My living room is pink and grey but I don't want a pink/grey Christmas theme

I can't redecorate.

Would tradional red/green tree and decorations (cushions etc) look weird?

Or any other suggestions for festive colour schemes?

@Anycolourwilldo

Christ. I don't know anyone in real like who would do this. What a waste of money.
Read the OPs posts, she got some used decs on FB marketplace but wants to try something different, presumably getting some more used decs again in a different colour scheme. She is not the bad guy here.

I reckon OP that you're better off just finding decorations you like in that case, and not worrying about a colour scheme.

What sort of tree decorations would you have in your ideal house?

I know I like homemade and natural decorations: I've made some lovely origami baubles like this:

www.ajourneybespoke.com/journey/home-design/diy-paper-diamonds?format=amp using a stack of Christmas origami paper from the work. I also love paper chains, make myself some felt decorations and stuff them so they're not flat like this: images.app.goo.gl/LVE5hjSvc9WEQ3HN8

Mine are all sorts of colours, and apart from that I just have various normal round glass baubles, again in plenty of colours. So not really themed by colour, but by using mainly a few showers of decorations, it brings the tree together.

I like paper chains as well because they hide all my wonky walls. I also do a full wall covered in cut out paper snowflakes: you can cut paper into squares then fold into twelths and that gives a quite realistic appearance because they then have six fold symmetry. I also really like origami star wreaths: www.makeandtakes.com/origami-starburst-wreath

You can tell I'm a paper crafter at heart!

Obviously none of this may be to your taste and that would be very reasonable, but I think it was mainly to illustrate that you can have things which go without them matching and so if you have particular textures or something you like you could use those as a connecting theme through the decorations without worrying about the room colour.

Daisy62 · 08/11/2021 21:30

I love previous poster's paper decs ideas. I've also seen people wrap their baubles in silky fabric, or sparkly paper. Maybe something like that could work.

SpookyPumpkinPants · 08/11/2021 21:32

@VsgKitt. Are you renting (or using someone's house for a while?). If you're renting, when will you be able to redecorate?

It would be horrible being stuck with coloured decor you don't like!

My walls are 'plaster pink' (no, not farrow & ball!, actually plaster!!🤣). My Christmas Decorations are 'traditional' & gathered over the years, traditional filiment lights on the tree! I like it, I love unpacking them each year & all the memories that come with them!!

I personally don't 'do' themed! But if I wanted to & with grey & pink decor, I'd go with white & clear glass. Or silver.

I hope you like whatever you decide on!

Snow capped tree I love it no decorations on it a white little one e for the kitchen window with yellow tinsel on it. Yes odd but I don’t care.

I think if you want a traditional colour scheme, go for it. I have a similar colour scheme to you in my living room (here when I moved in so also not my taste), and I do a traditional tree with lots of red and gold and glass etc. I think it looks great, and actually never thought about it matching the walls etc, too busy looking at my lovely tree Grin

Minniem2020 · 08/11/2021 21:41

I've recently changed my living room from pink&grey to navy&grey. I'm not changing the Xmas tree though so that's going to have to stay with the pink theme. It is more blush pink and rose gold though which does seem xmassy to me. Can you add more gold and rose gold to yours to make it more xmassy?

Babyvenusplant · 08/11/2021 21:42

White and silver would look nice

EmeraldShamrock · 08/11/2021 21:46

Ignore OP.
It doesn't cost much to colour coordinate, lots of good ideas on here.
Keep your eyes open on the free cycle pages you might get some accessories that'll change a room.
I saw 90x90 curtains today with matching cushion covers.
Enjoy your new2you decorations.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/11/2021 21:49

Don't play Christmas songs but get a copy of this...

... to bring it all together.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/11/2021 21:49

I also do a full wall covered in cut out paper snowflakes: you can cut paper into squares then fold into twelths and that gives a quite realistic appearance because they then have six fold symmetry.

We cover the windows in paper snowflakes. Dead cheap using standard white printer paper, you could cover with glitter if you were feeling fancy.

If you fancy homemade decorations then if you've got kids of the right age we do Hama bead decorations using star and circle boards. The other classic is the pom pom robin.
3D paper snowflakes or paperbag snowflakes are very effective and cheap to make and very trendy. Last year the DC made origami decorations, there are loads of tutorials online to follow. I feel quite Christmassy now thinking about decorations!

idontlikealdi · 08/11/2021 21:51

Our tree is a vomit of random colour since we had kids. Everywhere we go they get to choose a reminder decoration, nothing matches. We switched the lights from white to coloured to keep up with it and I bloody love it.

ChannelJackieWeaver · 08/11/2021 21:52

Silver and teal green might work or all red?

Thatsplentyjack · 08/11/2021 21:54

Mine is silver, light gold (as in not the harsh bright yellow gold baubles you get) loads of little special decorations that the kids and I have bought over the years and wood. Hoes with everything .

Thatsplentyjack · 08/11/2021 21:54

Goes with everything!!

Tomatalillo · 08/11/2021 21:54

Charity shops perform this function quite well

But imagine all the abundant Christmas gorgeousness all in one place!

I like the idea of gold and teal

Thatsplentyjack · 08/11/2021 22:11

God you're getting a really hard time for wanting tk biy a few new Christmas tree decorations OP. I wouldn't what all the second hand buyers will do when they have convinced everyone to stop buying anything new and go to the charity shop.

Tomatalillo · 08/11/2021 22:32

It’s also fairly easy to make a few bits and pieces so wanting a change isn’t all bad. We have some green and some gold foil saved from some chocolates we were given last year. We'll make some new baubles or stars from these. We just add 1 or 2 things each year.

Lanterns can be made from tins with holes punched for lights. Or glass jars with snowflakes stuck to them.

Wooden and even plastic decorations can be painted or tweaked with very little paint.

We do window snowflakes too! But from kitchen towel so they have the dotty imprints.

I would love to hear that someone has started up a Christmas ‘bring and buy’, not likely I’ll be able to manage it. Hope someone can 😀😀😀🎄

Howmanysleepsnow · 08/11/2021 23:17

What about jewel colours (deep purple, deep pink, teal, navy, gold)?
Or mixed metallics: silver, bronze, gold, copper, rose gold plus some clear glass?

NalPolishRemover · 09/11/2021 00:19

We've collected decorations over the 20 years we've been together but somehow they're all quite traditional & old fashioned in style & mainly red, white, gold & bottle green. I absolutely adore our decorations. We've collected them on our travels & from all sorts of places & it makes me v happy to take them out each year.

I do know someone who decorates her sitting room approx every 18mths or so & she then changes her entire Xmas decorations to match.

She's had hot pink baubles on a white tree
Black & white theme
Teal & rose gold
And last year she had the strangest one- a v weird upside down tree hanging from the ceiling! I've never seem one like it
I don't know what she does with all the discarded decorations though.
She pastes FB with pictures each year & seems to get lots of attention from her friends about her 'theme'

I could never do it

Sn0tnose · 09/11/2021 10:41

@ikeepseeingit

I'm of the opinion that traditional always looks great, and anything non-traditional will look good in the right setting. Are you after traditional red-green and gold/silver, or a new colour pallet that will warm up your room but not be as old fashioned? Are we matching to a blush pink or a very deep pink? Dark grey or light?

If you can send pictures of a room with a similar colour pallet that would help us too!

I completely agree with this. A traditional tree will look beautiful no matter where you put it. There’s a post on the front page of this topic where someone has put their tree up and it really is incredibly pretty. Nobody is going to be looking at your walls with a tree like that.

If you definitely want co-ordinated though, I’d go for either lots of golds, or silvers, whites and glass. Obviously, gold is everywhere, as is silver, but Asda are currently doing packs of white baubles which are really pretty and if glass is out of your price range, B&M or Home Bargains (whichever one has the blue and orange logo) do clear plastic baubles filled with tiny coloured seed beads. I’ve got glass baubles as I engrave them and, side by side, you can’t really tell the difference. Plus the top comes off the baubles really easily if you wanted to have them empty or change the colour. Don’t bin the beads if you empty them; crafters will take them off your hands.

Plus, with the plastic baubles, if you want a different colour next year, you can pour some watered down pva glue in there, whatever colour glitter you fancy, wait for it to dry, then you have glitter baubles that don’t shed glitter everywhere, with colours you’d never find in the shops.
