I never know how to spell this word
I don't want any plastic shite
But still want joy for the kids

Everyone I know says toot - we are east of London, sort of place where cockneys move up and out to so would make sense it being of east London origin. I think it's a broader word than tat though. I'd also refer to someone as "talking toot" when they are spouting nonsense. I'm not sure tat can be used in the same way?

But in answer to the question - socks, Matey, sweets, sweets and more sweets, satsuma, small card game.

HappySantasaurus · 30/10/2021 08:56

This year our 3 year old will have:

Small Teddy
Story book
Magic paint pad
Colour change bubble bath
Chocolate coins
Find Minnie book
Knickers
Socks
Grow your own mini kit

batmanladybird · 30/10/2021 10:52

@twilightcafe

Old tut in my house! No idea how to spell it. All I know is that it's an old East London/Jewish expression of worthless junk.
Yes. Alan Sugar talks about it in the apprentice. But yes. Also tat

Tut/toot very common in my part of the world. Tat is slightly different. Tut can be tat but not all tut is tat Grin

AnotherMansCause · 30/10/2021 11:05

Magazine rolled up
A dvd may fit?
Likewise a book
Lego if they're into that
A handheld fan - battery run or old fashioned type
Hair accessories for your DD
Nice toiletries
Slipper socks, the cute cosy fluffy type

TheChosenTwo · 30/10/2021 11:14

Our stockings are actually sacks, made a rod for my own back there, and contain no wasteful tat that will be looked at and then binned.
Dc are 17,16 and 10.
They will each have a couple of things from lush, a hotel chocolate set of penguins or whatever shapes they have and a tiddly pot of something, Terry’s chocolate Orange, satsuma, bag of coins, gaming or Starbucks gift card, a cath kidston glass, there are other things that they all get the same (or the same theme) of.
Then individually things that are tailored to them, things like a jigsaw puzzle, Lego blockheadz, funko pop (those weird head things?), pyjamas, jazzy socks (last year one had marvel, one had Grinch and one had super Mario), book, rituals Reed diffusers, jewellery, magic 8 ball (used daily!), blue tak Confused (always requested by the middle one), yoda Tupperware, hello Kitty Tupperware, erm, basically a combination of things they ask Father Christmas for and then the rest just things I put in as I know they’ll like. But things that will get used, nicer versions of every day things in some cases. The older 2 love the rituals reed diffusers, they only get one at Christmas, the rest of the year it’s just whatever is on offer at Amazon!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/10/2021 11:15

Torches
Slipper socks
Weird snacks they like (I've put cheese and biltong in before)
Cans of cocktails for adults, soft drinks for kids

Morgantowers · 30/10/2021 11:20

You also need to consider plastic holders. A lip balm in a plastic tube, a fun pen that is plastic, a book with a plastic cover, hair baubles that are plastic, shower gels in plastic bottles, perfumes in plastic bottles, plastic pencil cases, kids beakers are plastic that ultimately after a year go to landfill.

It’s the same when trying to avoid palm oil you have to read labels and then work out if vegetable oil contains palm oil or a derivative of.

mam0918 · 30/10/2021 11:36

To be honest, I never understand the definition of tat on these forums but the word gets thrown around so much... most of the stuff listed on this thread is kind of tat in my view but I don't have a problem with tat lol.

To me, stockings are for little novelty tat things.

My kids are each getting Gelli Baff, Stickers, Bath Bomb, Bath Pens, Card game, Push down/pop up toy thing, and lots of sweets (including chocolate coins of course)

Then individually:
Oldest: Fortnite keyring, Novelty chicken toy, Ball game
Middle: Bubble sword, Chalk set, Ball game
Youngest: Door hanger, Rattle and last item still to be bought

Wafflehouse · 30/10/2021 11:59

I’m kind of with some of the pps about some of the other suggestions, anything novelty, to me, is straight away tat because the novelty will wear off pretty quick. Generally my rule is do I want to be having to keep picking this thing off the floor/out of the hoover, if no then I don’t buy it. I also don’t do stationary anymore because our house is coming down with various pens/pencils/erasers/notepads.

Every year I do Xmas socks, but they get worn all year round so not wasteful, a mini can of fizzy drink, snack (some years it’s pop tarts or a mini can of pringles) chocolate coins, new face cloth, bath bomb but not the ones with toys included, magazine/annual, hot chocolate bombs, soaps.

This year I’m adding a wallet for ds, seed bombs and a gift card; book token for dd and probably subway/greggs for ds as he’s in secondary now and wants to hang out with friends after school.

Gardeningtipsneeded · 30/10/2021 14:31

@Suggestions2021 exactly!

All tat is tut but not all tut is tat.

GrouchyKiwi · 30/10/2021 14:37

Lip balm
My kids love getting a new toothbrush in their stocking
Notebook
Pen
Keyring flashlight for your 13 year old?
We did water pistols one year, that was fun.
Fluffy socks
Cool gloves
Hair clips/bobbles
Scrunchies (my youngest has ringlet curls so scrunchies are the best in her hair and now all three love them)
Satsuma, apple, chocolate coins

WellThatsATurnipForTheBooks · 30/10/2021 14:38

sporty stuff - eg. sports socks, sweat bands, frisbee, drinks bottle, boot bag

arty stuff - eg. watercolour pencils (saw some in Tiger), Sharpie pens, post-it notes, sketch pad, mindful colouring books

Book - eg. joke book, annual, book of facts, sports trivia

Practical things - like others have said pants, socks, toiletries

Edibles eg. popcorn sauce, personalised Nutella/Marmite etc

mrsfeatherbottom · 30/10/2021 14:44

I say toot (NI).

DaisyWaldron · 30/10/2021 14:54

How old are the kids? Our stockings include some stuff which goes in the stockings every year and is put away after Christmas to reappear in stockings the following year: swanee whistles and kazoos, a fortune telling fish, and a set of finger puppets. They get lots of edible things: a chocolate orange, a clementine, chocolate coins, a chocolate reindeer and Santa, a salami or similar, a carton of juice. Everyone gets a magazine or small book. The rest of the stocking is fun but practical stuff, or things that will be used - nice stationery, toiletries, underwear, jewellery or makeup, phone chargers/earbuds, violin rosin etc. When they were younger, I got them film or tv tie in toothbrushes. This year I've got teenaged DD a laundry delicates bag shaped like a cat.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/10/2021 16:10

A pair of walkie talkies, one per child, set up to the same channel.

I once gave one child the Velcro hat bit of “Butt head”

Coco pops

Should have said, I gave the other child the balls for Butthead.
TooBigForMyBoots · 30/10/2021 16:16

Charger
Pants
Socks
£5
Choc coins
Bath bomb

TooBigForMyBoots · 30/10/2021 16:17

A clockwork toy in each for racing.

DockOTheBay · 30/10/2021 16:26

@TooBigForMyBoots

A clockwork toy in each for racing.
Now for me personally that is the epitome of tat - used once or twice, probably breaks and goes in the bin before New Year

I have tried to give mine things which will actually be used, or are consumable. E.g. books, socks, cuddly toys, stationery, chocolate santa (IIRC Aldi chocolate is mostly palm oil free)

hotmeatymilk · 30/10/2021 16:41

My parents were champions of “things we needed anyway, wrapped and put in a stocking = Christmas magic!” So, socks, knickers, deodorant, spot cream, goggles, etc – anything that was on our need list went in there…

Spendy but I got DD one of these at Easter and she loves the toy, they’re a good substitute for chocolate coins (the net bag and label tend not to be recyclable): playinchoc.com/

This year she’ll get one of those, a few oranges (she’s bananas for them), a magazine, and socks, pants, lots of art supplies, seeds, solid bubble bath bar, some small books, and an eco-friendly skipping rope from here: www.babipur.co.uk/

I’d rather do fewer, better, things and bulk it out with oranges and chocolate than non-recyclable “bin fodder” (excellent term from that PP!) like rubbery stretchy things and slime.

This is utter genius, DS is 20 but never too late to start.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 30/10/2021 17:20

Mine are six and three. They get a clementine, blind bags (playmobil/lego) to go with existing sets and some haribo. Schleich and holztiger animals/dinos. A bath bomb. A wind up figure of some description (as does everyone who stays for racing on the table before we eat the Christmas pudding). Crayons/pens/stickers/paint brushes. Socks and pants. Hair accessories for dc2. One of those crystal growing trees. Toothbrushes. A small book or 2 (they love the wimmelbuchs, especially fairy tale ones and they are great for car journeys). Favoured straws to drink milk through. There is always a soft toy on top and then an annual parked next to them.
