I'm at a loss what to get.

What she doesn't like:
She's doesn't appreciate smellys/ candles.
She drinks way too much so don't want anything alcoholic.
Clothes
Anything sweet like chocolate

Any ideas Hmm

I'm over 50 and would like

a plain glass vase
£30 of fresh flowers
a costa voucher
chilli's travel mug (current one wearing out)
£30 of vouchers for a decent facial.

no chocs, alcohol or paper products, I'm very picky

CloudyStorms · 01/12/2021 17:55

Sounds odd but a cheese board?
Some of those turtle dove fingerless gloves?

PermanentTemporary · 01/12/2021 17:59

This is the best gift thread of 2021 and there have been some hilarious ones already Grin thank you OP.

A Dignitas gift voucher seems to be the consensus. In a cashmere envelope.

KimikosNightmare · 01/12/2021 19:09

I'm over 50 and at that budget I would like

Fingerless (or even with fingers) gloves from an ethical, UK source
Scarf- sourced as above
£30 of Flowers
Selection of preferably unpasteurised cheeses
Yotam Ottolenghi hard back cook book

Absolutely not perfume , jewellery or stationery or a voucher for spa or facials.

By the time you reach 50 if you don't already have a pestle (I do) it's very unlikely you'll ever want or need one.

MrsBertBibby · 01/12/2021 19:19

I am 50 + and I would like this

jodowns.com/collections/dishes/products/shoreline-medium-deep-dish

Ideally I would like a big one but budget doesn't stretch

NessieMcNessface · 01/12/2021 19:36

Seasalt usually have really nice boxes of good quality bamboo socks for £28 (currently on offer 20% off usually £35).

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 01/12/2021 19:45

Do you have any idea whether this person is comfortably well off (and used to silk pillowcases, cashmere socks, chilli flasks) or perhaps paid on minimum wage - in which case, if she's anything like me, she'd resent £30 being spent on an expensive version of something she can buy much cheaper. I'd be sat there looking at the cashmere socks going "Somebody spent £30 on these, that's my food budget for the week, for goodness sake why didn't they just get me a voucher".

junebirthdaygirl · 01/12/2021 19:54

In that age bracket and my favourite would be flowers. At least l wold enjoy them while they lasted instead of sticking it in a cupboard and forgetting about it.
Or a hamper in a nice basket with some homemade..from a market etc..Nice Christmas treats.

SleepWoof · 01/12/2021 21:29

If she loves chocolate how about a brownie delivery? I was given a box from Bad Brownies and they were amazing (and it's not something I would think to buy for myself)

caringcarer · 01/12/2021 21:48

I second a silk pillowcase, so cool in summer.

caringcarer · 01/12/2021 21:53

Whatever you get include receipt so she can change it if she hates it. M&S will change anything with a receipt.

SleepWoof · 01/12/2021 21:53

Ah sorry, misread your OP, ignore my unhelpful suggestion

Lightbulbs · 01/12/2021 23:26

Wow, so many suggestions, thank you.

One persons says definitely X, whilst the next say definitely NOT x. So subjective and personal.

Thanks for all the ideas!

Gift hair care box
DIY/art kits (like paint-by-numbers or mosaic puzzles)
Custom desk calendar
Portable humidifier
Coffee voucher

AnFiadhRua · 02/12/2021 07:47

@caringcarer

I second a silk pillowcase, so cool in summer.
It"s winter.

Not that id be disgusted to receive a silk pillow case. Id never buy one but id try it if it was my ss gift.

I risk outing myself here but somebody upthread said "hand cream" and i held up the still untouched hand cream i got 2 years ago and said in hood humour (i hope that was understood!) no handcream i have a lifetime's supply

FinallyHere · 02/12/2021 08:42

I'm close to that demographic and my top rule is a ban on anything that needs to be dusted. Consumables are good.

Flowers or a plant, p'raps with a festive these so no guilt if it doesn't survive the season.

More importantly, why does she need a present? I regift most of what I am given (

see rule above)

KimikosNightmare · 02/12/2021 08:54

Gift hair care box DIY/art kits (like ]] or ]]) Custom desk calendar Portable humidifier Coffee voucher
No to all of them.

And no to silk pillowcase too.

steppemum · 02/12/2021 09:21

@ExcessiveIyDisorganised

I had a silk pillowcase, it made zero difference to my skin and hair and felt all cold and slippery, I gave it away.
yep, that would be me. I don't have trouble brushing my hair in the morning, and I am not aware of waking up looking creased!
Shadedog · 02/12/2021 09:22

I’m nearly 50

I’d like
I small hamper of nice food - maybe a few bits from m&s that I’d actually eat or nice coffee etc.
Good candle (which I see she doesn’t like)
Book (v subjective)
Pyjamas - next have some nice ones in that price range but it’s a bit odd maybe getting an unrelated adult pyjamas
Nice mug (large, China, useful)
I quite like cook books and cooking stuff and also bolloxy craft stuff but, again, subjective.
Houseplant
Really good flask/travel mug (I have 143 shite ones)

I don’t like
Anything smelly - hand cream, perfume etc
Silk pillow cases - tried them, don’t like
Anything alcohol related (but I have opposite problem - I don’t drink enough)
Flowers - love them growing outdoors - hate them inside in a vase. Although I do like bulbs/plants
Vouchers - just think it’s a bit crap for a secret Santa - you join in because you want a present, not because you want your money back in a less convenient form.

I think consumables are best. Failing that something from a big shop with a gift receipt.

sorry, but all these are a firm no.

I am very very picky about any products on my skins and hair, as otherwise I get severe eczema. I immediately regift any smellies at all, unless they are ones I have specifically asked for. Even so my family still get this wrong Hmm

For that reason I never gift smellies of any kind.
and as someone who likes crafts, I would seriously hate a 'craft kit.

lots of good suggestions on this thread, it is really hard as people have such different tastes, but, in general, I would say buy from a high street shop, and include gift receipt. Make sure it looks nice and well thought through.

@TheNarwhalBalloon

I just wanted to point out it's so rude to use a title as you have, with "Go" as though giving an order, and nowhere in your post do you say please or thanks. I see this all the time on facebook... We're not your minions.
Thank you for highlighting this, I hate it. It just seems rude to me, I find please and thank you to be lacking amongst adults recently.
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/12/2021 19:03

If somebody presented me with a portable humidifier, I actually don't think I'd be able to stop myself from asking them if they'd gone stark staring bonkers.

Not quite as bad as the discuss thing. E.g. Should I tell people what they should or should not post. Discuss!
