What's your favourite tree ornament and why!

I've spent the day decorating the tree and house. Such a joy.

Whenever I open up the boxes, it's a voyage of discovery and delight, remembering previous Christmases and the little stories around each item.

My favourite? Hard to pick, but probably this chap. Bought at the National Theatre in their lovely shop, one winter on a rare all-family trip to town with the then teens. We all loved him and picked him out together. The kids are big now and we don't go out together so this bring back happy memories.

What's your favourite ? (Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive, just meaningful))'.

I love Christmas Grin

I’ve got lots of cool baubles that I love, including one for every year DH & I have had a Christmas tree together, but my favourite is this sprout one that I bought this year. My lovely aunt who was like a second mother to me died a few years ago, and I’ve been wanting to get an ornament as a reminder of her for the tree, so she’s always part of our Christmas. I scoured the shops over the years thinking of maybe an angel bauble or something like that, but nothing seemed right. Until I saw the sprout this year.

Everyone else in the family hate sprouts, but she’d always insist upon them for Christmas as she liked them and it was part of Christmas dinner for her so we’d cook sprouts for her. So, in honour of my beautiful angel aunt, I have the sprout just for her and will do every Christmas just like when she was alive.

I’ve collected a bauble with the year on ever since my (now 18 year old) daughter was born. When she has her own home I’ll give her the whole set for her first Christmas tree. They make me smile each year when we get them out

We have a hippo in a blonde wig and tutu. It makes me very happy 😁

Sn0tnose · 05/12/2021 20:35

Mine is a battered old robin that has got to be at least 50 years old. My Nan had it for years before giving it to my mum and it was always on our tree growing up, and now I’ve got it.

We buy a couple of new ones every year, so my other current favourite is a Tom Martin ‘The Snowman’ bauble that DH bought me

8 years ago I was facing the 1st Xmas without my beloved dad. It was an awful time as we nearly lost mum too.

I was on the incredibly supportive thread for those who have lost a parent here on mn.

A mner called @supermariosister made me a small felt Robin tree decoration and he's been on my tree every year since.

I often think of @mummylin and the others from thar thread and even though I've had many nn changes since I'm still grateful for the support and kindness shown to me by strangers at the worst time of my life.

A pair of pink flamingo’s with dangly legs.

It was a joke between my American late MIL and me. She sent us an ornament each year and always threatened to send me flamingo’s as I thought they were the epitome of US tut. And then one year she did and wet herself laughing when I called her 😂

I told her they would be on the tree each year from then on. At the back of the tree that’s in the corner!

She passed away suddenly 6 years ago. Each year when I place the pink flamingo ornament at the back of the tree, I shed a tear for her and tell her how much she is still missed and loved ❤️

Isn’t it lovely that the most precious ones of all are the ones with meaning or memories behind them?

Whatwillbewilbe · 05/12/2021 21:00

I have a few meaningful ones - connected to loved loved ones who have died. I also have a lovely, simple, olive wood star that I bought in Bethlehem when I went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land a few years ago.

TheLadyGrayson · 05/12/2021 21:10

I can’t choose between these two! Bought them both in Budapest a few years ago, should have been going back this weekend but cancelled because of the new testing rules. ☹️

I’m not sure if you can tell from the pictures but the tiny baby is inside a walnut shell and the angel’s dress is an upside down dried flower. I’ve got all sorts of tat on my tree, and some much more expensive decorations but these two are my favourites. 😁

We've done the same. We tend to get them on a day trip or holiday somewhere. One has sadly broken, but the others have such fabulous memories.
Sleepyteach · 05/12/2021 21:23

I love all of ours, they all have some special meaning, I didn’t even bother with any of our “filler” ones this year as we have so many special ones, mostly from places we’ve visited.

My favourite is a small felt robin made by a girl I taught years ago, she was, without a doubt the brightest student I ever had the good fortune to teach. I left not long after that and I always hang that decoration on my tree and hope she’s on her way to becoming an astrophysicist (her ambition).

I love those decorations @TheLadyGrayson

I could talk you through every decoration on my tree - yet to go up - but I bought this Christmas pudding dec at the fairly famous Bettys in Harrogate in 1981, so 40 years ago.
It was for the small Christmas tree I had got for my boyfriend, now DH, who thought I was bit mad tbh. Couldn't see the point of it Xmas Shock

It still looks OK and has survived several house moves, children etc. We got engaged that Christmas and it reminds me of then and how lucky I am to still share my life with DH. And he now loves Christmas trees!

My favourite tree ornament is a ceramic pair of turtle doves (as in the Christmas song). It was a gift to my late DH and I for our first Christmas in our new home. That was 1994. DH died in 2008. Ever since I have made sure it is me who place it on the tree and I tell him I still love him and will never forget him.

GlitterSquid · 05/12/2021 23:05

This year probably this little bee hive 🥰

Ooh these are so lovely and make my heart sing, Thankyou for sharing. It's very heartwarming to know that around the country people are treasuring little works of art (or plastic flamingos Grin) that embody the spirit of Christmas.

I seem to have something in my eye, daft old bugger.

Keep 'em coming people. SmileXmas GrinXmas Smile

I too bought a special bauble for each year DS was a child. My favourites are an angel I was given as a child, the first bauble when DS was 2 weeks old and one of my Great Grandmothers art deco baubles. Each one though tells a story!

Allthatglittersandgold · 06/12/2021 18:41

Pic 1 - a tiny Christmas tree made out of buttons. A gift from a dear friend. It brings me so much joy.

Pic 2 - from the Inveraray Christmas shop. Stopped in the town on the way back from my favourite camping trip ever on a Scottish west coast island.

Pic 3 - from Lapland when I went to see the actual real Father Christmas.

I have a surfing Santa we got in Hawaii on our honeymoon that makes me smile every year.

Liverbird77 · 06/12/2021 19:36

A dear friend sent me some Monkees ornaments last year. It absolutely made my day! I can't put a pic up because we've not got our tree up yet but they are ace!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/12/2021 20:13

I've just bought Jane - my new favourite.
My favourite old one is a little carousel - it was part of a set of 6 but all the others have broken over the years.
