DH has expressed a desire for some port this yaer. Neither of is have ever had it, so need some help in choosing a nice one.

I also want a nice sherry to try to soften up the in-laws.

Bumping for you and also cos I'd like to know. Dont' understand sherry or port despite being very experienced in many other varieties of alcoholic drinks

ChristmasPresence · 18/12/2007 14:15

That should be don't obviously - I do know a thing or two about apostrophes!

dingdongmerrilyonFLIER · 18/12/2007 14:16

thanks CP, was just about to do a sad face bump! There must be loads of mumsnetters who know about port and sherry - where are you all?

i am fairly partial to manzanilla sherry but chill chill chill none of that 'lukewarm oh dear granny has wet herself again' shite

croft original for a dry sherry adn harveys bristol cream for a cream sherry.

Am no expert that is what my parents have but they are quite choosy.

kerryk · 18/12/2007 14:30

i get the m&s one in for christmas, you dont drink it till after your meal anyway by which point i am usually half pissed because of all the wine i have been drinking so i am not really sure about what it tastes like

dingdongmerrilyonFLIER · 18/12/2007 14:59

kerryk
do you mean the M&S port?

harveys bristol cream and croft original were the 2 that I was trying to remember, they both used to be advertised quite alot when I was growing up. I just don't know, though, if they are "nice" or if I should get something else.

I'll second taylors port. I think they do a vintage one which is a bit older...very very nice with cheese and crackers.....yum yum

dingdongmerrilyonFLIER · 18/12/2007 15:43

yes m&s port, think it is £6 a bottle, if you buy 6 though you get 10% of.

flipflopper · 18/12/2007 17:02

We have got some cockburns port and its very nice, haven't really tried any others though and dont know a lot about port.
My grandma will only drink harveys bristol cream sherry, its a sweet sherry- drinkable if there is nothing else in the house and you are desperate.
