I never know how to spell this word
I don't want any plastic shite
But still want joy for the kids

OP posts:
SickAndTiredAgain · 30/10/2021 07:41

How old are they?

Brigittebidet · 30/10/2021 07:50

Books, toiletries, edibles, underwear and one toy. Depending on age - things like gum shields, water bottles etc are useful too. FC always brings pants in our house. It’s a standing joke.

DrFoxtrot · 30/10/2021 07:53

We call it tat or bin fodder Grin. You could consider books, small wooden toys, a cracker without a plastic toy, food items. Maybe Christmas Eve box style things in a stocking. We don't do Christmas Eve boxes in our house so would be easier for us to do.

eurochick · 30/10/2021 07:54

It's tat...

Magazines, colouring pencils, stickers

Tagcurious · 30/10/2021 07:54

Book, socks, chocolate, stationery

WakeUpLockie · 30/10/2021 07:56

A clementine! Choc coins. Those sainsburys Disney cards if they’re collecting them/football cards?

WeatherwaxLives · 30/10/2021 07:56

Do you mean tat? Like pointless rubbish?

Anyway! Depends how old they are.

Fancy pens / pencils
Mini toiletries
Chocolate!
Make up
Wooden toys - figures for little ones or brain teaser puzzles for teens
Small sum gift card for iTunes
Hair acessories
Fuzzy Socks

Rainbowqueeen · 30/10/2021 07:56

Cupcake mix or cake mix that you can do together
Socks
Those washers that start off small and expand when you put them in water
Lip gloss/ bubble bath

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/10/2021 07:57

Tat?

Wooden pencils and colouring books
Cartoon socks/pants
T shirt
Bubble bath, shower gel, bath bombs
Chocolate spread
Choc orange, Toblerone
Books

I try and go for better versions of what they’d need anyway (pants, socks, toiletries) or perishables.

autumnboys · 30/10/2021 07:57

Stockings are very low key in our house and include things like a pair of Christmas socks, a new film, chocolate, shampoo & shower gel.

twilightcafe · 30/10/2021 07:57

Old tut in my house!
No idea how to spell it. All I know is that it's an old East London/Jewish expression of worthless junk.

Gardeningtipsneeded · 30/10/2021 08:03

It’s tut, rhymes with put but I agree the spelling is tricky. See also tut shops, e.g Flying Tiger
Board games
Annuals for sports teams, favourite mags etc
magazine sub
New water bottle/lunch box
LED bedroom lights
LUcky charms or similar cereal
Bath bombs
Playdoh
Colouring pens/pencils
Stickers
Tattoos
Art supplies

MintJulia · 30/10/2021 08:03

My ds 13 always wants more paints, coloured pens etc. Books, art pads.

A wired bike computer (£15), bike lights, multi-photo frame filled with the year's action shots. Welly socks for snowy days, new swim goggles.

I'm stuck for his main present though .

Moomarre · 30/10/2021 08:16

It’s all about the stockings in our house! But very little tat. Lots of edibles, character bubble bath, playmobil/happyland/Lego characters to add to existing sets (usually second hand), small toys like dolls or cars, stickers, pens, a book. Teen dd gets face masks, earrings, make up… teen ds mostly gets food. I try really hard to make it stuff they’ll actually appreciate.
The tat elements are a pack of fun snaps and a polystyrene glider. And this year a poppit keyring but they’ll put those on their bags.

WholeClassKeptIn · 30/10/2021 08:21

I've always known it as tat. I really didn't know there was a tut (pp) as well!

WholeClassKeptIn · 30/10/2021 08:25

Ive found toot with a bit of googling meaning rubbish.

I'm now wondering whether tat/toot/ tut have the same meaning and are regional variations or if the meaning has changed.

Tat has the connotation of "cheap and nasty" . I haven't ever head or read of the other 2.

Ooh and a choc santa!

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 30/10/2021 08:43

I have conditioned my poor kids to be excited at unwrapping new pants and socks in their stockings, to the point that even though they're now teens they demand that Santa still brings them.

Also hair bobbles, mini perfumes, book token, actual book.

ShowOfHands · 30/10/2021 08:45

I say tut and tat and mean slightly different things but both broadly mean nonsense, throwaway stuff. Tut I use to refer to abstract concepts too such as "what a load of old tut he was speaking".

Anyway, our stockings contain all sorts of stuff including in the past edibles, art supplies, a magazine or book, socks, flannels, toothbrushes, paper aeroplane kits, hair stuff, toiletries, craft supplies, hand warmers, gloves, jewellery, stationery, small card games.

Callmecordelia · 30/10/2021 08:49

When I was growing up we always had a tube of pringles in our stockings. Carried that on with my own children.

SkankingMopoke · 30/10/2021 08:49

I'd call/spell it tut too (to rhyme with 'put').

We don't put plastic tut in the stockings. Father Christmas brings the stockings and we give the tree presents in our family. As a result, stockings are usually filled with all the things DH and I "don't buy them": blind bags of Lego or Playmobil, lip balm, a miniature perfume, sweets, a nail varnish, gel pens, fancy hair bands/clips etc. It's mostly consumable stuff which will often last them until next Christmas (apart from the sweets and chocs, obviously! Those rarely hang around long enough to see boxing day).

Hesma · 30/10/2021 08:49

Bubble bath or bath bombs, note pads and pencils, colouring pens, small soft toys, fluffy socks, malteasers ( tradition in our family), lip gloss, puzzle books.
