Hi, sorry if this has been done already but I need some ideas for xmas day dessert that isn't Xmas pudding please as no-one is that fussed by it.

What's everyone else having?

we've decided on lemon mirage pie

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 09/11/2021 20:52

Lemon mirage Xmas Smile sounds...dreamy Xmas Wink

madmumofteens · 09/11/2021 20:57

I usually make a key lime pie and use up the egg whites in a pavlova x

Luredbyapomegranate · 09/11/2021 21:15

c’mas pudding ice cream is surprisingly nice..

NatriumChloride · 09/11/2021 21:33

What a great thread! This year there are going to be three desserts - creme brûlée, sticky ginger cake, and a chocolate Yule log! All homemade!

Comedia · 09/11/2021 21:34

We have two chocolatey options this year. An adult chocolate and ginger tart from Cook and a chocolate fudgey pudding my kids adore from sainsburys that you keep in freezer and cook in microwave. Plus ice cream/cream and mince pies. Simple!

DiamondBright · 09/11/2021 21:35

I've had a special request for pumpkin pie.

Leftbutcameback · 09/11/2021 21:41

I had some of the Xmas pudding ice cream from Waitrose a few years ago, and it was lovely

Newforestdonkey · 09/11/2021 21:44

Nigella Yule log recipe is really easy!!

bananaboats · 09/11/2021 21:53

I usually due an apple strudel but think I'm going to cranachan this year

BeefSupreme · 10/11/2021 00:08

@thelegohooverer

Question for those who have pavlova- what fruit do you use? I don’t like the taste of berries in winter when they’re not in season. Is there a better alternative?
@thelegohooverer I make 2 smaller meringues in sandwich tins, and fill and top them with cream whipped with melted chocolate like the lightest fluffiest marshmallowy cake. It's my signature dessert, Christmas and DH's birthday.

Usually we have the chocolate pavlova, tiramisu, fruit salad and ice cream (vanilla ice cream with smashed up crunchies and a carton of added cream!)

My sister is a MNer, she's going to know me just from that list! 😂

timeisnotaline · 10/11/2021 02:12

I am doing a strawberry Charlotte for one of the desserts. There will be a few other options though!

maldivemoment · 10/11/2021 03:34

I usually do this

It’s delicious, looks impressive & v easy.

Hi @UniBallEye

www.nigella.com/recipes/guests/eric-lanlards-proper-black-forest-gateau

Nigellas recipe is almost identical to my mums one..the only difference is my mum uses morello cherries in syrup from a jar, not tinned. [I don't think tinned ones taste as nice] and my mum uses more dark chocolate,
170 g about 5 teaspoons of raspberry jam!

I alsways put lots of real cherries piled up on top of the cake. Its' abit of a showstopper and so delicious, my mouth is watering now, I can't wait to make it!
Happy baking!

ItsSunnyOutside · 10/11/2021 10:46

Oops, the recipe is actually Eric Lanlards but its on Nigellas website

thelegohooverer · 10/11/2021 10:54

@YerWanIsGettinNotions oh wow! That sounds lush.

Passion fruit pulp is the best topping for pavlova, it has a strong flavour and pronounced acidity that offsets the sweetness of the meringue. Unfortunately it doesn't look that decorative. An alternative which is also good for flavour and looks quite festive is to sprinkle it liberally with pomegranate seeds.
SiobhanSharpe · 10/11/2021 11:13

I've made Nigel Slater's Christmas Crumble once or twice, it's appropriately Christmassy but not exactly light. (Although lighter than the traditional Christmas pudding).
The base Is sliced apples and bananas mixed with a couple of tablespoons of mincemeat (alcohol free if you like) and a little cinnamon, while the crumble topping contains unskinned almonds, fairly finely chopped.
Very easy to make, it can be prepared the day before and just sit in the fridge until you want to bake it.
I was unsure about the bananas but they work surprisingly well.
It goes with custard, cream or ice-cream.

SiobhanSharpe · 10/11/2021 11:17

This year I'm doing Basque Burnt cheesecake which is quite light and fluffy (for a cheesecake 😉) served with home-grown morello cherries poached in their own juices.

SiobhanSharpe · 10/11/2021 11:25

@MintyCedric

Toffee apple crumble (really easy, peeled and chopped granny smiths, chuck in a jar of dulce du lecherous and topped with crumble with added oats, flaked almonds an cinnamon)

Something chocolate orangey

Mince pie shortbread as a traditional option

I like the sound of dulce de lecherous -- does Ann Summers stock it? (and does it work?)
AnnPerkins · 10/11/2021 11:48

There are only 3 of us but I like to serve a selection and live on the leftovers. This year I'm thinking of doing Nigella's clementine cake served with brandy cream, a gluten free sherry trifle and maybe Nigella's meringue gelato ice cream served with chocolate sauce.

I also have a jar of cherries in kirsch and would love to have them in a black forest gateau, cheesecake or trifle but I'm the only one that likes them. Perhaps I could make something and just put the cherries in one side...

@Positivelypatient

Chocolate Banoffi Pie is demanded by the kids. I like Lemon Fridge Cake myself.
These both sound gorgeous!
Artesia · 10/11/2021 12:07

I do baked Alaska of some sort. One year a banana cake base, chocolate and hazelnut ice cream and hot chocolate sauce to pour over the top. Not light, but impressive, and you can decorate it with little penguins/polar bears etc just before serving so it looks like a snowy glacier. The kids love it, and never fail to be amazed by the "hot dessert/frozen ice cream" bit!

GoingForAWalk · 10/11/2021 12:43

My DM always makes trifle as she hates Christmas pudding.

I started to bring a Christmas pudding for anyone who wants some which is everyone other that DM Grin

None of us like Christmas cake at all although we love stollen. I've just bought one from Waitrose actually.
