Dairy-free Christmas dessert

Blablabla1984 · 15/12/2021 11:09

Help me with this one please!!
Every year I make tiramisu for dessert and it goes down really well. This year we have my DB, SIL and baby over. Baby is breastfed but has dairy allergy so SIL was told to cut dairy off while breastfeeding.
What can I make that's a crowd-pleaser and dairy-free?

Thank you!!

I've seen these Chocolate pots with salted date caramel recommended on here before?

What about a vegan dessert? I'm not vegan, but had a slice of this my vegan friend made and it was delicious! www.carnation.co.uk/recipes/vegan-vanilla-cheesecake-caramel-sauce

They also do a vegan banoffee pie recipe. Not entirely Christmassy though.

You could always do two desserts though? One dairy free, one not. There are plenty of dairy free options to purchase in the shops as well. Christmas pudding - I assume that's dairy free?

gogohm · 15/12/2021 11:21

Christmas pudding is often vegan!. Otherwise I would go down the fruit crumble route maybe, red fruits perhaps?

mibbelucieachwell · 15/12/2021 11:21

I make a vegan sticky toffee pudding. It's easy and relish. Very rich and sweet so a little goes a long way.

Plumjamorcrumblyham · 15/12/2021 11:22

DD has a milk / egg / nut allergy.

For the last few years we’ve made treacle tart. Last night DH trialed a bread and butter pudding using alpro custard. Was lovely. So we will make both.

The other option is Just Love do a vegan chocolate cake which is delicious heated for 15 seconds with vegan cream poured over it. Means you don’t need to cook for her.

I wouldn’t necessarily do all dairy free desserts. We usually do dairy free and dairy.

Plumjamorcrumblyham · 15/12/2021 11:23

And yes Christmas pudding is also a good option - alpro custard or cream is nice poured over too

Or try this and see if you like it:

Pavlova.
Beries would be obvious.
Could do chocolateif you were careful with the chocolate bought. I'd have thought caramel would be hard dairy free but the recipie above has a possibility.

My Dd made a marshmallow apple tart one year. It's a pastry bottom, apple filling the marshmallows sliced on top then baked.

ScouseQueen · 15/12/2021 11:33

M&S do lots of vegan dark chocolate based desserts that are non dairy. Pick one of those up.

Twizbe · 15/12/2021 11:35

Mince pies. You can make the pastry with a baking block rather than butter. We're dairy free and my kids love the homemade mince pies.

You can do a lemon meringue pie as well using dairy alternatives. Delilah Smith has a great recipe for it. I usually make one for Xmas.

I have made a chocolate deserts before with avocado and coconut cream. Really nice too.

Nigella (and many others) do a clementine cake which is dairy and gluten free and delicious. Could add Christmas spices and/or cocoa if you like. It is best made in advance too.

Check Christmas puddings - some are dairy free, some are made with cream for some reason.

Agree that chocolate pots made with soya cream and dairy free dark chocolate are amazing. (Check SIL hasn't been advised to cut out soya as well though, but there may be other suitable cream substitutes around if necessary)

Dairy free cream cheese substitutes do work well in recipes in my experience.

As a fall back for something that still feels a little special if you get stuck - Tesco has "free from" frozen profiteroles that are both gluten and dairy free.

Strawberries in raspberry syrup - very easy to do. Syrup is raspberries gently simmered with a splash of lemon and some sugar. Can be made in advance too.

AdaColeman · 15/12/2021 11:56

Swedish Glacé is a widely available dairy free ice cream, you could serve it with a fruit compote, or with fruits in layered jelly.

Caramel orange slices or pears baked in fruit juice, or grilled mango & pineapple slices, served with homemade meringues are some other ideas.

InTheLabyrinth · 15/12/2021 12:11

Ohh just thought of another one.
Slice some bananas in half lengthwise, and put flat in a dish.
Put a box of fresh cranberries in a pan with water and quite lot of sugar. Bring to the boil and cook till most of the cranberries are burst. Pour over the bananas, and cook in the oven for about 30 minutes.

I was in your SIL’s position a couple of years ago when I was breastfeeding DC3 who had a dairy allergy. Apple strudel was my go-to dairy-free pud which is a fav of mine anyway. Alpro do lovely dairy-free custard or the Swedish Glace vanilla ice cream is delicious.

TheSandgroper · 15/12/2021 12:14

As per family requests, I do a steamed golden syrup pudding. I use margarine and rice milk (not UK so won’t suggestion a brand). It works just fine.

I also buy meringues. I make custard with rice milk. I make the custard from scratch using cornflour because rice milk has no fat compared to cows milk. It works fine.

waltzingparrot · 15/12/2021 12:18

This looks impressive and is a dairy free dessert

TheSandgroper · 15/12/2021 12:45

Oh, and I do a lemon chiffon tart (gf, df).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/12/2021 13:35

As a pp said, Christmas pudding can be vegan if you use veggie suet.

There’s a Christmas Dried Fruit Compote (Delia’s) which is very easy, delicious, and tastes very Christmassy. You can probably find the recipe online. It’s just dried apricots, figs, prunes, raisins and orange slices quartered, simmered and orange juice added. Recipe also says tawny port but I didn’t have any the other day and it was still delish.

Crumble with dairy free butter . We are dairy free for allergies and use elm Lea plant cream and it’s lovely or oatley custard .

Or a self saucing chocolate pudding with dairy free butter . Bread and butter pudding . Most things can be substituted for dairy free milk butter and cream .
