What she doesn't like:
She's doesn't appreciate smellys/ candles.
She drinks way too much so don't want anything alcoholic.
Clothes
Anything sweet like chocolate

Any ideas Hmm

@twilightcafe

Cashmere wrist warmer/fingerless gloves from Turtle Doves?
Think they have special offers on at present too
frumpety · 02/12/2021 21:23

I would get them vouchers from either M&S or John Lewis and let them choose themselves something lovely.

KimikosNightmare · 02/12/2021 22:02

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

If somebody presented me with a portable humidifier, I actually don't think I'd be able to stop myself from asking them if they'd gone stark staring bonkers.
Same here. Although that would be my second question. My first would be "what is it"?
StillWeRise · 02/12/2021 22:21

@HolidayTime2021

I am 55 . If you dont know me well enough to get me a gift that I would love then please dont get me anything.

I can afford to buy anything I want myself. I dont want more tat in my life.

Most 50 year olds have all the gloves, pestles, hats, scarfs etc that they need.

If I got cashmere wrist warmers I would be contacting dignitas and putting a living will in place (that is one of my pre-determined thresholds - I have considered it at length)

I hear you!!! I tried to downplay the SS at work this year...it is only £10 but even that is too much to spend on tat that no one wants, I have to buy for someone I get on OK with but really know very little of outside of work, it WILL end up being random toiletries and tbh I resent it. Also resent being the recipient of random toiletries.

John Lewis voucher or book token

I’m this age and would hate most of the ideas suggested here. They’d be regifted.

ThesecondLEM · 02/12/2021 22:37

I'm 51 I'd like a nice mug, some comfy socks and some hand cream.

A lovely scarf?

ElephantOfRisk · 02/12/2021 23:35

I'm a woman in my 50s and hard to buy for.

around that value, I would like maybe a voucher for a florist to get a nice bouquet (or just a nice bouquet)

HolidayTime2021 · 03/12/2021 00:24

How can you get to 50 and not have enough mugs in your life?

I'm in my 60's but there's always room for another Emma Bridgewater mug.

There has however never been room for novelty/ joke/ sweary/slogan mugs. The one in the link above would go straight into the bin.

AnFiadhRua · 03/12/2021 06:38

They break!

BarbaraofSeville · 03/12/2021 06:46

But I find they accumulate far faster than they break. I know we have too many mugs when the mug shelf in the kitchen cupboard is full, which has to be at least 20 mugs, which is far too many when there's only two of us, DP works away quite a lot so often it's just me.

The only reason I can justify keeping so many is that we have an annual family bonfire party, so need a lot for then, but the mug collection still needs pruning, and someone buying me yet another mug just accelerates the need to do another boring household chore.

I'm also one of those people who will repeatedly use the same mug so it's not like I need a fresh one each time I get a drink.

Plus it's one of those things where, unless the mug is a size and shape I like, I'm probably never going to use it, so I don't really want other people choosing my mugs. If someone bought me an Emma Bridgewater mug, I'd firstly be astonished that someone is willing to pay TWENTY POUNDS for such a horrible mug and then would probably sell it, because I'd never use it.

Nomorefuckstogive · 03/12/2021 07:26

I’m 50s. I would like satin pyjamas or M&S or John Lewis gift card. I would also like a Diptyque Insolite candle from Liberty, but £30 won’t stretch to that. Additionally, a light up gin snow globe - also from Marks.

Nomorefuckstogive · 03/12/2021 07:27

I would hate anything novelty or a mug, BTW.

GnomeDePlume · 03/12/2021 08:07

I'm in my fifties and hanker after something like this:

leather journal

AnFiadhRua · 03/12/2021 08:09

I definitely couldnt use an off you fuck mug at work! I couldnt give one either.

My ss recipient is in her 30s. I reckon. I will pop over to that thread. Is it any different?

steppemum · 03/12/2021 09:00

I just think that for SS, either get consumables, be more original than just choccies. This is fine is cost is about £10

Or, for £30 (which I would really resent spending on SS as so often the gift isn't right) get a small box of nice choccies, and attach to it a voucher.
If you must buy something, clearly attach a gift receipt so they can swap it.

I hate receiving things that I don't want or need. I get some every year from one friend and from my students. I love the thought, I hate the fact that money has been spent needlessly on things that will add to land fill.

dottiedodah · 03/12/2021 09:09

Its so subjective though ,isnt it .I am in my 50s and would like anything with a London theme ,some good chocolates(Green and Blacks,or similar). Maybe a Theatre token for a local venue ? We live near the sea and I would like any pictures /jewellery .Maybe something similar for your area?

ElephantOfRisk · 03/12/2021 09:23

I think it's difficult, by this age you pretty much know what you like and unless you are short on funds, you'd just buy what you want.

So, you are left with either magically coming up with something they'd love but never though of, consumables, a voucher or simply something they'd not generally buy themselves which for me is flowers.

KimikosNightmare · 03/12/2021 13:54

Additionally, a light up gin snow globe - also from Marks

That would go straight in the bin too.

catscatscurrantscurrants · 03/12/2021 14:16

I'm in my 50s. I'd love theatre vouchers, cinema vouchers, a magazine subscription for a hobby interest, butter shortbread, an experience voucher for a falconry centre, a calendar or diary by my favourite artist.

notacooldad · 03/12/2021 14:22

The best I can come up with is to have a look on etsy and see what suits the lady and her interests although after reading this part She drinks way too much so don't want anything alcoholic it sounds like a decent bottle of gin would be appreciated!

dizzydizzydizzy · 03/12/2021 14:47

What are her hobbies? I'm in my 50s and Would love some of the suggestions here and be totally bored by others.

I would like something to do with one of hobbies.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/12/2021 17:06

I'd be quite freaked out if I received pyjamas.

notacooldad · 03/12/2021 17:19

I got pj's a couple of years ago as part of my secret Santa.I was really pleased with them. In fact I wore them last night!
