After telling me it would be 2 hours late, so keeping me waiting until after the store was closed (got stuck with the last slot as got no notification about them opening the bloody bookings so had to take the dregs). Now I get to go shopping on christmas eve, which is particularly wonderful as I'm CEV. Obviously all tomorrows slots are long gone, the earliest I can rebook is the 27th.

Thankfully all xmas dinner is bought already as I've read so many warning posts about subs. But we still need 'normal' food for the next few days.

They'd better be planning a serious apology gesture to all the customers who got let down. At least they didn't make the driver work until 2am, which would be objectively worse!

If it makes you feel any better

  • shopping can really decrease on Christmas Eve
  • wear a FFP2 mask or very fitted mask - and shops are still very low risk. (As people generally masked, not talking, not in for that long, not close)
Sorka · 24/12/2021 02:54

Go early. I went this evening and it was horrible. Customers everywhere, trying to buy things they don’t normally buy so standing gormlessly in the aisles staring at shelves with their mouths slightly ajar. This was not helped by reduced aisle space due to displays in the middle of the aisles and the (necessary but in the way) big trolley things being used to restock the shelves. There were also quite a few sold out things as it was hard for the shelf stackers to keep up.

@RestingPandaFace

Very first thing as soon as it opens. When our supermarket was 24 hour pre-Covid I used to go about quarter to six before work.

Yep same here. Just before first lockdown when I couldn't get any delivery slots I'd turn up at Sainsbury's at 7am to a fully stocked store to get groceries for my family. Good luck OP. 🌹

@SilverDragonfly1

Thank you, I appreciate the sympathy :)

I could actually do with some advice- is it better to go as early as possible or a bit later in the day when it will be busier but they might have done a re-stock?

Got to go to bed now, but will be up early to check replies.

I'd say go very early. They are unlikely to do a restock during the day - don't take a chance on it anyway.
Chocaholic9 · 24/12/2021 03:28

I'm really sorry OP. That is completely unacceptable.

phishy · 24/12/2021 03:44

Are supermarkets still only allowing the vulnerable in store in the first hour?

PyongyangKipperbang · 24/12/2021 03:45

Xmas Eve afternoon is the quietest time.....trust me on this! I have spent years perfecting the "Xmas food shop" and even 4am on Xmas Eve is manic because everyone else has the same idea! I go about 1pm on Xmas Eve and its great because not only is it quiet, if you time it right, you get some EPIC reductions which will be even better this year as theya re closed on Boxing day so the dates will cover you until the shops are open again :)

Oh and I work in retail now so I fully support the Boxing Day Off thing and hope it continues after this year. Any one know if Next have deigned to give their poor staff the day off instead of coming in at 3am to sell shite to saddos with naff all else to do?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/12/2021 03:55

Two years ago I went to Asda at 3am on the 24th as it was the only place open and I was queuing overnight for an event and needed the loo. It was absolutely deserted. It would have been a great time to do the Christmas shop.

SugarHorse · 24/12/2021 04:04

@Magnited

We have a 24 hour Tesco around here so I decided to try it rather than book online. I wake early so was in there at 4am this morning and what a hive of activity hundreds of people dashing about picking to fulfil orders. It felt a bit claustrophobic negotiating the trolleys and boxes. The only downside was stopping at the cashpoint on the way out to withdraw £100. I stuffed it in my back pocket as I was pushing the trolley back to my car, but when I get home its gone. Just should have pushed it down further.
That's absolutely rotten luck about losing your £100, @Magnited. You never know, maybe someone will hand it in, I certainly would if I found it - do check in at the store just in case. Hope your Christmas improves from that bad start Xmas SmileThanks

Morrisons royally screwed us over as well! Everything remotely Christmas related was marked as out of stock, despite having had it all ordered & finalised for months! So I had to rush to supermarket at teatime in a panic. I know Morrisons don't pick from their stores but it was irritating to find everything I order in plentiful supply in the store!

Immaculatemisconception · 24/12/2021 04:43

The supermarkets around here were absolutely heaving yesterday. We needed some last minute bits, in the end we got what we needed from the Co-op corner shop. It was almost empty of people but surprisingly well stocked. We got everything we needed.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 24/12/2021 05:02

Have you spoken to them? Tescos delayed then cancelled our Christmas shop once (driver became unwell and had to stop). They phoned me and delivered it the next day, Christmas Eve.

GettingStuffed · 24/12/2021 05:13

I went shopping yesterday and the longest queue was 2 people

JurassicShay · 24/12/2021 05:16

OP if it's Morrisons your going to I would go to the front desk first & see if they can help you with what's happening with your order before you buy anything as it could still turn up today.

Asda subbed about 25 items & 7 unavailable on my delivery yesterday. So I am off to Tesco about 7.30, it opened at midnight so I'm hoping I will have missed the early rush.

Not looking forward to it, single parent household & non driver so I have to take a bus & the 7 & 1 year old. Wish me luck!

Go early. Very few people drag themselves out of bed early and you get the best chance of them being well stocked.

Nat6999 · 24/12/2021 05:43

Ds went to Sainsbury's at 6.00am yesterday morning, it was heaving, I would go to a 24 hour tesco about now if I needed anything else.

Maskless · 24/12/2021 05:46

If I were you I'd buy all the meat, bread, cakes and veg from small local privately owned shops, and get the rest from Morrisons on Amazon Prime, which does free same day delivery.

Gretaburley · 24/12/2021 06:01

If your dh is picky then let him do the shop.

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 24/12/2021 06:04

I'm a Sainsbury's online picker, my last shift was yesterday. Don't go when the shops open, lots of people were doing that thinking they would miss the rush at 6am which actually caused a rush, combined with the night shift still having an hour of replenishment to do and all us pickers rushing round it was chaotic. At 7am night shift go home and the first wave of customers had finished so it was pretty quiet then.

Beautiful3 · 24/12/2021 06:58

I'm sorry to hear that. That's bad luck. I've just had my delivery now. Missing pork pie, cream and dip. Off to the corner shop that opens at 7am. I genuinely don't understand how things are out-of stock, when they've been ordered in advance. @Magnited that's awful. Could you not quickly drive back and look. You might find it?

user97533676 · 24/12/2021 07:01

@Kimchi

My sibling is a delivery driver for Asda and earns minimum wage. He is absolutely exhausted from all the deliveries with no proper breaks. He said he only got one tip yesterday. Please remember to be kind to your delivery drivers who are really under the pump.
Always be kind but no one should be expecting tips, it's not an entitlement.
User762980 · 24/12/2021 07:05

Christmas Eve afternoon is quiet as that is too late if you want specific Christmas things but I see you have your Christmas dinner in so it is fine for normal shopping

My friends son is a driver for Tesco, he’s been working 14 hour shifts this week, and doubling up shelf stocking after he finishes. The staff are dropping like flies.

Morrison's do pick from the store where I am.
