Ideas for 90 yr old Grandad

My Grandad is 90 yrs old. He’s almost blind and his hearing isn’t great and he also has no teeth now.
Rum used to be my go to present for him but he’s unsteady on his feet now at the best of times and doesn’t drink much any more.
Any ideas what I can get him for Xmas??

A new scarf, hat and gloves set?
A nice aftershave?
Slippers

When my grandpa was alive and about that age he loved cashmere bed socks from White Company. We used to get him some each year. It wasn’t the sort of thing he would splash out on himself, but he wore them through as he had cold feet in bed.

Is there anything like that, a ‘nice’ version of something he uses that you could get?

Does he have the internet? My dad enjoys his Alexa, loves just being able to ask for his favourite music.
Alternatively make a goodie bag of rum fudge, favourite cake, marmalade etc, magazines about favourite interests, crossword book, dominos and cards to play with him.

An alexa or google nest mini if he has WiFi.

We've more or less given up buying big presents for my in-laws for similarly reasons, we buy my mother-in-law dark chocolate ginger, even though she will need to be reminded what it is every 5 minutes, dementias's a bitch. My father-in-law loves shortbread but he tends to get it from everyone. This year I've bought a musical gingerbread tin from Marks.

Alexa really is a good idea if he hasn't got one already.

As well as requesting favourite music you can play Radio 4 or whatever you want and set reminders, like ask Alexa to remind you of things, like when to take your medicine, or to pay a bill or ring a friend, or to remind you when a visitor is coming. It's great if memory is failing and for someone with failing eyesight as you can ask things like what is the weather like outside, what's the temperature etc. She will even tell you a joke or answer a question (which we might go and google). You can also set the volume high for your Grandad's poor hearing.

Alexa, warm and comfy cashmere socks and some chocolate. I hope he has a lovely birthday.:)

Op it might be worth looking at Google less well known than alexa but Google can make calls via Duo, Hey Google call Superaunt, and he doesn't need to move

Thanks everyone. He’s still pretty good mentally, it’s his body that is failing him. An Alexa would be a good idea if he had internet but unfortunately he doesn’t.
I think warm socks, hat, gloves etc might be the way forward. I might make a winter hamper type thing Smile

Can your grandfather read braille alphabet, given he is nearly blind? My grandmother really enjoyed reading books at that age, it was difficult for her to get out of the house because of health issues but she could see the world trough her books.

A good non-alcoholic rum, if he enjoys the flavour? Or alcoholic jellies (still alcoholic but less alcohol than a drink).

Audio books?
Long hot water bottle like this www.lakeland.co.uk/73826/Navy-Faux-Fur-Extra-Long-Hot-Water-Bottle

My Uncle is nearly 90 and I have had one of these done for
him:

I think there are also ones where you can have a name inscribed on an RAF aircraft.

SailorJayne · 25/10/2021 10:06

Clean Co non alcoholic spiced rum is absolutely lovely if he still wants the taste without being drunk! Mix with coke and you can’t tell the difference, it’s exactly like a Captain Morgan’s and coke.
