Good Christmas films

Can anyone recommend some good Christmas films for me and 16yo dd to watch, please. We both like to binge watch them all through December but can't seem to find enough good ones...just a load of identical Netflix ones that all look the same. Confused

Our tastes are pretty varied. Definitely not averse to the usual Christmas cheese, and I have a particular weakness for depictions of Christmas in New York. Happy to watch other stuff too. Don't mind old classic or modern take.

We love miracle on 34th Street and it's a wonderful life, but tend to save those until Christmas itself. DD likes home alone, I can't really watch it now as it irritates me. We quite like Elf. Love nativity, especially the first one. Recently watched Last Christmas and Love Actually again, which we enjoyed. Not sure if Die Hard counts as a Christmas film but we enjoyed that recently too! Grin

What else can we watch, please?

Meant to add, I'm not very keen on animations, but could potentially be persuaded for something really good!

I watched Love Actually again last night

The Holiday

I'm planning on watching the Downton Abbey series again soon (nice Christmas episodes)

ncsmummy · 11/12/2021 15:32

My DD and I enjoyed the holiday a lot, also the first Christmas Chronicles (not seen the second) the Santa Claus movies are always fun too

Clarkey86 · 11/12/2021 15:34

Muppets Christmas Carol

Klaus

BetsyBumble · 11/12/2021 15:34

One Magic Christmas is a good one that maybe isn't so well known - Mary Steenburgen is in it. I think it's Disney.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 11/12/2021 15:35

Santa Claus the Movie (the Dudley Moore one)

PositiveLife · 11/12/2021 15:36

Die hard is definitely a Xmas film!

We love Elf (well Dd2 is a bit fed up of it).
I liked The Holiday far more than I expected to.
Dd1 (14) loves Bad Moms Christmas

exexpat · 11/12/2021 15:45

I always liked Scrooged (Bill Murray).

Christmas with the Coopers

It's a TV series - two series, actually - rather than a film but "Home for Christmas", a Norwegian thing on Netflix, is fun in a sort of Love, Actually romcom style. I watched it last year, and DD (19) is enjoying it this year. It may depend on how you feel about watching sex scenes with your teenager?

I know you said you're not keen on animation but Arthur Christmas is wonderful.

ODFOgrinch · 11/12/2021 15:47

Gremlins
If you like cheese and an American skyline there's a film called 'Christmas Eve' on Amazon prime that you may enjoy. I can't guarantee it is New York but it might be.

exexpat · 11/12/2021 15:48

Oh, and if you like New York Christmas films then you might like these two that aren't entirely Christmassy but are set in New York and have Christmas elements: Serendipity and You've Got Mail.

musicalfrog · 11/12/2021 15:48

Gremlins for an all time classic.

Father Christmas is Back for a super up to date Netflix film. Star studded, British and rather enjoyable.

We loved this!

Die Hard is the ultimate Christmas film. Xmas Grin

IAmSantaOhYesIAm · 11/12/2021 16:13

I second home for Christmas - I loved it

hygtt · 11/12/2021 16:17

i've not seen Noelle yet so that's on my list.
Die hard counts!
Deck the halls

ISeeTheLight · 11/12/2021 16:18

Godmothered on disney+ is cute.

Lou98 · 11/12/2021 16:29

Both the Christmas Chronicles moves are good on Netflix.

My DP and I watched Office Christmas Party last night which we thought was quite good!

TheWeeDonkey · 11/12/2021 16:29

Die Hard
Trading Places
Arthur Christmas
Its a Wonderful Life
Muppet Christmas Carol
Miracle on 34th Street (either version. Its one film where I liked the remake as much as the original)
Krampus
Elf

All in on particular order.

hygtt · 11/12/2021 16:33

Bad Santa

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/12/2021 16:36

I love Muppet Christmas Carol.

Klaus is quite nice.

I want to watch Charlie Brown's Christmas but I can't watch it without paying.

Off to see if I can find Die Hard.

The Holiday was on this week but I'm not a Jack Black fan.

Downton57 · 11/12/2021 16:39

The Bishop's Wife is my second favourite Christmas film after It's A Wonderful Life. While You Were Sleeping, Meet Me in St Louis and Little Women have wonderful Christmassy moments too.

garlictwist · 11/12/2021 16:45

I tried to watch Bad Moms Christmas on my friends recommendation and I thought it was so bad!

However I really like The Holiday

londonmummy1966 · 11/12/2021 16:50

Trading places is my favourite - also any version of A Christmas Carol.

Mindgone · 11/12/2021 16:58

I loved The Bishop’s Wife.
Also enjoyed Love Hard, new on Netflix

Berrymas · 11/12/2021 16:59

The Holly and the Ivy - a beautiful classic film, really lovely.
