20 bottles of wine for 60 people - would you say that is enough?

Because I'm not so sure, particularly at this time of year. My boss is having a little do for his staff on Thursday and we've just been discussing drinks etc and he wants me to buy 10 white wine, 10 red wine, 4 cartons of orange juice and 6 bottles of lemonade.

I know its hard to judge these things but 20 bottles of wine for 60 people doesn't seem much to me, and I think it would very embarrassing to run out.

What do you think.

not enough

bossykate · 18/12/2007 15:47

they say for weddings you should allow 1/2 bottle per person, 2/3 white, 1/3 red so that would be...

20 bottles white
10 bottles red
plus sundry soft drinks

hth.

MariNativityPlay · 18/12/2007 15:47

If this is a lunch do I think he needs a shedload more soft drinks including sparkling mineral water
For the evening, I'd guess 30 bottles of wine minimum, but I still think a lot of people will want to take it steady

SantasSmartArse · 18/12/2007 15:47

Oh lordy, this probably says a lot about my drinking habits, but I usually go on 1/2 bottle per person, and add a few extra! I guess if it's a work do it's a little different though and you might have more drivers??

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 18/12/2007 15:47

not enough lol

bossykate · 18/12/2007 15:48

think you should have more juice and less fizzy... plus some mineral water...

Tommy · 18/12/2007 15:48

depends on who the people are and what time of day the party is!

It doesn't sound enough to me but then I drink alot

I would say you'd need half a bottle per person unless you know that some of them are definitely not drinking.

You can always take it home with you as a perk if it doesn't get drunk

frothykindofadrink · 18/12/2007 15:48

does 'little do' mean one drink and you're out?

if so fine

20 bottles = 120 glasses, so two each

have to be small glasses though no pouring their own

SpawnChorus · 18/12/2007 15:48

Lunchtime or evening? Fine for lunch, I'd say. Probably not enough for a post-work party. Better to get a bit too much than not enough. I'd probably get 30 bottles in.

CremolaFirCone · 18/12/2007 15:48

definitely not enough if you are giving it away. only 5 glasses in a bottle.
need 36 bottles for 3 glasses each

Most places will do sale or return, so there's no harm in having too much (not that we actually end up returning it, you understand...).

Depends on what time of day the party is, and how many people are likely to be driving afterwards.

I think for 60 people that's quite tight, unless at least half of them will be driving, or the party is very brief. Maybe he wants to run out of booze to get rid of them?

bossykate · 18/12/2007 15:49

you could also get sale or return from oddbins so if you didn't use all the remainder could go back...

TheHollyandMcDreamy · 18/12/2007 15:50

I have a Xmas guide in one of my mags somewhere - hang on and I'll tell you what it recommends!

sandyballs · 18/12/2007 15:51

On the email that went round he suggests meeting for drinks between 2 and 4pm. We work in London so everyone gets the train, no drivers.

I was thinking of my boozy friends - I'm sure we've drunk 20 bottles between 10 of us before now . But obviously this isn't that type of do, but being xmas I'm sure most people will have at least a couple of glasses.

It says a big bash for 50

12 red
24 white
3 cases lager
30 bottles bitter
4 bottles spirits
15 litres mixers
4 bags of ice

good luck

hoarsewhisperer · 18/12/2007 15:53

I'd say not enough too. Or you could make a punch to supplement it, have some beer etc...

Why not get him to buy some wine in a box - works out cheaper. I remember from last yewar at my parents that tesco did a brilliant red that was a tenner and had the equivalent of about 4 or 5 botttles in it.

Cava is quite cheap too and goes down well....

how long is it supposed to go on for?

sandyballs · 18/12/2007 15:53

I told him Oddbins round the corner does sale or return, so much better to get too much than too little. I can just see us running dry at 3pm and me having to dash out to restock. If I go on too much about it though it makes me feel like a raving lush .

He is rather mean, bless him. He was horrified when I suggested making it earlier, say 1pm, and having sandwiches and nibbles.

oops sorry - crossed posts...even for 2 hours i think you need a bit more

Pinkchampagne · 18/12/2007 15:54

Definitely not enough IMO

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 18/12/2007 15:56

if its because hes that mean then better not to bother and give u all the afternoon off to go and get pissed or go hme

TheHollyandMcDreamy · 18/12/2007 15:58

COuld you not suggest you all go down the pub or to a wine bar and he puts some money behind the bar? Gets the first round in for everyone?

sandyballs · 18/12/2007 16:03

That does sound a much better idea and it was suggested last week, but no, he'd rather we all met in a lower ground conference room for half a glass of wine each .
