Quality men's weekend bag/holdall?

This is actually for DHs upcoming 60th birthday rather than Christmas but thought there would be more traffic here :)

I'm looking for a nice quality bag for DH. Can be leather or canvas really but nothing too big or garish. He's not really into designers or obvious logos or anything. Don't want like a case or wheels and it's not for airport carry on. Just don't want him carrying in a sports backpack or squashing all his stuff into my bag. If it has a nice matching toiletry bag even better.

Thinking about £100ish for a bag and obviously a bit more for the wash bag. I can go more, but he'd enjoy it more if it wasn't mega expensive Grin

I am considering this one from M&S for DH.

I also like this wash bag

Appreciate M&S isn't particularly 'trendy' but I've always found their luggage and bags decent quality .

ElephantOfRisk · 13/11/2021 16:24

Thank you.

That's good to know - I don't need trendy, just something suitable for a 60 year old man that appreciates quality over labels.

I had seen that M&S one but I was sort of put off by the colour. I don't think he'd want black in a leather (but ok in a canvas type) but I didn't really like the brown.

I popped into town to look at stuff today but the only "big" store we have is M&S and it's not a big store so had nothing to see and I looked at TK Maxx who also had nothing.

I'm still undecided whether to buy one but will continue to look, if you let me know colour you would like if leather, will keep an eye out and let you know if I see anything. I usually look at TK Maxx first for anything they might stock, but didn't see anything on their website that appealed.

ElephantOfRisk · 13/11/2021 18:20

Thank you, I guess I mean a more natural leather colour, so tan or dark tan or brown but not that artificial looking flat chocolate colour. If canvas, I'm thinking black or navy or dark green/olive type maybe.

I have a day off on Monday so might head into a bigger city and have a look, only DH is off too and wants to go into town to get my Christmas present.

I really like the Apatchy ones. Reasonable prices I thought.

Have upcycled leather and canvas bags.

There were some lovely ones in an ethnic shop in Southsea I saw a while back. Lovely inexpensive leather. Wish I’d bought myself one. I’m trying to Google it now !

Lightisnotwhite · 13/11/2021 21:54

Or Amazon canvas and leather very inexpensive

LaChatte · 13/11/2021 21:58

Cabaia bags are pretty good quality, the L would be a decent size for a weekend bag.

AllTheCakes · 13/11/2021 22:01

John Lewis own brand one is great, but all currently out of stock unless you want their slightly more expensive version.

ElephantOfRisk · 13/11/2021 22:29

Thank you for all the suggestions, I'll take a look through them all.

Ideally I would have wanted to actually see and feel them but looks like that might not be possible.

My own one is basically a soft small case type holdall that I bought in John Lewis over 20 years ago when I started a job with regular travel. Although I don't travel for work anymore, everyone in the house wants to use it when we go away. It's expandable so it works for 2 people if it's just one night but when it's 2 nights it's not really big enough. It worked for me for 3 nights when I was going away but that's just one persons shoes and toiletries, not 2. I had looked on JL but hadn't seen very much that was suitable but I'll have another look.

This is when I miss having a Debenhams. The only dept store we have here now is a small M&S and a TK Maxx. There is a JL in the bigger city if we go on Monday so I might wait for then,

How about this?

I have a jacket from them and it’s really nice quality for the price. And I really like their company ethos.

WeeM · 14/11/2021 00:01

And matching wash bag:

ElephantOfRisk · 14/11/2021 00:33

Thanks. I really like that, DH has a weird thing about obvious logos sometimes which is the thing that's bothered me on some other lovely stuff I've seen. I really don't know as sometimes he seems unbothered and at other times he's cut things off or coloured them in with a sharpie. Confused

Have a search of ‘holdall’ on Not on the High Street and there’s quite a few options:

sskanky · 14/11/2021 09:16

Ugh I bought DH one of these leather hold all's. It's ludicrously heavy before it's even got anything in and unless you're driving everywhere is a right pain eg on a train

ElephantOfRisk · 14/11/2021 12:57

I hadn't even thought about the weight. It would certainly mostly be for driving places and DH lifts weights and is very very fit - but I want this to be something that lasts the rest of his life so it's a consideration. Thanks for that.
