we are going to an 'open house' afternoon Christmas party where there will be lots of children ( including quite little ones ) as well as adults. I have said I will take a pud but what should I take? would quite like to make something but I can't do pastry or anything comples. I'm not that good! or I could buy something?

A trifle? A cheesecake? In my experience, kids don't much like traditional Xmas pudding / cake.

I would do an iced 1-layer sponge. Maybe with choc chips in, and some christmassy-sprinkles on.
