When to write letters to Santa

I'm trying to be a bit organised with Christmas this year. When do you normally ask your children to write their lists for Santa?
The children are 6 and 3. I'm worried if they write them now that they'll change their minds or want something else by Christmas. So, write them now or leave it a few more weeks?

Oh I learnt the hard way on this one a couple of years ago when she asked Santa for something we couldn't get a week before Xmas. Now she has a rolling Amazon wish list that she refreshes every now and then with supervision which we've given Santa access to In the run up to Xmas she writes Santa a letter wishing him a merry Xmas and thanking him in advance for whatever he gets her from the Amazon list.

We've explained that the list gets locked down at the end of November because Santa has a lot of sorting to do in December so can't be getting updated requests.

Santa doesn’t bring everything my kids ask for which solves this problem.

My sons just had his birthday last week so I casually asked him now that it's over what 3 things he would like to ask santa for this year lol, in the past we did letters about this sorta time of year and used the smyths catalogue for circling/ browsing x

As early as possible. And we also get her (only one of ours is big enough for it) to write lots of things on the list and Santa picks one to give her (although we often give her a few other things from the list ourselves). Santa brings one gift and the stocking, everything else is from us. This is also to save money as we can't afford to buy everything new all at once in December. We always say, we need to send it early as the elves need time to make the toys!

Ds wrote his last week - it's usually done in November but he took a notion to write it early. Have bought what he asked for so I can relax a bit now.

First weekend of advent, when we put the tree up. Tree up, decorate it, letters go under it ASAP. Once they're written, that's it!

Thanks everyone! The girls wrote their letters a few weeks ago now. I'm glad they did because lots of things seem to be out of stock already!

I tell the kids that Santa's got lead times and end of November is the hard deadline for lists. No changes, substitutions after that date.

We start talking about it. beginning of November and towards the end DD wrote her list. No changes possible afterwards.
