If you had a 12 year old boy just getting into anime, what would you get them for Christmas?

He loves gaming, movies, Marvel and now anime. I don’t love any of those things so am stuck for gifts! He has a gaming pc, good keyboard and mouse, and says he doesn’t need anything so just get him some led lights and that’ll be enough. I wish he’d just suggest something a bit more! Any ideas please?

Box set of Studio Ghibli films

Things I would have loved as a 12 year old with the same taste as your son:

A subscription for Funimation or Crunchyroll (streaming services like Netflix but dedicated to anime.)

Find out what game he’s into at the moment and get him a gift card for in game currency for it.

Tickets for your local MCM convention.

T-shirts from Redbubble, Qwertee or gift vouchers for the same.

A TokyoTreat or Bokksu box of Japanese sweets.

Manga comics. DS1 (13) has been reading Shaman King this last year.

I have got him a My Hero Academia wallet.

Hoodie with Marvel logos on (H&M generally good for this, also Primark) or Naruto/My Hero Academia themed.

Funko pop figures. I had to ask DH if a character was good or not...

Anime LED lamp. We got a Naruto one. It was direct from China but actually looks really good.

Phone case with one of the above themes or pop socket type thing with that.

Bluetooth headphones / wired gaming headset with mic and lights.

Snuggie blanket thing/onesie for snuggling up and gaming

Imported Japanese snacks or "real" ramen from your local Asian store. Beware the spicy ones really are extra spicy.

Popcorn maker or waffle maker.

Ohh yes to Crunchyroll.

Is he into the artwork, if so there are a number of really good books showcasing this. Just a few of them listed at:

Crunchy roll is a good idea. Manga - a little bit of Naruto to get him going? That's a younger one, but still cool (I think Wink!)

The subscription boxes for Japanese sweets or Ramen if he prefers savory stuff would be good.

The kids in year 7 and 8 at my school are massively into My hero Academia, Naruto and Demon Slayer(this one I think is a bit mature and I wouldn't encourage it as it's a 15 but it depends on him) They all secretly love Dragon Ball Z but wouldn't be caught dead saying it out loud. They really like the learn to draw manga books, or anime colouring books, amazon has some with a good mix of shows.

Shock Don't understand why this was deleted, only links to gifts pertaining to the above suggestions? Baffled I am

Prettypennies · 08/12/2021 15:42

Studio Ghibli films, unless you have Netflix as there is a lot of them on there!

Woodswoman · 08/12/2021 17:35

This is all absolutely brilliant, I went to work and just checked this now, so many great suggestions, thank you all!

DS also likes the scrolls you can get on amazon but wouldn't recommend as when they arrive they are really poor quality.

My dd is 13 and is also into anime.

I bought her a my hero academia cosplay costume, poster, funko pop figures and duvet cover for her birthday. She was over the moon.

She enjoys studio ghibli (I love it!!) But her favourites are anime with darker themes! Her favourite is tokyo ghoul (its a 15, but she watches horror films too so knew she would be ok)

Have you got a forbidden planet or small comic/geek merchandise shop near you? I've always found them very helpful if you give a rough idea of interests/programmes he likes.

Qwertee sometimes have anime prints and tshirts but aren't labelled by film so you have to kind of know what the characters look like!

Emp is great for marvel / anime merchandise.
