Present recommendations - kids books on CD

Hoping for some audio CD recommendations please! We have an oldish car with a CD player and no way to stream from a phone. As we do lots of driving (there and back seeing family in the Midlands, from London), would love to get the DCs some audiobooks on CD to fill the time. Kids are 3 and 6. We have some Roald Dahl stories read by Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie etc already, which are a big hit.

We have Winnie the Pooh read by Bernard Cribbins. We all love it - has got us through some grim motorway journeys.

Tigerwhocameforsupper · 28/11/2021 07:22

Have a look at a Yoto player. They have just released a mini one that they could take in the car.

PanicBuyingSprouts · 28/11/2021 07:26

Paddington read by Stephen Fry was loved by my 2 when they were younger.

Kathsmum · 28/11/2021 07:26

Dr Zeus is amazing I can still remember green eggs and ham, David walliams or Rowling for older. Maybe join audible and you can sample to hear reader as it makes such a difference. Wind in the willows my fave so far also good for long journeys for you x

MalbecandToast · 28/11/2021 07:27

My lot love the worst witch, Harry Potter, the sheep pig and the Julia Donaldson stories Smile

The Narnia series narrated by Michael Hordon are wonderful. His voice is perfect for the stories. They are abridged though.

I also love Ann Rachlin's Fun With Music series, where she tells the stories of classical music. She is excellent and captures the mood of the music. Sinbad and the Wizard Eagle, Chou Chou's Birthday and The Pines of Rome are all available on CD, as well as others.

If you are able to download digital audio books, would you be able to burn them to CDs for the car?

Naughtynovembertree · 28/11/2021 08:01

If you can down load the old story teller stories, read by host of British actors including joanna lumley etc... Amazing.

WhiteSandyBeach · 28/11/2021 09:01

Some great suggestions, thanks all! @Latenightreader am intrigued by the Ann Rachlin idea in particular.

Unfortunately the car lags behind the rest of our tech. We no longer have the ability to burn CDs. Hoping most of these are available on eBay.

Here is a link to Ann Rachlin’s page where you can read more and hear samples. I bought a couple of cds via Amazon, but the page says you can contact her direct. I still have my childhood cassette versions!

MamaWeasel · 28/11/2021 21:25

The famous five audio cds were very popular with my children when they were young, as were the Alex Ryder audiobooks

Rantyrantason · 28/11/2021 21:30

The Mr Gum series by Andy Stanton read by Andy Stanton are brilliant. Really funny!

BeaLola · 28/11/2021 23:18

Narnia
Paddington
Gangsta Granny
Black Beauty
The Jungle Book
Michael Morpurgo
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Danny Champion of the World

These were all favourites of DS for long car journeys etc as well as Peter & The Wolf and The Carnival of the Animals

When he got older Harry Potter and Alex Rider

DelurkingAJ · 28/11/2021 23:20

Faraway Tree and The Wishing Chair were both big hits here. Read by Kate Winslet and bought back in the day from The Book People for very little.

Carboncheque · 28/11/2021 23:32

It might be cheaper to buy an external DVD/CD Drive to hook up to your laptop so you can burn CDs. They’re about £20 on Amazon.

MojoJojo71 · 28/11/2021 23:39

The Julia Donaldson collection. You can get the set of CDs on eBay

Thank you for the link to that site! I searched for these quite a few years ago, and I don’t think it was as easy then to get them. This site has a link to them all on Spotify!! I am still rather sad that you don’t seem to be able to get An Americat in Paris any more, though. Think there were copywrite issues or something.
Talipesmum · 29/11/2021 00:27

There are a great series of fairy stories read by Tamsin Greig and Stephen Mangan - Pinocchio & other stories, Aladdin & other stories etc.

A bit old for the 3 year old but How to train your dragon audiobooks are top notch, read by David tennant. (Nb book plot is not the same as film plot, both are good!)

Ramona Quimby is on audiobook as well I think.

Talipesmum · 29/11/2021 00:28

Oh yes, and definitely Dragons at Crumbling Castle, and The witches vacuum cleaner - early Terry Pratchett short stories for younger children. There are plenty of them too.
