How to decorate the tree

drivinmecrazy · 06/12/2021 21:10

Each year we buy a huge Christmas tree and never seem to have enough decorations to do it justice. This year I've blown caution to the wind and splashed out on some more individual pieces.
Yet the tree is still looking underwhelming.
Do I undress it entirely or can I salvage it.
What are your top tips for decorating the tree???

We hang something on every single twig , if it’s a big tree that has spaced apart branches make sure the baubles are big so that the space is filled.

Lots and lots of lights!

LawnFever · 06/12/2021 21:20

I have a mixture of bigger individual decorations, then mid sized baubles and mini baubles, if you do them in order spaced out it all fills up Smile

Maybe you need more smaller ones too?

Noeuf · 06/12/2021 21:21

Zig zag your lights top to bottom not round and round. Saw it on YouTube it TikTok or something and it’s brilliant.

The key it's lots of repeated shapes. I have lots and lots of baubles and then more special decorations in groups of 3s.

Post a photo? It will help with suggestions.

I saw a Kelly Hoppen on tv giving some different ideas and one was to get some pussy willow branches and you can add them into the tree to make it look fuller.
I was in the supermarket this week and saw a bundle of Pussy willow branches and thought I would give it a try.

Reader, I can confirm it looks shit.

Stompythedinosaur · 06/12/2021 21:39

Bulk up with absolutely loads of cheaper baubles, put the deeper in to the tree, have the special ones placed more visibly.

Or reduce the baubles so you have very few of a single colour/material (e.g. just white or just plain wood) and a few white lights for a minimalist look.

What do you want the tree to say? Perfection ? Quirky/personality? Nature/ bit pagan ? Drama?

I think when you work out what you like it’s much easier.

Ooh, I’ve been looking for pussy willow to go in my Japanese bamboo brush pot. Which supermarket, pretty please? 😁

I have lights then strings of beads then tinsel and then lots of baubles

INeedSixEggs · 06/12/2021 21:59

Sainsbury's! £5 a bundle and they are gorgeous.

You could probably make them look lovely in the tree but it didn't look good when I tried so mine are displayed in a vase and look so much better.

GerardWay123 · 06/12/2021 22:06

Loads of lights, cheap baubles and wrapped up empty boxes with bows under the tree.

Perfect! Thank you!

Tesco too, £3.50 I think!

AliceMcK · 06/12/2021 22:19

I’ve filled mine out with feather garlands and flowers this year. Also used cheap (not sure what they are called) but I suppose fillers or spreys of frosted branches. I’ve actually used less decorations but it looks so much better than other years,

Smashing!

We’ve not been able to make the usual space available for our real tree this year, so it will have to be the big artificial one in front of the radiator. It’s a bit gappy, so I was planning to make a long garland of miniature bunting to wind round and fill in the gaps. I’ve got a few charm packs of Christmas fabric which will be ideal.
