I'd like to get a gift for my soon to be 12 year old neighbour. She has just moved her from abroad and so doesn't have many friends or any family here. I know she is homesick too so would like to do something nice for her birthday which is Christmas week.

Trouble is I can't even remember what would have gone down well with me when I was 12! She is quite mature for her age, but her mum is rather conservative so I don't want to offend her with make up or something like that.

Depends how much you want to spend, these are the sort of things my dd13 is having this year: fluffy bed socks, sort of sheepskin lined slipper boots, perfume, friends dvd's, scrapbook kit, small artists easel/ carry case & watercolours, rubik's cube, wind up torch, nice scarf from accessorize, voucher for local milshake place, throw for her bed, photo frames.

Sparkly photo frame that she can put pictures of her old friends in.

Like the bed socks idea though, Matalan have these in for about £5.

Sponge bob square pants things from new look very popular with this age at mo.

Oh some lovely ideas there thank you - like the idea of the bed socks or a nice scarf. She has moved her from a much warmer climate so I think she is finding the UK weather a bit of a shock! Thank you all.

Second the scarf from accessorise, I got my friends daughter one for xmas when she was 12, she still wears it now, sometimes as a belt and she's now 15.
