driver that they aren’t allowed to accept tips ?
gamerchick · 24/12/2021 07:44

Just go early. Like now.

MadisonAvenue · 24/12/2021 07:53

@CovidCorvid

We have a different driver pretty much every week, and I’d never seen the one before who delivered to us yesterday.
Suzi888 · 24/12/2021 07:59

Just eat? I’ve never used it, just a thought.

exLtEveDallas · 24/12/2021 07:59

I did mine at Tesco at 6am this morning. It wasn’t busy, but the shop itself looked like people are planning for another lockdown - lots of empty shelves. Could just be waiting for restock, but I asked an assistant where I could find the Xmas puddings and she said “you won’t, we’ve sold out and won’t get any more” (she was a little shirty, but I decided that I’d be shirty too working at 6:30 on Xmas eve, so she can have a pass!)

I got everything I needed, but there was a def shortage of certain things - cream, prawns, desserts, pate (all chiller things seemed limited). This is the first year in about 6/7 that I’ve seen it like this.

BananaPant · 24/12/2021 08:04

Oh man. That sucks.

I hope by now op you have been and got your shopping and are home again. Bless you.

We had Waitrose deliveries this year. Absolutely faultless and there was one item they couldn't provide , so they emailed me earlier this week letting me know and sent me a gift card as way of apology.

Fabulous service. ❤️

godmum56 · 24/12/2021 08:04

when it happened a few years with waitrose, the drivers did work through a lot, if not all of the night and got a jolly good bonus for doing so...also all the customers affected were given chocolates or wine as an apology.

gloriousgolden · 24/12/2021 08:05

@exLtEveDallas that isn't people panic buying for a lockdown 😂 it's xmas eve, that's perhaps why they're out of prawns/cream and desserts.

FWIW we are farmers and supply Morrisons. Our buying group did say back in September that supermarket buying would be down by 20% on previous years due to anticipating reduced parties and celebration on account of lockdown, which is why there might be a shortage of things?

ChimChimeny · 24/12/2021 08:07

is there anything that you desperately need before 27th?

For us it's stuff like milk and fruit, we get through a lot and I don't really want to even be going shopping on 27th

DobbyTheHouseElk · 24/12/2021 08:08

I’ve never tipped the delivery driver. I didn’t think they accepted tips?

driftcompatible · 24/12/2021 08:12

A TIP? I'm always very thankful to my delivery people but no way am I tipping. I'm paying for my shopping and delivery and often have just enough to cover that. A TIP?! Honestly I'm sick of this hand out mentality. If someone isn't tipping they are rude.

I might as well have a money canon in front of my house jetting money into the garden. Tip the post person, the refuse collectors, supermarket delivery drivers, the council gardener who cuts the verge, Amazon delivery, ETC.

No one tips me and I wouldn't expect it.

Madcats · 24/12/2021 08:13

That's such bad luck OP.

Before you plan your supermarket swoop maybe have a look at the traffic on Google maps (that might be a good indicator of busy stores best avoided).

I nipped into town yesterday to buy a few bits. I was one of two customers in Iceland (unheard of). The cashier reckoned that people had bought early and small, expecting a lockdown.

Thinking back, Waitrose seemed much quieter than the usual Christmas rush a couple of days ago too.

BarkminsterBlue · 24/12/2021 08:14

OP, if you look up your local supermarket on the Google Maps app and then scroll down past the opening times, reviews etc, it will give you live information on how busy it is right now compared to normal. Here is my local Tesco superstore as an example. You might already have gone but it is useful:

Well, Morrison's cancelled my christmas delivery
exLtEveDallas · 24/12/2021 08:17

@gloriousgolden I would agree with you, but as I said, I’ve been doing a 6am Xmas Eve shop for 7 years now (6 at this particular Tesco) and I’ve never seen empty shelves before. Not even last year. It just struck me as different this year.

I’m thinking now it’s more likely that Tesco (in general) aren’t overstocking the way they used to, especially this year with the two days after Xmas being short hours.

Sparklingbrook · 24/12/2021 08:18

I was at Morrison's for 6am this morning. Hardly any customers but shelves were full of all staples, and loads of bread.
I think Christmas Eve is leaving it late to get stuff like a Christmas pudding or cake. I do feel a bit sorry for staff in retail today.

KatieKat88 · 24/12/2021 08:21

Go to the Co-op - won't be as busy as big stores. Or send DH?

WombatChocolate · 24/12/2021 08:34

Just to give a positive, my Tesco order came yesterday. It was booked for 8am, driver outside at 7.50am, and just 1 item was subbed. I waved to driver out of window so he knew he could deliver early and it was all in the fridge/away by 8.05am and I went back to bed.

So sorry for those of you who have been left high and dry and it’s major items missing or the whole shop.
I do think though that the vast majority of orders work out well. No consolation for those it hasn’t I know.

And re deliveries generally rather than Christmas, early morning slots usually result in less subs. Less time for the items to run out.

Hope you get some joy with your deliveries/shops today. Quite a few shops don’t book Christmas Eve deliveries so they can sort out the fails.
