Christmas memories

Every year on the build up to Christmas I always get the same 2 memories pop into my head, I never understand why as I had a great childhood, great christmases so I never know why why these particular ones always pop up...

  1. Up until I was around 8 ( thats when my relatives started working in the pub near my house) we used to have the same routine on the run up to Christmas. When school finished we went to my Nan and grandads house for the week not staying the night jus5 during the day as they lived fairly close ) as both parents worked, I’d help my Nan do the Christmas shop as she would be catering for us all, on Christmas Eve we would get kfc or maccies on the way home, then go for an evening walk to the local town centre with the dog where we would look a5 all the lights and then when I’d get home I’d watch the nightmare before Christmas as that was always on Christmas Eve the same time every year, I still watch it every year now.
  1. I used to be in the scouts so from aged 12 onwards we would go to tesco the few before Christmas and help pack bags, I’d come home Christmas Eve, got to the pub and then we’d get home at around 12/1 and get up early so we could go to my Nans to help her out. My nans best friend who lived down the end of the road would come and we’d do the same thing every year, eat, prezzies, queens speech, nap and then play cards til late and then go home which 8 always tho7ght was pointless as we’d always be coming back Boxing Day for our Buffett and watch football.
Some of this we still do. I’m not sure why these particular ones stay in my head but they do..

What memories stick out for you at Christmas?

There was a biggish gap between me and my 3 siblings so they were all out to the pub when I was quite small and I have good memories of them all getting ready with their mates to go out on the town on Christmas Eve.

Every Christmas morning after presents, our neighbours always came round to visit us with their kids and we'd all have a drink together....well the adults would!

My favourite memories are weirdly all related to school and chapel!

I remember the joy of the massive Christmas tree in the hall at school...always real and full of glass ornaments. It was a really old building and had a lot of atmosphere.

I remember making Christmas decorations in class and how happy that made me...I never got enough art supplies at home!

I remember the school Christmas fairs and the chapel services...and how nice it was to walk to school or chapel on a frosty day....I remember the lovely window displays in the village shops and doing my own little bit of Christmas shopping in the Chemist. I'd get these little heart shaped bottles of violet perfume which I thought were the best thing ever!
