Turkey just for Christmas night sandwiches x 6 people

Hi all,

Going to a holiday cottage and eating out Christmas Day.

DH and I are responsible for Christmas night supper, we always usually have Turkey sandwiches with red cabbage.

I want to continue this tradition, but unsure what size Turkey I need just for sandwiches for 6 people, with maybe some leftover meat for dogs.

Thank you!

Depends on what else is going into the sandwiches. Are you going to have any or all of stuffing, cranberry sauce, salad, mayonnaise, or are you saying the red cabbage goes into the sandwiches?

I would have thought your best bet was to buy a smallish turkey crown. You should get some good slices of breast meat from that, enough for six good big sandwiches.

Any chance you pay the restaurant for some extra turkey as a takeaway after the meal? That would save you the time and cost of cooking, and you could just ask them to give as much as they think you'd need?

Just get a small turkey crown from M&S, they go by serving size, so I'd go for serves 6-8 size, you might get away with the smaller serves 4-6 size. I've found their cooking instructions to be perfect.

Why can’t you just get some preslicec turkey off a deli counter

TurkeyCrown
All breast meat.

Thanks all.

Good shout re asking the restaurant, I might do that first as would save having to transport the Turkey for 4 hours in the car and then cooking the next day!

Why not just buy the turkey near the cottage and then cook the night before?

Or ditch the tradition for this year and stick a ham in the slow cooker before you leave for Christmas dinner ready to have with apple sauce and stuffing.

I would do this, or just ditch the turkey sandwich idea for this year and do something easier. The last thing you will want to do after coming home from a big Christmas lunch, is start cooking!

Is it a 3 course lunch? If so I wouldn't be hungry enough for big sandwiches later on, would probably just go for a cheeseboard and nibbles and people can have as much of little as they want.

Turkey fillet or small crown.

Small Turkey crown and ham cooked in the slow cooker before you leave?

Lidl sell a Turkey breast / joint which would be the perfect size for 6 for sandwiches.

You could pre-order a 6-8 person turkey crown to collect from an M&S near the holiday rental if there's one close by- we've done this before when away for Christmas and it's worked well.

I wouldn't think transporting a turkey for 4 hours in the car would be safe from a food hygiene perspective.
