Hi, sorry if this has been done already but I need some ideas for xmas day dessert that isn't Xmas pudding please as no-one is that fussed by it.

What's everyone else having?

I'm going to make pavlova as it's delicious yet light. Which is what works best after a heavy dinner I think.

starrynight21 · 09/11/2021 10:54

I'll be having a pavlova, and also Christmas Pudding ice cream - I discovered the recipe years ago and I love it. Both are light and yummy.

RosesAndHellebores · 09/11/2021 10:56

Pavlova's a good idea, particularly as my Christmas pudding refuses also dislike mousse/torte type textures. My fallback tends to be Yule log or choc/orange/cointreau laced profiteroles. The pavlova idea has inspired me towards a mille feuille with raspberries and blueberries.

ItsSunnyOutside · 09/11/2021 10:56

Growing up in a big family, we always had a selection of 3 different puddings at christmas, all homemade, a big trifle, an apple and blackberry crumble with custard and the last one was a forest gateau, which I've always loved. It's so Christmassy! We carried on the tradition and still do a trio of puds now, including the forest gateau.

Sunshineandflipflops · 09/11/2021 11:03

We'll probably have a trifle as one option. I just asked my 15 yr old and he wants something chocolatey so might make a chocolate oreo cheesecake.

We do Vianetta lol

Sn0tnose · 09/11/2021 11:08

We normally have a few desserts ready to go and see what we fancy on the day. Always a Black Forest gateaux. Having done extensive research on all those available in supermarkets, I can reliably inform you that M&S do the best one.

I also like the lemon and passion fruit buche from Sainsbury’s and we’ve also seen two chocolate tree shaped things from Aldi we’re going to try. If I have a choice of something chocolate and something fruity, I’m happy.

And, of course, the obligatory Viennetta!

Sunshineandflipflops · 09/11/2021 11:17

The lemon and passion fruit sounds nice. I'm not a black forest fan (and I get to choose)!

I'm thinking a fruit trifle and chocolate oreo cheesecake should please most people, young and old.

My lot have requested a yule log and Aldi have one they like the look of. DD wants their profiteroles. And actually they all want the Aldi billionaire's thingy as well. I was thinking of making an apple and cinnamon cheesecake with brandy caramel.

UniBallEye · 09/11/2021 13:41

We have sherry trifle (heavy on the sherry!) and one other - profiteroles / yule log etc and if my parents are with us they bring Christmas pudding and my mum slices it and fries it in butter and serves with custard and cream (heart attack on a plate but they love it!)

I think this year i might buy the trifle and make a black forest gateau, it's dh's favourite and I managed to get some black cherry jam recently which I have squirrelled away in the back of the cupboard.

@ItsSunnyOutside do you have a good recipe you could share? I've never made one before but I like baking

ponkydonkey · 09/11/2021 13:54

I've made delias mincemeat and Apple strudel
It's in the freezer 😀

youngestisapsycho · 09/11/2021 14:11

Always have a chocolate yule log for the kids and something fruity like a cheesecake. Mum insists on a trifle and dad likes Xmas pudding so I buy a really small one. Always get some nice Haagen Dazs ice cream too.

UndertheCedartree · 09/11/2021 14:16

My DC have a chocolate pudding.

minipie · 09/11/2021 14:17

I did a pavlova last year as it was just us due to covid. DC have requested same again!

Sunshineandflipflops · 09/11/2021 15:06

That sounds lovely.

I can't do boozy things as there is a recovering alcoholic in the mix. I'm also not mad on booze in desserts (I prefer it in a glass)!

We have trifle (a proper 1970s monstrosity) and a chocolate biscuit pudding covered in maltesers with white chocolate poured on top.

thelegohooverer · 09/11/2021 15:16

Question for those who have pavlova- what fruit do you use? I don’t like the taste of berries in winter when they’re not in season. Is there a better alternative?

SirenSays · 09/11/2021 15:22

We're doing profiteroles, a yule log and individual caramel lava cakes with cinnamon ice cream.

minipie · 09/11/2021 15:24

We use halved grapes lego. Passion fruit is lovely too but my DC1 isn’t keen.

WishICouldButIDontWantTo · 09/11/2021 15:33

Only DH and I like Xmas pudding so have it ourselves on Xmas eve or boxing day.
My MIL makes a delicious trifle every year. Always goes down well!

DustyMaiden · 09/11/2021 15:36

Aldi frozen Yule log is surprisingly good. Very light.

Tulipomania · 09/11/2021 15:39

usually do a gluten free chocolate Yule log, as we have a coeliac in the family.

Jumpingintochristmas · 09/11/2021 15:40

We are having Trifle, Paddington pudding (Jamie Oliver pannetonne tart) and Christmas pudding

Leftbutcameback · 09/11/2021 15:41

Bread and butter pudding made with brioche and chocolate chips. And some Baileys in the custard.

Leftbutcameback · 09/11/2021 15:42

Apple strudel sounds like a great idea as well!
