i love it when people by ds clothes - they are needed and he has tonnes of toys that take up too much room!! my friend seems to think people should only buy things that can provide her dc with entertainment

when our dcs were babies, people bought so many clothes we had nowhwhere to put them! Now they are bigger 2.5 and 4.5 friends and rellies tend to buy toys that will make them popular with the kids! We have a houseful of toys and despite a clever storage redisign this year i am still worried about where we will put them. MIL has bought ds a giant remote control fire engine when he has maybe 5 different ssized fire engines as it is (he will grow out of them soon won't he God???)

i am the rebel this year. I have bought all my nieces and nephews posh little outfits and a book each so they feel they have something nice to unwrap too.

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 16/12/2007 23:05

but 1dilemma surely you have all the toys they need to? maybe people think it is more practical to have clothes than lots of toys you don't need?

jezzemxmas · 16/12/2007 23:23

Oh no I love it.
They get so many toys, adding another one to the pile, to fit in a very full bedroom fills me with dread! so when someone buys clothes I

expatinscotland · 16/12/2007 23:25

Clothes are FAB! Would a great gift.

DD1 loves clothes and dressing up. That's like toys to her.

1dilemma · 16/12/2007 23:39

Oh yes Port & you're prob right. I had the handmedowns as a child and hated it and she is a second girl and prob did the same so maybe that's why. I guess I hadn't really appreciated that
Addicted we're actually pretty frugal so there was quite a bit of stuff she could have got or she could have done what I do which is for little ones who are not the first is get stuff for an older child.
Actually it's not the getting clothes for pressies bit I hate as I explained it's giving the second clothes and not the first (asking for trouble!!!) and the bit about my SIL getting sizes & seasons wrong since the clothes are all from elsewhere no chance to swap them for a bigger size. I find the waste really upsetting.
The 2 of you have got me wishing for clothes for them now mind you my Mother has got my eldest a pair of the most boring plain socks and my SIL tells me she has got them all 'tank tops' this year.....
I actually find all the 'stuff' really stressful I can't stand it when people gie them endless variations on a theme I think we have about 4 thomas the tank engines!! what a dreadful waste 40 quid on identical trains! I nearly had a panic attack last time I went shopping I hate it.
Maybe I should start a thread on what to get the youngest of people who have lots of same sex children!!

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 16/12/2007 23:46

oooh i love tank tops. ds lives in them with a white vest underneath or white top and vest for when its cooler. so easy to get him dressed in the morning with them! people always seem to get him tank tops and jeans/cords which is fine by me cos that's what i buy anyway. they must have taken good notes to pass around

1dilemma · 16/12/2007 23:51

I knew I shouldn't havementioned the tank tops!!

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 16/12/2007 23:54

tehe i take it you don't like them.

I love buying ds toys, but I hate buying him clothes. I hate buying myself clothes, come to that.

So, yes. Clothes for Christmas and birthdays are ace. The only trouble is that kids' clothing is always mammoth.

DS is on the 75th centile for height and weight, and yet everything we've ever bought him for his age range has been too big. That's where a problem might arise, if buyers aren't too familiar with the shape or size of your child.

1dilemma · 17/12/2007 01:12

I think I'm neutral on the tank top.
I expect to be pleasantly surprised come Christmas Day, there has been quite a bit of talk on here about the tank top

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 17/12/2007 01:40

oh no.can't believe i missed a chat about tank tops

I buy my niece and nephews clothes as they get so many toys. Niece is easy to buy for and loves clothes so no probs. Nephew 1 is now 9 and prob won't be that impressed with clothes but I got them books as well.

Occasionally have been given clothes for DS - he is now 6. Last year some relatives of MIL gave him a gorgeous brown John Rocha sweatshirty/fleecy. In age 8. I love it and can't wait till he can wear it but he is currently wearing the age 6 one that MIL bought when he was 3!

piximon · 17/12/2007 11:59

I'm always grateful when the DCs get clothes, although one year my dad bought DS1 a pair of girls trousers and the previous year my mum bought him a girls jumper

SSStollenzeit · 17/12/2007 12:00

no, always happy to get clothes

TheBlonde · 17/12/2007 23:34

1dilemma - you should sell the stuff on ebay and then buy what you want/need with the proceeds

1dilemma · 17/12/2007 23:43

I'm a bit narked with ebay!!
I'm not sure I'm up to all that buying and selling tbh, I'm actually still up because I'm ment to be finishing cards/pressies/wrapping and trying to find some stuff for work!!

hoarsewhisperer · 18/12/2007 08:03

mY DS'S last year got really cool dinosaur pyjamas as one of their presents and they LOVED them.

We get given quite alot of clothes and most are lovely. I have to say that my family usually includes the receipt in an envelope to mummy with the instruction "if you don't like what we've got them., or it doesn't fit...open the envelope and exchange...if you do like it...throw it away unopened".

Pinkchampagne · 18/12/2007 08:09

I love it when people buy my boys clothes. They're not so excited by it, but they get stacks of toys.
I have one friend who always gets them clothes, and I am very grateful!

LoveAngelGabriel · 18/12/2007 09:34

I love it! My DS grows so fast and we spend a bloody fortune on clothing him -it's nice to have some help with the cost, tbh! Especially as people tend to buy quite nice little 'dressy' outfits as gifts, which means I can concentrate on buying cheap t shirts and trackie bottoms for him to ruin at nursery!

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 18/12/2007 09:55

I still think it is wrong that DS gets a cool toy while DD gets an outfit. Especially as DD's wardrobe is stuffed to the ginnels and it is just as hard to find a home for the clothes as for the toys in her case. Because DD is my second child she is the rather fortunate recipient of heaps of handmedowns from my friend's girls in as new condition.

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 18/12/2007 23:52

i agree it is wrong to get one child a toy and another clothes, but if you get them all the same then i personally think it is ok. clothes are much easier to store than big bulky toys!

OP posts:
ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 18/12/2007 23:52

(another reason why i like books)

OP posts:
wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 19/12/2007 08:57

Yes I think clothes are OK as a theme. Just gets my goat slightly that it is the child who doesn't actually need clothes that gets bought them.

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 19/12/2007 08:57

And I love books....

SatsumaMoon · 19/12/2007 10:31

I don't mind my children being given clothes - dd is too old for toys anyway, ds1 doesn't really play with toys so is hard to buy for - not so keen on them for ds2 because he gets so many hand-me-downs he has loads of clothes anyway. But I do remember as a child not being overly impressed with clothes as gifts - and ds1 was almost in tears last weekend when he saw the gifts that had arrived from my sister - not been opened yet but he said they were "squishy"
