Ive bought the wrong sodding monster truck

I was feeling so smug! I thought I’d finished presents for ds whose 5. I went to Smyths yesterday and bought what I thought he’d been asking for, a rather large remote control monster truck. Grave Digger to be precise! I hated it on sight. It’s bloody massive and I don’t know where it will go but I thought ‘think of his little face when he sees it on Christmas morning’.
Well imagine my disappointment when he told me this morning (while watching monster trucks on YouTube, his favourite past time Hmm) that it was in fact the smaller remote control one he wants. I don’t think he’s aware the bigger one exists and if he is aware I don’t think he understands the scale of it!
What do I do..? Do I return it and buy the smaller, cheaper and less offensive one he has asked for? All the while panicking that if he becomes aware of the other one he may well change his mind on Christmas Eve for maximum dramatics.
Or do I stick with the one I’ve bought hoping he’s not disappointed? He does have a January birthday so if he still wants it after Christmas I can buy it then.

I’d change it - there’s nothing more disappointing as a child to not get the exact toy you albeit something similar and bigger in this case. As you say if he then asks for it at a later date it’s an idea for his birthday.

Go get your money back OP!
We had two of the very large grave digger remote controls for our DSs last Christmas, not only are they a total pain in the arse to store as they are so bloody big, they both had issues with the battery weeks after having them.
When we returned for a refund the guy at the shop said they’d had loads returned for the same reason. (Kids much preferred the smaller ones)

He's 5 he'll probably have changed his mind by Christmas.

Mintyt · 31/10/2021 08:26

Swap it for the one he wants.

mnahmnah · 31/10/2021 08:28

Change it and keep reminding him of the one he’s asking for until Christmas. Has he written a Christmas letter to Santa yet? Once committed on there, it’s done!

I’ve always remembered the Christmas I got the wrong Barbie…

Change it!

littlefireseverywhere · 31/10/2021 08:33

Change it!

00100001 · 31/10/2021 08:36

Definitely swap it over :) this is your "reward" for planning early! Just imagine if you been out on the 23rd and had discovered it was the wrong one on the 24th!

GiltEdges · 31/10/2021 08:37

Could you buy the other one and keep the one you've already bought? Give him the smaller one he's asked for at Christmas and the bigger one for his birthday?

RitaTheBeater · 31/10/2021 08:39

Of course you take it back. If it was December 22nd I could see the dilemma but it’s October.

Sunfl0wer20 · 31/10/2021 09:46

Going against everyone else’s advice a little here but I would take him to the toy shop and see if he notices it. We usually take ours for a look around to see if there is anything they would like to add to their lists.

As you mentioned you he may not even know it exists.

SoupDragon · 31/10/2021 09:47

He wants the smaller, cheaper one... change it!

PivotPivotPivottt · 31/10/2021 11:13

I agree with sunflower about taking him into the shop and seeing if he notices. Ot show him a video of the one you bought (smyths usually have demo videos) and say something casual along the lines of "wow look at the size of that monster truck". I do this with my children all the time and can always gauge a reaction. I've been doing it again this year and have ruled out some stuff that they've made clear they weren't bothered about but I was convinced they would love. They both wanted squishmallows so I ordered the ones I thought they would both loved and it turns out they both hate the ones I chose for them and love the ones I got for the otherGrin

I didn’t expect a thread about monster trucks to get more than two replies! So thank you everyone Grin

I tried the trick of showing him a video of the one I bought and it confirmed he wants the other one. He was very polite about it but said the other one can do ‘doughnuts’ so it’s apparently cooler... I changed it this morning. I really don’t want Malibu Barbie levels of dramatics on Christmas morning!
