Good Christmas films

Can anyone recommend some good Christmas films for me and 16yo dd to watch, please. We both like to binge watch them all through December but can't seem to find enough good ones...just a load of identical Netflix ones that all look the same. Confused

Our tastes are pretty varied. Definitely not averse to the usual Christmas cheese, and I have a particular weakness for depictions of Christmas in New York. Happy to watch other stuff too. Don't mind old classic or modern take.

We love miracle on 34th Street and it's a wonderful life, but tend to save those until Christmas itself. DD likes home alone, I can't really watch it now as it irritates me. We quite like Elf. Love nativity, especially the first one. Recently watched Last Christmas and Love Actually again, which we enjoyed. Not sure if Die Hard counts as a Christmas film but we enjoyed that recently too! Grin

What else can we watch, please?

Arthur Christmas is amazing, please give it a go, totally under rated and an absolute favourite here!

Prettypennies · 11/12/2021 18:40

Although it’s an animation, Klaus is really good!

Joystir59 · 11/12/2021 18:46

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

Joystir59 · 11/12/2021 18:46

Love Actually

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 11/12/2021 18:47

So far I've watched;
Love Actually
Christmas with the Coopers
Scrooged
Click & collect
Nativity
Christmas in the wild
Christmas No.1
Christmas Vacation - love it!
Get Santa
Christmas with the Kranks - love it too!

Still to watch;
Arthur Christmas
Santa Claus the movie
Its a wonderful life
Polar Express
Surviving Christmas
And some Hallmark stuff - cos its cheesy and Christmassy and I love it!

Also, if you can catch it on one of the Christmas movie channels - The Spirit of Christmas is fab!

The family stone - only on Disney+ this year which sucks but worth the price of admission to watch Dermott Mulroney

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 11/12/2021 18:56

Also, if you can find them all the BBC old versions of;
Box of Delights
Children of Green Knowe
Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

And I just watched Father Christmas is back.

Isolation turning out to be surprisingly fun!

I’m a huge Christmas film fan but I’d never watched “It’s a wonderful life” until last Christmas.
I’d never fancied it from the look of it. I decided to give it a go last Christmas Eve, much to the protest of my husband and brother.
Well, we all absolutely loved it.
It lives up to the hype.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 11/12/2021 19:20

Last Christmas on Netflix is amazing. Heart wrenching but a real spirit of Christmas film.

Holidate is good too - not fully Christmassy but very good.

Cheesy hallmark films - I would recommend Christmas Land and the Christmas Prince films.

I have Covid and have spent all week watching films - I've lost track of everything I've watched. 😂

SilentBob · 11/12/2021 19:28

I love a Christmas film. I'll happily watch them all- bad, good, ugly, cheesy, classic etc etc.

I do have one bit of advice when it comes to a Netflix/Disney/hallmark channel Christmas film though- if it's got an Inn, you're in. It's gonna be a good un.

FrownedUpon · 11/12/2021 19:51

For New York based films: Mrs Miracle 2 & All I Want for Christmas.

I also like Fred Claus & Bad Santa.

TheWeeDonkey · 11/12/2021 21:17

Oh The Bishop's Wife is great.

I'm just watching this thing on Netflix called Elves which is promisingly spooky.

SmithfamilyRobinson · 11/12/2021 21:26

A Christmas Story - American film with a cult following in the US. Bit like the TV series The Wonder Years. Suitable to watch with an older child. Personal favourites are Polar Express & caught The Bishops Wife on BBC iplayer last year which I enjoyed.

mnp321 · 11/12/2021 21:43

I watched Last Christmas tonight. Very good (the GM music a bonus) but it made my husband cry. I don't think I could watch it again although we all really enjoyed it.

MadameKali · 11/12/2021 21:49

Last Christmas.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/12/2021 22:45

DH loves Christmas With the Kranks (obvious attraction for him is Jamie Leigh Curtis rather than the script Xmas Grin )

And he likes Bad Santa , that film makes me dry heave !

gattey · 11/12/2021 23:01

I'm watching office christmas party now. I want to go to a party like that!!!

AlexaShutUp · 12/12/2021 00:53

Thanks so much for all of these suggestions! We have seen some of them already this year, but will definitely add some of the others to the list!

wheelz46 Bruce might not agree Die Hard is a Christmas movie but the director John McTiernan, fully believes it to be one. I'm with him on that!

zeromango · 12/12/2021 09:22

The Santa Clause with Tim Allen - one of my all time faves!
Muppets Christmas Carol - Micheal Caine is fabulous and the songs are great
The Holiday
Love Actually
Elf
Jingle All The Way (daft Arnie film so bad it's good!)

boobot1 · 12/12/2021 09:24

@Mindgone

I loved The Bishop’s Wife. Also enjoyed Love Hard, new on Netflix
Yeah the bishops wife is better than its a wonderful life imo.
AlexaShutUp · 12/12/2021 11:07

The Bishop's Wife is a completely new one on me, I must admit. I have googled it and it looks lovely. Does anyone know where I can watch it? Is it on Netflix or Prime?

AllTheOtherCats · 12/12/2021 11:27

I think The Bishop's Wife is currently on BBC iPlayer

mnp321 · 12/12/2021 17:58

@CelebrateYourOwnWay

Earlier this week I watched Click and Collect. It's on Netflix and stars Stephen Merchant. It only lasts for just over 1 hour but I quite enjoyed it.

Also, National Lampoons Christmas Vaction.

Great recommendation thanks, watched it this morning. Everyone needs a Dev for their neighbour.
