Why do people wait until Christmas Eve night to do the wrapping?

So many people talk about having to get excited kids to sleep so they can do the wrapping.

Why leave it til then? Confused

I do mine on the 23rd I'm too busy xmas eve

Sammy900 · 12/11/2021 02:08

You have to be Santa and bring all the prezzies in on xmas eve that's a big a job enough!

TasteTheMeatNotTheHeat · 12/11/2021 02:58

I think some people have it as a Christmas Eve tradition.

I personally would hate this, but that's because I get a headache at the thought of leaving almost anything to the past minute. It's simply not in my nature. Other people who are more chilled out than I am probably have a lovely time getting pissed and listening to carols while they do it.

liliainterfrutices · 12/11/2021 03:06

I love taking a glass of Prosecco upstairs with Carols from Kings and wrapping in peace (and have not forgiven Bastarding Boris Johnson for announcing the loss of Erasmus last year, just as I was settling into it. Fucking tool.) Sorry. As you were.’

rrhuth · 12/11/2021 03:08

It is the only thing I do leave late, I am quite an early bird usually.

We have such a nice evening, and always go to bed very excited for the next morning! So I guess it is part of Christmas for us, rather than part of the preparations.

Welcometothejingles · 12/11/2021 03:14

I wrap as I go and number the gifts discreetly in pencil and then make a note of number, gift & person in my pad. It helps me to remember and stops me from opening the gifts to remind myself.

SpeakingFranglais · 12/11/2021 04:48

I do it as I buy because I detest wrapping presents up. I wrap them then put them in the attic cupboards.

notthemum · 12/11/2021 05:12

@HunterHearstHelmsley

I'd rather clean the over than wrap presents. I leave it until the last minute in the hope that some elves will do it for me.

It's such an absolute waste of time. I can't remember how any gift I was received was wrapped.

Mine is always done way before Christmas and I love it. So Hunter, here is my plan. You come and clean my oven and I will wrap all your gifts and even put posh bows on them.
careerchangeperhaps · 12/11/2021 05:13

It's harder to secretly store wrapped gifts without squashing / tearing the paper if you don't have a lot of places to hide gifts.

Liverbird77 · 12/11/2021 05:38

@PieMistee you sound fabulous, as does your family Christmas!
"Confusing" really made me chuckle!

Just what I was going to say. Small house with limited storage.

It’s only the Father Christmas presents though. When DS was young I lived in terror of him finding a load of hidden wrapped presents as I’d be busted.
I wrap other family presents as I go and they get put under the tree.

Gliderx · 12/11/2021 05:52

Christmas tradition. Also it means the men help and the women don't end up doing all the wrapping.

My father was pretty useless at helping around the home when we were growing up but he and my mother always did the wrapping together on Christmas Eve while getting progressively drunker. As a teenager, you could always tell which presents had been wrapped first and which presents were wrapped last and barely covered, with sellotape everywhere Wink. As a young child, I remember being told that Santa's reindeer must have crashed the sleigh at some point.

Trixiefirecracker · 12/11/2021 05:54

Because it’s part of Christmas! Glass of wine snd some late night wrapping!

Coffeeonmytoffee · 12/11/2021 05:54

Because I out things off I don't want to do until the last minute.

Lizlou85 · 12/11/2021 06:07

I dedicate a Saturday afternoon, home alone to wrap. Terry's chocolate orange, a glass of something and a Christmas film in. Its about the only me time I get in the festive season. I love wrapping and don't let hubby help as he doesn't do it to my standards. I may have wrapping OCD.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 12/11/2021 06:17

i do it perhaps 22nd or 23rd just in case i run out of paper, never any more in advance

speakout · 12/11/2021 06:19

I can't wrap too far ahead, I would completely forget what I had bought.
But usually most of is is wrapped a week or so before christmas.

And wrapping is something I love doing!!!
A heavy duty sellotape dispenser is a must.
I put on christmas music, pour a glass of wine and shut myself away. It is a fun afternoon!
I am a super fast wrapper though, I have a small business and wrap 400 items a month for posting.
Christmas wrapping takes no time at all.

readingismycardio · 12/11/2021 06:19

I'm wrapping next week, I still have a few items to arrive + one I'm waiting to be discounted for BF.

TheWomandestroyed · 12/11/2021 06:33

I never wrap, always use gift bags.
Christmas stocking, well sack, for my daughter, she's in her 30's and still wants one, everything just goes in that unwrapped. That's what we did growing up, can't imagine wrapping individual things in a stocking, total waste of time and paper.

DrWankincense · 12/11/2021 06:35

I'm sort of envious of the daredevil spirit of folk who do Christmas Eve wrapping.
I can't do it! Way too stressful.
There are so many other things normally to do during December; parties, School events, visiting friends and family. This year we somehow also have 5 birthday parties between now and the holidays.
So I like to be mostly wrapped (although I do bows and pretty-fying on Christmas Eve) so I can float through the festive period on a waft of Baileys and mulled wine Grin.

I love the calm of christmas eve, house tidy and full of twinkles, maybe a walk or to a small local shop for fresh bread.
Christmas music and candles, expectation in the air for a magical night.
I don't want to exert myself too much on christmas eve.

pictish · 12/11/2021 06:41

Because we can’t be arsed to do it until we have to. We’re always up till 2am on Christmas Eve getting drunk and wrapping gifts. It’s tradition.

bluebellYellow · 12/11/2021 06:43

Maybe when my dc are older I will do this. I quite like the idea.

At the moment I have to buy and wrap everything before the children break up for the holidays.

Sprostongreen21 · 12/11/2021 06:50

I do mine when I have time off in early December. It still feels Christmassy as I watch Christmas films etc while I do it. I used to be a last minute purchase and wrap but now I often work till late Christmas Eve.

A lot of people can’t wrap as it’s stored elsewhere or things need building when children are younger and that’s down Christmas Eve so it becomes habit. Also some people are awaiting pay days to finish their shopping too.

I’ve been very organised and got loads online this year as worried about availability/delivery etc.
