I want my husband to be Santa Claus

Did you know that in some European countries, Santa actually comes to see you?
There's a knock on the door sometime during the day, Santa comes in and gives everyone presents from his sack (don't) and then goes off to fly away to the next house. It's usually the man of the house who says something like "I'm just going out for milk" then comes back a couple of minutes later dressed as Santa. You can also get Santa's for hire.

I would love to make this a tradition but husband thinks it's weird. He looked at me like I had 3 heads when I brought it up. I don't think I can swing the santa look, barely breaking 5ft. How do I convince him?

Also, something putting me off is that there was a thread last year about someone hiring a Santa and some elves to come over for a chat and to give a gift some time before the big day but due to restrictions could only stay outside. People thought it unfair that other kids would be able to see Santa but not get any attention from him etc. Obviously, the same thing applies if "Santa" was observed entering our house. "why is Santa going to see them but not us?" sort of thing.

Do you think it would be unfair on other kids if I managed to convince DH to do this?

We used to go to my aunt and uncle for Christmas. My uncle, a vet, always got an emergency call around 3 then shortly after there was a knock on the door and, lo and behold, there was Santy! Presents handed out to all the kids , lots of jollity then off he went. When my Uncle came back he was amazed to hear what had happened. I never twigged until I was of an age where I no longer believed but I can still remember the magic. It's a treasured memory.

Santa is more fun when he's kept mystical and magical. When he starts texting kids or appearing on Zoom calls or knocking at the door, it just becomes a guy in a suit and it's awkward all round.

Here, I guess. In other countries, clearly not.

Yep. Having lived in a country where Santa actually turns up, it’s always a bit cringe and I think means children stop believing sooner.

You could be an Elf?

Though this was a sex fantasy from the thread title 🎅🏾🤣

As you were.

Our neighbour did this one Xmas eve. It was really lovely and thoughtful of them. The kids were given a chocolate santa and yes they knew it was the neighbour but who cares.....he was spreading some Xmas joy. (We weren't close to our neighbours so that made it even more thoughtful).

I spent half my Christmases in Sweden and half in the UK as a child growing up due to having Swedish family. In the UK we did it the usual UK way, in Sweden my family did what you want your husband to do. I don't see how it would work here though. In Sweden they celebrate on our equivalent of Christmas Eve and have Christmas lunch first and then do gifts. Santa comes late on in the day. As a child I believed in Santa until I was about 8 or 9. My parents told me Santa visits the kids in Sweden because they live close to lapland and then he does everyone else overnight. I totally believed this and therefore seperated the two in my head.

I think its a bit weird for santa to only be visiting some houses in person in UK on Christmas and not others but thats just my opinion. It might be fun to do it differently when in different countries.

BTW my 7 year old daughter 100% still believes in santa now so maybe youll get longer than you think.

Weeks from giving birth, I'm not sure there are any elf outfits I would fit in to 😂 also, I don't think DS is that thick...

People can celebrate a lovely Christmas without Santa Claus. He is part of one specific culture and one specific way to celebrate Christmas and the returning of live and light.
Those who don't have him do not miss him and do not need him, though marketing people try to introduce him every year Grin

Am I being daft in not seeing why it would be a big deal if kids realise the Santa is dad/grandad/neighbour pretending? Why can the magic of Christmas not partly be the shared humour of the ‘game’ of a man flying around the world in one night to deliver presents? That sounds healthier to me than insisting on an illusion of magic than must not be shattered, at which point stockings stop and everyone gets £50 in a card instead of gifts.

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 20/11/2021 22:32

Our milkman used to do this for the kids on his rounds and we'd get a selection box. I totally believed he was Santa, but after I recognised him one year I also believed Santa had a sideline as a milkman the rest of the year. I was a gullible child Grin

Sounds like an outline for a bad porn film.

That genuinely made me laugh aloud.
