Long distance Xmas - kids' presents?!

DH and I live a long way away from both of our families, but so far we have tended to alternate between spending Christmas between my family and his, spending around a week away due to the travel times. But now we have a LO, I'm starting to wonder how the hell do you manage children's presents if you do a long-distance Christmas? There's just so many of them, there's no way we could fit them all in the car! This year I don't think it'll be an issue as she's still too young to have any expectations, so I am thinking we will open all the gifts we've already received before we set off, and so we'll just bring her Father Christmas presents to open on Christmas Day.

But in subsequent years I wonder if that might be a bit disappointing and anticlimactic... just wondering what everyone else does really, who's in that situation...

Part of the reason we don't visit family at Christmas. Time for them to come to you? No way would I fit them all in the car and part of the excitement is seeing them all piled up on Christmas morning. Not in dribs & drabs.

We never travelled to family, the grandparents came to us or we went the weekend before and exchanged gifts then, the only presents DD was allowed to open before Christmas.
