DD aged 10 loves all things arty and I am looking for some ideas for Christmas gifts that will suit her age and actually get used .

We have thought about an easel but I am not sure how much it would get used and then wondered about maybe some sort of creative tablet ?

We have Posca pens on the list already .

Any ideas ?

Something like this would have gone down well when my DD was that age...www.hobbycraft.co.uk/mixed-media-art-set-126-pieces/618782-1000

What about Paint by numbers kit?

HikingforScenery · 20/11/2021 18:54

A friend bought this for her then 11 year old last Christmas

A book that is a reproduction of someone's sketchbook. There are so many, a nature themed one is
Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden (might be a bit daunting model for a youngster as the paintings are quite good)
Or a how-to book, again there are millions on sketching and journalling, for example
Keeping a Nature Journal by Claire Walker Leslie (quite approachable)

Plus a blank sketchbook, pencils/pens and a tiny watercolour set to start her own journal/sketchbook.

Other themes besides nature are available of course.

Depending on how far she is with her art, I know Prisma Colours (?) are apparently the bee's knees for coloured pencils.

Have a look at the Baker Ross website. My daughter loves their ceramic decorating pens that you can use on glass and ceramics. They do blank mugs etc so she can decorate them. They have lots of other great art stuff too and are not too expensive

The Art Shop Skipton Artists Dalby Wooden Table Box Easel www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01AG9KL0I/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_6MFGF0241QGN9DD9HX5S

I got an easel similar to this for my then 9yo DD. She's 12 and still uses it. Got paints, canvasses and brushes and it's nice to store everything in.

Arteza is excellent for good quality art supplies - my DD loves their sets.

On the advice of my daughter’s art teacher, I bought this book www.amazon.co.uk/Addictive-Sketcher-Adebanji-Alade/dp/1782215824?tag=mumsnetforu03-21
I also bought her some Faber castell pencils and a pink pig sketchbook.

She now has lots of pink pig books and is doing Art GCSE as well as photography GCSE and is planning to do Art A level.

Caran d’ache colouring pencils. Small water colour set. A sketchbook. But go to an art shop and get good materials. Cheap stuff isn’t worth it.

Shinyflecks · 20/11/2021 19:16

Support your nearest art shop. Don’t buy art materials from Amazon 😰

neonleopard · 20/11/2021 21:28

Digital art? If you have an iPad you get a cheap version of an Apple Pencil and the procreate app? There are some fab YouTube tutorials.

LoveFall · 20/11/2021 21:35

I bought myself a beginners watercolour set on Amazon. It had a big paper pad, a set of paints, and brushes. It is not much fun to use watercolour paints on regular paper. So if you get a watercolour set, get proper watercolour paper also.

Cherryrainbow · 20/11/2021 21:50

I just bought a load of Art stuff from amazon for my arty nephew age 8

B crafty acrylic paint pens (can be used on a variety of materials)

Books that practice the styles and techniques of famous artists and gives them scope to try their own ideas:
Art masterclass with kandinsky
Art masterclass with van gogh

I also bought him a scavenger Art book where they find objects like 9 books, plants etc. And there are 9 Square panels per page of ideas to fill in different ways.

We’ve just given our daughter this for her birthday:

Thanks so much for all the replies ! So many lovely things. We seem to have tons of paints already so will need to see what we actually have.
Am looking at the books as well.

This is interesting- this is basically her dream! She has been asking for procreate but would need a new ipad so that is probably not realistic.
