DH has talked me into getting a joint of gammon for Christmas lunch ...

What do I do with it? We already have a large chicken (no one is that keen on turkey), but I can't see how gammon "goes" with all the other stuff, particularly gravy!

Any tips/suggestions most welcome.

Course it does - it's an option with beef and turkey at our local carvery.
Alternatively, I have done it before with peas and potato dauphinoise, no gravy. Have also had with pineapple, egg and roast tatties and mushroom-onion-courgette mix. But at the carvery, we add it to the other meat and chuck gravy all over it. No different to having gravy on your piggies in blankets.

Gammon is brilliant with a roast

Floralnomad · 19/12/2021 16:16

We always have a choice of gammon or turkey on Christmas Day , then pork on Boxing Day . I’m the only one who eats beef so we don’t bother

Icantremembermyusername · 19/12/2021 16:18

We always had a gammon joint along with turkey at Christmas. My folks weren't the most affluent. It 'stretched' the turkey and was used in the days after for sandwiches, buffet, soup. I always ate my turkey with gravy etc and then had ham with cranberry sauce.

maffhew · 19/12/2021 16:19

Stick it in the slow cooker with honey and mustard. It draws all the salt out and it tastes delicious. I often do it for Sunday lunch so it definitely goes with gravy.

Imagine a chicken and ham pie, they go together there, roast chicken and gammon together isn't strange!

WeAllHaveWings · 19/12/2021 16:20

We have had gammon before at Christmas with the turkey and while it is not out of place, it is better as the star of its own show. We keep ours for boxing day.

If you are going for the full turkey, sausage meat, stuffing, pigs in blankets and all the sides then imo gammon as well is OTT and flavour wise can overpower the rest.

Megacervixosaurus · 19/12/2021 16:24

Hand the gammon over to your DH to sort out seeing as he was the one that wanted it.

MoodySky · 19/12/2021 16:33

Thanks people. It's obviously just me who doesn't fancy it with gravy then! We wanted a second meat, as we're having chicken, so some people may only have gammon, and I was concerned that I ought to do something else to go with it. Shan't bother now Grin.

@Megacervixosaurus I would rope DH in, but I hate anyone interfering if I'm cooking - he cooked Christmas dinner last year while I drank lots of wine relaxed with the family.

Honey glaze and cloves yum! Or cook in cola. Loads of ways to cook a Christmas ham!

Slowchimes · 19/12/2021 16:43

We have the gammon on boxing day.

Delia Smith has a good recipe with timings but she starts off by soaking it and then throw the water away (gets rid of salt) then simmers it in cider for a while for tenderness. Then drains it and scores the rind, stick the cloves in the rind, and covers rind in mix of honey and brown sugar , then stick the whole lot in the oven, which glazes the skin. Bit of a palava but it tastes good and lasts a good three or four days if you have visitors. I love it with parsley sauce and new potatoes. But very good in sandwiches with mustard, or as cold cuts with salads , cheese and chutneys.

twoofusburningmatches · 19/12/2021 16:45

Ham is (one of) the best parts of Christmas dinner! Boil it, then cover with mustard and brown sugar and roast it for 30-45 mins. It is amazing.

GemmaRuby · 19/12/2021 16:45

Slow cooker in cola - means it doesn’t take up valuable oven or hob space. (or in a pan if you don’t have a slow cooker).

Waitwhat23 · 19/12/2021 16:48

Stick it in a big pot and pour over a bottle of cider, add two Bay leaves and top up with water. Boil for an hour then take out and put in a deep baking tray. Pour half a carton of orange juice into the baking tray. Pour some maple syrup over the joint and then sprinkle some brown sugar over the top. Bake in oven at low temp for about an hour. Lovely with horseradish sauce.

Waitwhat23 · 19/12/2021 16:48

Ooh, cover with tinfoil when going in the oven so it's steamed by the orange juice.

DramaAlpaca · 19/12/2021 16:49

We always have turkey and ham together at Christmas and it works with chicken too. It's DH's tradition rather than mine so he gets to cook it. He does it on Christmas Eve using Delia Smith's recipe and we reheat slices on Christmas Day to go with dinner and have it in sandwiches for the next few days.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 19/12/2021 16:50

It’s a amazing cooked in coke. Amazing. I use nigellas recipe.

Xiaoxiong · 19/12/2021 16:51

I'm doing a gammon for Christmas Eve with cauliflower cheese and a green salad, maybe potatoes dauphinois as well. I'm either doing the Nigella one in coke, or her one with the molasses and cloves. Then we can have any leftovers cold on Boxing Day with piccalilli and gherkins in sandwiches!

katcatkat · 19/12/2021 16:56

We do a gammon joint with jacket potatoes and braised red cabbage on Christmas eve all fits in the oven together to cook low and slow while we get on with other stuff plus plenty of nice cold meat for days following Christmas so I don't need to cook.

ShowOfHands · 19/12/2021 16:59

We do Delia's recipe every year and it's flipping delicious. I've been veggie for 3yrs now and it's one of the only things I miss.

We do turkey, beef and ham on Christmas day.

Turkey or gammon?? You need both lol. Turkey, ham and pork stuffing here for the win. Every pub/restaurant where I live does Turkey, ham and stuffing together you can't really get one without the other
GertrudeBElion · 19/12/2021 17:03

I'm a bit like you OP, I don't like gammon with gravy but I always do one because everyone else likes it, and it's an absolute must for Boxing Day leftovers

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 19/12/2021 17:04

Gammon and parsley sauce! Has to be done. This is usually Christmas Eve meal with left overs on Boxing Day.

RJnomore1 · 19/12/2021 17:04

I’d suggest making sure you have cauli cheese and peas as two of your veg options but the potatoes gravy etc will all be lovely with it. Wish we had ordered one now actually!

TwilightSkies · 19/12/2021 17:05

100% put it in the slow-cooker with cola! About 8-10 hours then put a honey mustard glaze on it and finish it off in the oven. Just falls apart and is amazing, everyone raves about it.
I don’t eat pork anymore but honestly you should try the recipe.

Floralnomad · 19/12/2021 17:05

@2irishmums2be , some of us have both , others just have gammon as they don’t eat turkey .
