Best cocktail book and key ingredients help

I want to get my bestie a brilliant cocktail book / bible plus key ingredients so they can start. Any ideas tips ?

Yes I was going to suggest Olly Smiths new book even though I haven't looked inside.

I just presume it'll be colourful, fun and jolly like him. I think I might have a secret crush

Diffords Cocktail Guide is one of the classics.

Agree with bitters and marachino cherries.

Also how about some decent grenadine or orgeat syrups? Simple syrup is easy to make but if just starting out a bottle of this would be handy.
