I got ds an oppo recently and he is very happy with it. It is a good size and seems to work really well I am impressed with it.

Google pixels are great.

languagelover96 · 28/10/2021 10:35

Iphone

xmasdealhunter · 28/10/2021 12:43

An iphone, but from musicmagpie. I've bought from there before and have been v impressed (especially because it looked brand new but didn't have the brand new price!)

We got DD11 an iPhone last year second hand from CEX - it wasn’t even the top rating for condition but went for it as it was a last minute present and it was immaculate. It’s an older model but fine.

DP liked the fact he can track the phone to keep an eye on her when she started walking to/from school or going out with her friends (she knew he was doing it) and lots of her mates have iPhones so they iMessage each other as well as using WhatsApp.

Tailrunner · 28/10/2021 12:50

That’s DD1 who is 11 not my 11th child btw Grin

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 28/10/2021 12:50

We’ll be going for iPhone because we already all have iPhones/iPads and have DD in the family group so can do find my iPhone, control purchases and screen time etc

ConsuelaHammock · 28/10/2021 14:18

My son got an iPhone XS last year for Xmas. Bought from mobile phones direct and think it was about £20 a month . They have good deals around Black Friday and are on topcashback websites too . I’m hoping he’ll use it for at least 4 years or so . After his contract expires I’ll get him a sim only deal for about £8-10 a month

ConsuelaHammock · 28/10/2021 14:20

Another good first phone is a Motorola.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 28/10/2021 14:21

My DD has my old Nokia. (Shes 10, it currently has no money on it as she doesn't need it, she just uses WhatsApp on the home Internet to contact friends)

SummerHouse · 28/10/2021 14:23

100% agree. About £130 new and I can't fault it. Myself and all my family also have Motorola. I wouldn't buy anything else.

Splashing out on ds age 13, He’s getting an I phone SE, Dh and I both have that phone and it’s great.

Livefortherain · 28/10/2021 14:41

I have got an iphone 6 off eBay for DS who is nearly 10.

I wanted to wait to get him a phone but he is starting to walk home on his own and I would rather be able to contact him.

Flidina · 28/10/2021 14:42

Second the Motorola phones, my daughter has the G power 8, paid £130, brilliant phone, so much so I'm replacing my phone with the same one.

wishingchair1 · 28/10/2021 15:49

Oppo A9 was really good deal. Nice android phone.

Thank you for the heads up on this, got a great deal on an iPhone 7 - hopefully it is in “very good” condition as stated!

xmasdealhunter · 29/10/2021 17:55

@GingerAndTheBiscuits glad I could help, we ordered a 'very good' phone for DD and it was immaculate, so fingers crossed yours arrives the same :)

UndertheCedartree · 29/10/2021 18:03

My DS just got a Google Pixel which he really likes.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 29/10/2021 20:02

Dd1 (12) has a Samsung galaxy S series (can't remember exact one), its dh old phone when he got an upgrade. She loves it, she can play all the games, download the apps she wants and has a decent enough camera.

We originally got a cheaper smart phone which wasn't great. So more cost effective to get a second hand better phone with the money you want to spend.

anon12345678901 · 29/10/2021 20:05

I'm getting an iPhone contract, probably the 11 so I can contact him if needed and vice versa. Mobilephonesdirect had great deals.

iwillinmyarse · 29/10/2021 20:12

Just be aware that WhatsApp will stop working on older phone models from Nov 01st (I think) there is a list of the affected phones online so may be worth a look before buying an older/refurbished model.

Its Androids running 4.4 and earlier. that will no longer run What's App.

To be fair 4.4 is really old and doesn't run Google Classroom either.

My 2 both have honors. They are excellent smart phones that are a fraction of the cost of an iPhone. We always pay outright for phones and never get contracts you will always end up paying more than the phone is worth. All phones are made in China anyway there's no difference other than a designer label/price tag. I can't stand it when I hear teenagers bragging about having the latest iPhone to their mates, I don't want my dcs growing up thinking that shit like that is important.
