My kids love it when I get the stack of Christmas books down from the loft on 1st Dec. They really enjoy listening to me read a book or two at bedtime - we have the usual Father Christmas Needs A Wee, Jolly Christmas Postman type books - but they are heading towards the end of primary school now and I want to add some more grown up books to our collection. I've got the longer books, like Christmas Pig and Christmasaurus, but they've specifically asked for books that can be read in ONE NIGHT (can possibly convince them to stretch it to two nights). Any recommendations for one/two night read Christmas books that aren't too babyish? I plan to get an illustrated copy of the Michael Morpurgo writing of The Snowman, also an illustrated version of The Christmas Carol (might be too long??), and I have the new Maggie O'Farrell Where Snow Angels Go which looks perfect. So anything that's 50-100 pages-ish, preferably with colour illustrations is what I need!

A Christmas Carol isn't long.

Sorry, ignore me, I hadn't noticed you'd already mentioned this in your post!

This one isn't so easy to read out loud because it's a graphic novel but Raymond Briggs's Father Christmas (and Father Christmas Goes on Holiday) is brilliant.

Thank you! Yes, we have Christmas Carol to read. We have Father Christmas too - they like looking through the book but prefer to just listen to me read something. Don't know why, they love graphic novels at all other times!

Their favourite book is the Empty Stocking by Richard Curtis - a picture book that has decent paragraphs on each page so is a good 15 minute read. Feel I should get something more advanced now (although will continue to read this one too!) so hopefully Christmas Carol and some others, if I can find any, will hit the spot.

Ive recently bought my daughter Terry Pratchett's Father Christmas's Fake Beard. It's a collection of short stories.

Thank you - will take a look
