Just that really. She is a brilliant, no brands, no needy child. Never given a list ever. Never asks for anything. She has a phone, Chromebook, everything she needs for dance hobby, diffuser, beautiful bedroom. Her birthday was a few weeks ago and totally clueless I ended up taking her away in a hotel for a spa. She loved it but I feel another experience is missing the mark a bit. Much younger brother so tree will be piled up for him. Oh and she has an Oodie (last year's thread save!). Any inspiration out there?

@StillIncredulous

I have to work really hard on remembering that I believe and wish to bring my children up similarly, that the acquisition of "things" is not an aim, they can all be stripped away in an instant. But I understand why parents feel under pressure to provide them, and children feel entitled to receive. I wish society measured success more obviously in the internal things like contentment rather than external trainers & electricals. Whilst I don't wish to be either parent in 'About A Boy' it's difficult to hold the line in the middle, isn't it? Also, it's interesting watching so many parents treat their daughters especially as mini adults with the type of gifts they give.
What presents do you think 16 year olds should get then?

Sixteen IS a “mini adult.” I moved out of my parents home when I was 16, so I felt like an adult at that age.

Ichangedmynameonce · 17/11/2021 23:02

F

IncyWinceySpiderWillies · 17/11/2021 23:20

What is “F”? 2 people have commented it. Is F the new Biscuit or something?

Or does it mean Follow/placemarking?

Excitedforxmas · 17/11/2021 23:26

Ring light for her social media

PandaP0p · 17/11/2021 23:33

@IncyWinceySpiderWillies yes. It means following

It's a bit rude tbh. Either turn on notifications / 'watch' the thread or contribute something helpful

I think a piece of jewellery would be nice - she’s 16 so I think the right time for a nice piece she can wear her whole life.

Other than that I’m not sure - it sounds like she has lots of lovely things and doesn’t want anything else. If she does dance, what about a nice tracksuit? My dd does dance and she likes to have a soft tracksuit and pull on boots to wear over her dance wear to go into/leave the studio.

Kanaloa · 17/11/2021 23:55
@kikkomam sounds like lovely gifts. And you are absolutely right, nothing to do with her being grounded. But I lost my job during COVID and I think she's very aware of not asking for things because we struggled a bit and now I am back on my feet I want to treat her but I'm really struggling! I will look at silk pillowcase, no idea about those! I have bought her a silk turban for her stocking as she has madly curly hair!
Bless her, she sounds lovely and very aware of how expensive Christmas can be. I’m sure whatever you get her she’ll be very happy and grateful.

Karwomannghia · 20/11/2021 07:12

Similar thread got dd the oodie thing last year which was a hit, I’ve got some more good ideas here thank you!

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 20/11/2021 08:17

One year we bought my DD some more grown up bedding and room accessories (new lamp, baskets etc)

If she has lots of makeup, what about a makeup lesson?

Voucher for her and her friend to go for afternoon tea.

Loungewear and slipper boots

Cookery or baking book with appropriate accessories

Stocking filler type things: nice notebook; makeup brush cleaner; fluffy socks, makeup remover, stationery items for school/college; body sprays;

snugglyblanket · 20/11/2021 09:02

Can I ask why you are against doing experiences again? Is it because you like something to open? If so, you can find plenty of creative ways to wrap a voucher. I assume she'll have a few other bits to unwrap anyway. She's old enough to know that more expensive gifts usually mean a smaller pile.

My teen's favourite gift is theatre tickets. Every year we do a 'girls day', with theatre, breakfast or lunch and a look around the sales if she got any money from Christmas/saved from birthday. This is genuinely her favourite gift & is her main present. She was very disappointed last year that we couldn't do it. I don't see the point in buying 'stuff' if she doesn't want it. I don't want stuff cluttering my room either so I don't see the point in doing that to others. For her birthday she asked to do an escape room with her friends.

As she is 16, why not ask her if she'd prefer something to unwrap or something to 'do' ? A young driver course perhaps, not long until she's old enough from proper lessons.

Otherwise: Posca pens, subscription (magazine, books, socks, Scrawlrbox), grown-up Lego set (flowers maybe?), adult colouring book & lovely pencils, signed book from a favourite author, baking/cooking equipment, fancy chocolates, hoodie from her favourite show, treat box from another country.

Full length mirror
Oodie
Wax seal kit
Book Embosser
Shower steamers

thisplaceisweird · 20/11/2021 13:02

At that age my mum bought me a really beautiful blanket and hot water bottle 'of my own' rather than just family/house ones that I still own! From either the white company or Laura Ashley (rip)
Took them to uni a few years later and they've stayed special!

Whatliesbeneath707 · 20/11/2021 20:08

Great suggestions everyone - you’ve given me some good ideas.
My 13 dd has asked for a pregnancy pillow 😂😂She’s not pregnant but likes the look of them.

thisplaceisweird · 20/11/2021 20:58

@Whatliesbeneath707 I've seen ones that look like a torso with an arm for snuggling up to. Could be a more fun way of giving that gift!!

VelmaKelly88 · 20/11/2021 21:54

I know what you mean but don't feel rubbish. Whatever you buy for your children I'm sure and hope will be appreciated, you don't need to spend alot on stuff to show them you care,even if I had money to burn I wouldn't get that much for mine as for me it's just to extravagant in one go. Have a lovely Christmas

Victoria1083 · 21/11/2021 02:46

My DD16 doesn’t want/need anything. So I am getting her some useful things which I hope she will like:

 • a cashmere jumper,
 • a ted baker sweatshirt;
 • a mini bag/phone holder from Coach;
 • l’occitane body wash and soap with refills;
 • some books: personality tests book, DK Bioligy, DK Astrology + a couple fiction ones;
 • a new pair of trainers;
 • a woolly jumper
 • socks, chocolates, gloves for her stocking
Victoria1083 · 21/11/2021 02:47

Oh and tickets to Six the musical

BasiliskStare · 21/11/2021 03:10

I know people have said Oodies but I bought for my niece ( similar age ) a big pashmina type thing ( it was not hundreds of pounds which many are ) but she loved it as could snuggle up in it or used as outdoor wear

TammyTwoSwanson · 21/11/2021 03:34

My ds is the same age and really hard to buy for too. He's not into brands or consoles or anything like that, but things that have been hits
over the last couple of years are:

Concert tickets
Weekend city break

Toastie and waffle maker
Blend active for smoothies
A big German 80s tankard for his tea (?!)
Drawing tablet
Ergonomic set-up for the desk in his room - laptop stand, foot rest, keyboard etc
Coloured WiFi lamps for his room
Taiko drum game thing
Comfy all weather waterproof vans hightop boots - perfect for dog walks in the wet/mud/snow but also look cool and go with everything apparently
Polaroid camera and film packs
Electric toothbrush/nice toiletries and face care stuff
