What to buy 21 year old female

EsmeraldaFudge · 13/11/2021 22:07

DS1 and his relatively new GF will be spending Christmas with us. We've not met her yet and Christmas is likely to be the first time we do meet.
I want to get her a couple of gifts for Christmas Day but have no clue. My own DD is only 8 so not really up to speed with what 21 year olds are really into.
Any advice and ideas appreciated!

Has your son not told you anything about her?

EsmeraldaFudge · 13/11/2021 22:12

Not a huge amount. Job, family etc but not a great deal about what she likes. I have asked for some ideas but thought I might also ask for some ideas on here

What is she like? Is she into make up or not.

MrsDThaskala · 13/11/2021 22:14

I'd go for a nice mascara like a Chanel one. £20 I think

EsmeraldaFudge · 13/11/2021 22:15

DS1 is in the armed forces and quite a distance from home hence us not meeting yet and knowing very little

You probably can't go wrong with a boots soap and glory set if you are struggling.

Mrsjayy · 13/11/2021 22:19

My twenty something Dds love a scarf and hat.fat face have nice sets

mibbelucieachwell · 13/11/2021 22:21

My DD is mid twenties but she would probably appreciate luxury socks/gloves/scarf. A nice bottle of special edition gin. Luxury foodstuffs such as choccies, jam, fancy biscuits in a nice tin, selection of herbal teas, a bag - though tricky to know her style, candles, body wash, hand cream,

EsmeraldaFudge · 13/11/2021 22:27

Thanks all. Having a look around on your recommendations

I am 21 and buy myself things, might be helpful if I list a few things of what I got for my 21st?

-Zara/H&M gift card (all of my friends love these shops)
-Olaplex no.3 - this is a hair product which is absolutely amazing.
-wax melts
-lush gift set - snow fairy is an amazing range
-Filtr fake tan by Molly-Mae
-Beauty works products

Those are just a few things, I also like Zara perfumes but perfume can be very hit and miss cause everyone's tastes are different.

Keep us updated on what you get, can be inspiration!! X

As a female in my 20s I would say can't go wrong with a Yankee candle gift set or a nice 'soap and glory' gift set!

As a female with a daughter, two step daughters and four nieces I can state with absolute certainty that you can.

Find out a bit more about her OP and get her something she will actually like.

Snozzlemaid · 13/11/2021 22:46

My dd, 20 would always like a nice bottle of gin and a box of chocolates from Hotel Chocolat.

IncyWinceySpiderWillies · 13/11/2021 22:58

It might be boring but maybe just a voucher for somewhere like boots and a box of chocolates.
Bath products and alcohol aren’t good for someone you don’t know. Don’t get a voucher for cheap fast fashion clothes shops.

As a female in my 20s I am drowning in Yankee candles because people keep buying me them. It’s a waste because I hardly use them —they only get lit when the cat has a done a spectacularly stinky shit—

Agreed, also I think you can get points for buying the gift card or she can get points when she uses the card so a win win situation! Boots do many brands now also.

I’m in my late 20s so a bit older but I would actively dislike everything on that list apart from the H&M voucher. No offence, it just goes to show how different everyone is.

I think I’d get fancy chocolates, PP suggestion of mascara was a good one too. But really try and find out a bit more about her from your DS. Even if it’s just to find out what kind of alcohol she likes.

EsmeraldaFudge · 13/11/2021 23:19

I am hoping he gives me more information between now and then!

How about a voucher for local restaurant or theatre so they can go on a date? Make-up is a very personal thing, wouldn't buy that for anyone.

wickedthemusical · 13/11/2021 23:26

@PinkPlantCase no offence taken, just shows how different we all are! I was just listing what I got for my 21st and what a lot of women who are 21 get. X

ladycarlotta · 14/11/2021 01:42

I hear what people are saying about make-up being personal, but when I was in my skint twenties not so long ago I did love it when older family friends got me something like a Laura Mercier primer or Touche Eclat. Something not dependent on skin-tone or preference and solidly better quality than anything I could afford by myself.

So maybe those, or MAC strobe cream/Smashbox photo finish primer. Or a lovely posh nail varnish, eg Chanel rouge noir or OPI.

Posh chocs etc are a great shout, or perhaps a Uniqlo merino sweater/cardigan (around £30, less when they have their pre-xmas offer on), or nice wool scarf.

ladycarlotta · 14/11/2021 01:43

I guess I'm thinking of things that feel luxurious and good quality, and a little cut above what she might buy for herself. That kind of thing really perked up my daily life.

Floralnomad · 14/11/2021 01:47

I really don’t know why everyone is recommending Boots Soap and glory , I have a 22 yo daughter and she would hate that . I agree with pp that something nice in the chocolate line or a top from Uniqlo would be better .

CrocodilesCry · 14/11/2021 02:19

Can you pump your son for some info on what she might like and have some solid suggestions ready? Theatre voucher, chocolates, perfume, clothes voucher etc

I'm sure she'll be thrilled that her DPs parents have bought her a thoughtful gift regardless, but it's so hard knowing what to get without a few clues. I'd be chuffed with anything mentioned!

Femwitch · 14/11/2021 02:30

Yes sorry I'd steer clear of things that are skincare or makeup related, lots of people have reactions or otherwise just dislikes of lots of products, or just don't use them.

I would second the suggestion of buying something small to open where it really doesn't matter if it 'suits' as it is the thought that counts (small box of nice chocs or something), plus a gift voucher from somewhere with lots of options (eg JL or boots). I would include a note saying that you would like to buy her something she would enjoy, and you had thought perhaps some nice skincare or bag or candle (or whatever you want to put!) but you really want her to have something she will like so you hope she will have fun choosing it. Or words to that effect. That shows thoughfulness and consideration and an awareness that she is not just a generic '21 year old woman' and has her own tastes etc.
