Talk to me about potted Christmas trees?

Hi! I’m thinking of getting one for my front porch (it’s open like a big step if that makes sense) with some battery operated lights.

What do I do after Christmas? Do I need to plant it? Can I keep it in the pot and move it to another part of my garden for next year? Anything else I should know?

You can see I’m not great at gardening...

It should be OK in the pot for the following Xmas. Just make sure you water it well during dry weather.

After that I find you either need to plant it out or move to a bigger pot.

Thank you!

I still have the one I bought 2 Christmases ago. It really needs a bigger pot though

Put it in the garden and see how long it lasts. They can last years in the pot

Make sure your tree is pot grown - this means its roots are intact in the pot it has grown in. Many potted trees are trees that have been dug up and put into pots for sale but their roots are damaged in the process and very unlikely to survive.

My pot grown tree is approaching its third Christmas, I've moved it up to a bigger pot once and will likely do again next year but it's still doing fine.

Can you have a potted tree inside or does it die off?

We had friends who had one in the garden that they brought in for Christmas. It was fine. It was very small though as the pot was really heavy so they couldn’t manage a bigger one.
