What do your 17/18 yo girls want this year?

Mine just asks for cash. But due to being abroad and a distinct lack of surviving family members I do like to have some things under the tree. I feel very uninspired this year. Last year there was an Oodie and a HP sprocket and some Sushi stuff. She particularly like the Rough Guide to Europe on a Shoestring as they are plotting interrailing next year. This year I have no ideas at all.

Mines has quite specific interest so a kpop album, some imported t shirts from Japan and some switch games. She also loves the traditions of things we have always done, so santa akways brings new pyjamas, slippers, socks and a housecoat, and a chocolate reindeer.

My oldest is more into make up anything like that any good?

Geamhradh · 02/11/2021 19:56

Oooh, you've given me an idea! Mine has applied for the free EU rail tickets so the book would be fab!
Right, mine is just turned 18 and I'm in Italy which is boring as F at Christmas so I go way over the top. We're also short on relatives on my side and on his side they're useless at Christmas.
Mine will get a main present (possibly a proper Fit Bit as she's had a succession of xiaomi ones which shes really loved, but they don't last long)
Under the tree:
Face masks (skincare as opposed to Covid!)
Books on feminism and politics. (She's applying to do politics at uni)
Vouchers from my Quidco points for places like Prezzo and Starbucks
Pen drive
Coffee tasting pack from Wgittards- she loved this last year
Socks, pants, bras
Gym stuff (ordered on Sunday from Sports Direct at 75% off).
Got Groupon voucher for photo printing and will print her her 18th birthday photos from October (been editing them this afternoon)
Candles
Pistachio chocolate
Morphe palette (50% off at the mo)
A fancy bauble (my Mum had this tradition with me and I've carried it on for DD)
A jigsaw (amazing how relaxing it can be)

Just loads of little bits and bobs really so she's got lots to open. My dad gives her money but I'm the only one who buys for her really apart from that.

HoxtonBonnet · 02/11/2021 19:56

Dd wants a record player. Will get some records to go with it.

Geamhradh · 02/11/2021 19:57

RJ has also just reminded me Grin I also get LOTS of inspiration from the Bargains thread!

Deadringer · 02/11/2021 20:01

My dd wants trainers and a heated throw. I am also getting her some earbuds, crystals, roller skates (trendy retro boot ones), and a thingy that wards off spiders.

ANameChangeAgain · 02/11/2021 20:02

Mine's 16 so a little younger, but going on 20! I'm looking at getting her a Supercar Driving experience day. I've got her a some Hotel Chocolat liqueur miniatures (she doesn't drink as a rule, only as a treat).

Oooh what's the thing that wards off spiders? My dd would love that!
Geamhradh · 02/11/2021 20:35

So would mine! (Spider thingy)
Heated throw went down really well last year.

Deadringer · 02/11/2021 20:36

Its one of those plug in things for rodents, supposed to work for spiders too. Dd is terrified of them.

foxgoosefinch · 02/11/2021 20:55

When I was 18 I remember I liked:

  • magazine subscriptions to eg Vogue;
  • jewellery (mainly bracelets/earrings - you could try Lisa Angel and Oliver Bonas which I buy from for myself today!);
  • fairy lights/candles/plants for room;
  • music;
  • books;
  • nice bits of makeup, eg glow/highlighters/cheek stain from Benefit, or Chanel nail varnish, which I otherwise couldn’t afford;
  • perfume;
  • framed photos / pictures;
  • i don’t think I liked being bought clothes, but vouchers were always good.

I doubt things have moved on so far for 18yo girls that the above list wouldn’t still throw up some hits 😂

Thanks will have a google! My dd is terrified of them too whereas I like them!! She can take it to uni with her!
Geamhradh · 03/11/2021 06:30

Oh yes, mag subscriptions, always on super offer too, at least for the first few months. Got DD the Economist and New Statesman (don't ask Grin) and got 12 weeks for something ridiculous like £4.
Agree with the wonderful Lisa Angel site as well- though sadly for me they aren't covering customs duties but have said they will refund if you are charged. ,(am in EU)

This thread is already great and I've got more ideas from it so thanks for starting it @MissAmbrosia Brew

Lovemusic33 · 03/11/2021 07:27

My dd wants cash but I don’t like giving her cash as I like to find things for her to open. She’s a hoarder of money so doesn’t really need cash. So far I have got her a oodie, a silly board game and she has mentioned a Amazon fire stick. I’m tempted to book her a couple driving lessons but I’m struggling to find a instructor that teaches in a auto (dd has some disabilities). Her birthday is a few weeks after Christmas and she’s hopefully getting a VIP experience with red pandas at our local zoo.

GoodnightGrandma · 03/11/2021 07:33

My DD loves her Oodie, that was a win.
And she wears her Tiffany necklaces lots, and really looks after them. She ‘s got a couple of the silver ones that are about £125.

MissAmbrosia · 03/11/2021 15:10

Some great ideas - thank you! What's the latest IN make-up? She's not a huge wearer of jewelry but does like earrings.

My dd is getting:

Tickets for ABBA in London next year
A teddy cuddle cushion from Dunelm - basically a big back rest with arms to help her be more comfy when studying in bed!
An iced coffee maker (she's away at uni)
Books
Skincare/toiletries
Alcohol minis
Stationery for uni

Still to get

Pjs
Fluffy socks
Supermarket/vista/Wetherspoons vouchers
Dolmio sauces (her fave)
Zebra highlighters

Geamhradh could you tell me more about the free eu rail tickets - have an 18 year old- thank you
MissAmbrosia · 03/11/2021 19:39

europa.eu/youth/discovereu_en I did read somewhere it was opened up to UK teenagers. Will try to find.

I think the cut off was a few weeks ago for the Discover EU, unfortunately.
Not sure if that was the first pool of tickets and there may be more. I found it totally by chance googling other European Union wotsits for DD and quickly got her to apply.
