I'm not alone in thinking this is quite an odd thing to think about getting a child am I?

This is what XP has just told me his family are getting DD for xmas. She does have a tv, but there is no ariel, so she can only watch dvds on it, so she couldn't pick up freeview anyway....

But, freeview!?! It's not even kids channels?!

oh yes it is!
CBBC is aimed at kids of 7+
my 6 yr old adores it.
and you could get film4

and loads of others.

But as you say, no good without an aerial

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 18/12/2007 17:19

I forgot about cbbc.

We have a million channels downstairs on our main tv (ok not a million, but it feels like it )

I just think if a whole family are putting in for a gift, they could have come up with something other than a freeview box!

agree with you

is it too late to get them to change it?

Lizzer · 18/12/2007 17:34

er that's v v odd... I have just let dd (8) have a tv/dvd in her room, but no ariel, you've no idea what she might watch (accidentally perhaps) especially as she gets older, i would ask if they'd thought of that? I mean c'mon, how many lovely pressies are there available for little girls??

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 18/12/2007 17:35

I said that we can't pick up freeview (a small lie, we didn't used to be able to.....)

So am hoping that they can take it back.

You think between them (gran, granda, 2 aunts, 2 uncles and a cousin) they could come up with something she would like!!

You are not alone; it seems an absolutely ridiculous gift idea to me. But then I am draconian mother and don't even allow TVs in bedrooms. Did they not ASK what might be a good idea for a gift? Hope you manage to persuade them to change it.

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 18/12/2007 19:28

Ah, it would be too simple for them to just ask what she would like/needs!

Still it is a slight improvement on a second hand crayola set with snapped crayons.......

I agree it is an odd thing to get for a young child.

SantasElasticKnickers · 18/12/2007 21:26

i agree
but then i always think buying a tv for a child is a pretty naff present

suwoo · 18/12/2007 21:36

If they are all putting in for it.. they are about £27 atm . I'd be pissed off for that alone [shallow emoticon]

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 18/12/2007 21:38

I did also think it was a bit cheap for a combined present!! [also shallow]

suwoo · 18/12/2007 21:47

lol Aimsmum

moljam · 18/12/2007 21:50

stupid idea!
im a meany mum too who wont do tv in childrens rooms!id never see them

annh · 18/12/2007 22:13

I think that's a very odd gift, yes, Freeview does have CBeebies and CBBC but it also has a load of rubbish music and selling channels which seem however to have a huge attraction for our boys. I have to keep a sharp eye on them (9 and 6) as they seem to be forever switching to QVC or bid-up TV!

Maidamess · 18/12/2007 22:19

If they do give one to her, could you set it up on your main telly downstairs? At least you can control what she is watching. And believe me, there is some utter tripe on Freeview.

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 18/12/2007 22:29

Thing is on my main downstairs telly I have NTL (or virgin as it is now) so we have loads of channels already, so we have no real need for it!

Lol at your boys switching to the shopping channels, you should keep an eye on your credit card!!!

I just wish they would have a better think about what to get her, and even buy her something to wear, or some books or games or for a block of her dance lessons....something that would be useful, since it is a combined gift from more than half her family!!!

sorry not read the whole thread but just to let you know if you get a digital ariel for £20 from Argos that goes in your loft it makes the freeview work, maybe they should include one of them in the gift!

Krimble · 18/12/2007 23:12

My PIL got freeveiw box for my kids a couple of years ago so they could watch Cbbc and the history channel.

Krimble · 18/12/2007 23:14

Sory read more and realised this is not really wanted by OP.

You can go through the channels and delete all the ones you don't want. I have deleted all the shopping channels from mine. DS set up his own channels on theirs (he is 11).

llareggub · 18/12/2007 23:14

I'd put my foot down and say no. But then I don't agree with TVs in the bedroom, particularly at that age.

AimsmumPaPumPumMeAndMyDrum · 19/12/2007 09:48

I have said that i would rather something (anything) else, so I guess i will have to wait and see what they send!!!
