i love it when people by ds clothes - they are needed and he has tonnes of toys that take up too much room!! my friend seems to think people should only buy things that can provide her dc with entertainment

Depends a lot on the type of clothes and the sizing. e.g. I don't like it if people buy stuff for ds with things like Spiderman etc on, as he hates it. Also we have been given "sets" of clothes, e.g. top and trousers in same size, but as ds is about 2 sizes different (at the moment is in age 4-5 trousers, age 6-7 tops(actual age just 7)) this can be a bit of a problem. It wasn't too bad when he was a baby, but since then he has just grown different parts of his body at different rates! Buying pyjamas is a nightmare btw!

Depends who's buying!

My MIL, bless her, buys some truly awful clothes for my two; the latest is a pink padded tracksuit that makes my fey M&S/Next/Boden wearing dd look like Vicky Pollard .

1dilemma · 16/12/2007 11:54

OK let me be the only one who hates it!!.... will explain why later when dh goes out and I've played with the kids

NKF · 16/12/2007 11:56

No. I never get annoyed with people buying my children presents. I think it's very kind of them.

TEUCHywithallthetrimmings · 16/12/2007 12:00

I like clothes but in the right size!!!! DS hasn't even grown into the clothes he got from PIL last christmas!!

Obviously grateful for any gift for DS though

TEUCHywithallthetrimmings · 16/12/2007 12:01

I might add that we got PJ's as a gift when he was newborn that were age 3-4

mumbear · 16/12/2007 12:12

I think its a pain in the arse. Dont get me wrong its a lovely thought but my DD is really big for her age so I spend time trudging around the shops trying to get the bigger size. Also my mother wants to dress her like a mini Jodie Marsh and my MIL wants to dress her like a little poodle. V. bad combination. There is also the problem that you get to many things that you dont need ie when my DD was born we were given 17 pairs of pajamas in size 3-6months! She wore each pair about 3 times and them they went in the loft. A bit of a waste really.

ADDICTEDtosayingHAAAAAAAPYxmas · 16/12/2007 13:00

i know what you mean. we got 15 pairs of dungarees for ds so i went back and swapped some for different outfits and some for different sizes. a bit of a pain but i would have had to go shopping for him anyway had we not been given stuff for him.

Clothes are great! My family ask, and I tell them sizes, and they know the sorts of things he normally wear - so that's what they buy. If we get duplicates, one gets swapped, no big deal.

HappyMummyOfOne · 16/12/2007 13:49

I dont like clothes for christmas for children, I like fun not practical presents for kids. I always remember my brothers feeling their pressies and putting the soft ones to one side to open last.

Every year DS's aunty buys him an outfit that is 3 sizes too big and something I would never dress him in anyway. He wears different sized tops to trousers so sets never fit and is skinny so needs adj waists.

I much prefer to shop for his clothes myself, I tend to do it in bulk at the start of each season or whenever the new next book is out.

unknownrebelbang · 16/12/2007 16:54

Never bothered me tbh. Can't say the boys are unduly bothered either.

The only thing that grates is when the w stepmama buys stuff for the boys she often gets the wrong size.

Taste/style could be an issue now the lads are getting older though, lol.

Still, tis the thought that counts, so they say.

stockingfiller · 16/12/2007 16:56

no i love them getting dd clothes! apart from when my sister doesnt consider the size and weather!

cece · 16/12/2007 16:59

Prefer clothes to plastic toys crap.

My DC were always thrilled to get new clothes.

JingleBelgoHoHoHo · 16/12/2007 17:13

I don't mind them buying new clothes. What I don't like is them giving second hand clothes that don't fit and they haven't even bothered washing, and are sometimes broken grrrr... this has happened several times with family members.

becklesparkle · 16/12/2007 17:34

My DSs are 7.5 and 4.11 and they love getting clothes as pressies! They usually get given 'cooler' stuff than I buy them!

Bouncingturtle · 16/12/2007 17:44

I do both for my two nieces - I buy them an outfit and a toy each. I check with MIL about what size to get, she looks after them regularly so always knows. And I pay close attention to what they wear so I know mI'll get something that SIL & BIL will like the girls in.

PortAndLemonaid · 16/12/2007 17:44

DS is nearly three and likes getting clothes, so long as they fit in with his own particular prejudices. I'm quite happy for him to get clothes provided I like them . I suspect DD may end up being bought more in the pink-and-frilly line than I am entirely comfortable with, so I suppose hypothetically that could be more of an issue.

Oblomov · 16/12/2007 17:48

I prefer clothes to toys. I often buy others clothes. A receipt aswell, so they can change them.

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 16/12/2007 18:03

I do have a bit of an issue sometimes when DS gets tons of cool toys and DD gets clothes. Doesn't seem fair. Just because DD is the only girl in the family (on both sides) does not mean she is a walking clothes horse for everyone to get "cute and girly" out of their system. Fortunately DD is quite girly and does like clothes so it is not too bad.

1dilemma · 16/12/2007 22:49

Ok I'll explain
It's obv. not annoying that someone has got my dcs gifts it's that all my dcs are the same sex therefore I would always presume that I kind of have all the things I need for that age child (all born in same season too), one SIL gets clothes for my younger dc but not the older!! the other SIL lives in Oz and always sends things that will be too small by the time that season comes around so they end up pretty much never being worn and I hate the waste!!

PortAndLemonaid · 16/12/2007 22:53

My guess would be that your SIL assumes that the younger DC only normally get hand-me-downs and thinks it would be nice to get them something new of their own?
