My living room is pink and grey but I don't want a pink/grey Christmas theme

I can't redecorate.

Would tradional red/green tree and decorations (cushions etc) look weird?

Or any other suggestions for festive colour schemes?

Definitely whites and silvers, go for a sparkly, snowy alpine look

Sewaccidentprone · 08/11/2021 20:51

I go for a ‘theme’ every year, but I’ve decorations going back decades, so couldn’t possibly get everything out every year.

Last one I did ‘natural’, so lots of greenery, wood, paper, glass etc, another year stars and snowflakes.

My favorite ever though was disco animal - so loads of disco and glitter balls and all my animal, bird decorations etc.

Our living room is currently ochre, white and wood. So I’m thinking maybe gold and something else. Need to put my thinking cap on.

Who says the Op has a lifetime of Christmas baubles or memories?

I have an, er, eclectic mix of styles in my living room so warm white or multi colour look equally Christmassy.
I can see pink and grey might look a little off with full on traditional decks.
I think warm white lights everywhere and gold. Or silver and snow and rose gold.

No one. But she obviously has decorations from last year, as she said so upthread.

GreyhoundG1rl · 08/11/2021 20:53

That looks like a black & white / sepia photograph...

Sewaccidentprone · 08/11/2021 20:55

Depends on what decorations you already have and if you actually care about ‘matchy matchy’

Do maybe silver, gold and blue, or pastels?

tilder · 08/11/2021 20:55

maybe a small policeman and an arkela.

As in a scout leader Christmas decoration? Please tell me that was a typo.

To be honest, the idea of redecorating or matching a tree to existing decor is slightly surreal in itself. Each to their own.

If you do theme each year, please don't chuck the decorations each year. At least keep them and reuse in a different theme another year.

I have red christmas cushion covers that go on my blush cushions. 🎅

dream75 · 08/11/2021 20:57

Have a look on YouTube at Love Meg. She has a pink and navy living room and made a few little changes to suit her christmas colour scheme. It might give you a few ideas.

Vickles20 · 08/11/2021 20:59

Burgundy and moss green would work.

Without knowing if your pink and grey scheme is dark or light, I would prob go with a dark green and some metallic. Xo

Pbbananabagel · 08/11/2021 21:00

Try a black tree? Then use looooads of gold and silver and aqua blue mixed in with your pink. It won’t actually look black when all the decs are on, just a nice dark background that’ll make your decorations feel more festive.

GreyhoundG1rl · 08/11/2021 21:01

A black tree Confused

VsgKitt · 08/11/2021 21:06

My house is completely non matchy. In fact it's an absolute shit hole so I just thought I would cheer myself up with new decorations in a more Christmassy theme as I tried the matchy thing last year (bundle of used Dec's from FB if you need to know) and didn't like it.

Pink and grey isn't my thing but I'm not allowed to decorate. :(

Didn't expect all the over dramatic pearl clutching, but it is mumsnet.

I have always wanted to organise a ‘bring and buy’ sale/swap for Christmas decorations. Saves waste and be able to have things that are new (to you) and exciting.

Charity shops perform this function quite well Wink

Madness, just use what you've got already.

JaninaDuszejko · 08/11/2021 21:12

What do you have at the moment? When we started having a tree over 20 years ago we made a decision about the colour scheme at that point, we started with some silver, gold and a duck egg blue (blue being my favourite colour and surprisingly easy to get decorations in circa 2000) decorations. Over the years we have added many different decorations sticking more or less to that colour scheme and the DC make one each year as well (of every colour going). We now have two trees, the big colourful one in the playroom with all the kids decorations and various silver, gold and blue decorations and the small tasteful tree in the sitting room with the most expensive and beautiful decorations that is still in my original colour scheme.

Anyway OP, if you think the red and gold won't go with the pink and grey room decoration then I'd keep the red baubles in storage, but still use the pink and gold ones, and then add silver baubles plus any colours you think will go. Green, white (think origami stars or snowflakes) or teal will look lovely in a pink and grey room. But if you stick to a base of gold and silver then you'll be fine for the future.

That's such a great idea!

It’s not pearl clutching. Each to their own. I just didn’t know people did this outside of ‘Ideal Homes’ magazine. I’m stingy and there’s absolutely no way I’d buy a whole trees worth of new decorations.

Ideal homes 😂 I live in a mould infested council house. This tickled me.

We have nothing but glass on our main tree and it looks amazing,

ikeepseeingit · 08/11/2021 21:17

I'm of the opinion that traditional always looks great, and anything non-traditional will look good in the right setting. Are you after traditional red-green and gold/silver, or a new colour pallet that will warm up your room but not be as old fashioned? Are we matching to a blush pink or a very deep pink? Dark grey or light?

If you can send pictures of a room with a similar colour pallet that would help us too!

IcedCoffeeAlways · 08/11/2021 21:21

@RainCloude

Where would one find navy Christmas tree decorations though? Sounds a bit odd
@RainCloude Usually I would have agreed with this but the year before last I remember being in a shop (can’t for the life of me remember which one!) and seeing a whole navy and gold Christmas set up - tree/set dinner table etc and it looked beautiful! Navy isn’t really a colour I’d have thought of but it really looked lovely!
Anycolourwilldo · 08/11/2021 21:23

Christ. I don't know anyone in real like who would do this.
What a waste of money.
