Where do you put stockings for teens?

Just pondering this - when DC were younger and still believed, stockings were snuck into their bedrooms by Santa when they eventually went to fricking sleep. They would then bring them through excitedly to open on our bed.

Now they are 12 and 14, in the last few years I have still snuck the stockings into their rooms but they don't share a room and so have opened them in their own rooms by themselves. (While we lie in our room slightly sad that they no longer come running through!) This seems a little unChristmassy to me and just wondering how other families with preteens/teens do stockings? Do you leave them eg by the tree to open together?

My DC have always hung theirs on the fireplace downstairs. I always brought them downstairs while their dad had a lie in and it was my special time with them on Christmas morning. The eldest is a teen now and they still open their stockings downstairs with me first thing before breakfast.

Mine are 17 and 20 and still have stockings on their bed, although we deliver them in the morning about 7 coz they go to bed a lot later than us.

SingingSands · 20/10/2021 16:49

Outside their bedroom doors. They still come into my bed to open them, although it's not at the crack of dawn any more!

TheChosenTwo · 20/10/2021 17:52

They now get put outside their bedroom doors at about 2am when I go to bed whether they’re asleep or not.

actiongirl1978 · 20/10/2021 17:56

On the fireplace where they have always hung. Stockings have always been opened with main presents altogether at the crack of dawn. We can usually open the presents, walk the dog and be drinking champagne by 8am

EerilyDisembodied · 20/10/2021 18:14

Still get put on their beds, they like the feel of a heavy stocking next to their feet when they wake. They open them in their own rooms and then come through around 7 to see us. Then we all go downstairs together.

Well, they shut their bedroom doors now Sad and go to bed v late so agreed last year to put by bedroom door but I think this year we'll do downstairs then it'll prolong present opening, as the older they get the smaller (but not cheaper unfortunately ) their present pile is, then they're sat bored watching me open mine.

lazylinguist · 20/10/2021 18:43

Fireplace downstairs

minimecantrollerskate · 20/10/2021 18:55

I always put DD's at the foot of her bed because she moves around so much in the night I can't put it on the bed.

She does know now that FC is not real, but my conversation went along the lines of, if you continue to believe you will still get a stocking Grin, so we are going to play the game and I will leave it on the floor still.

She still brought it in to me last year to open and she was 12 then so I am thinking she will do it again this year, although of course now she knows that I already know what is in there Grin.

bookitnow · 20/10/2021 19:01

Mine are the same ages as yours but still open stockings together despite not sharing rooms. They bring them through to me after 7am too despite knowing I bought it all! They stopped believing quite young at 5 or6 but sure do like their traditions😂.

DriftingBlue · 20/10/2021 19:04

At teens suggestion, the adults now get stockings as well. We hang the stockings by the fireplace and everyone gathers around to open.

mam0918 · 20/10/2021 19:12

stocking has always been downstairs... I never knew bedroom stockings were a thing until Mumsnet.

Even on tv, they are always hung on their fireplace or banister... we hang them on door handles though because otherwise, we could never get the bloody things to stay up lol.

Dilbertian · 20/10/2021 19:37

We used to hang the stocking on the bedpost at the foot of their bed. There would always be goodies to eat and drink in the stocking, as well as things to play with, because the idea was that they would open their stockings in their own beds and give us a lie-in Grin

Now that they are hulking great teenagers (and adults) who go to bed later than their parents, we only hang the stockings on the bedposts if their bedroom lights are switched off. Otherwise, we just leave it outside their bedroom door. And even though they can go downstairs and sort out their own breakfasts, we still put edibles in the stockings. It's part of the tradition.

bordersarebest · 20/10/2021 19:41

Mine has always had his in his room, left at the foot of his bed. He's a teen now but still brings it into our room & sits on the end of our bed opening it with the dog 😁
We have coffee in bed then downstairs to open all the main presents.

MegBusset · 20/10/2021 20:34

Ah, lovely to read all your teen stocking traditions Smile

Stockings (well, pillowcases) were always left in bedrooms when I was a child so I guess that's why I've continued the tradition. And in the year or two when they weren't quite sure about Santa, they enjoyed trying to set traps to catch him (which were fun to negotiate after a Christmas Eve prosecco or two)

I always had my stocking on my bed, even as a teen, so it hasn't occurred to me to do any different. We won't be changing anything for a while as Ds still believes but I can't imagine them not waking up to a stocking. DC hang their stockings on their bedroom door handle before bed so I suspect they will be left by the doors if the doors start to be closed, then they will still get them as soon as they wake.
I hope they will always wake to their stockings and come running into our room to open them, for as long as they live at home!

Fifthtimelucky · 20/10/2021 23:24

Our children are in their twenties and we still do what we have always us done. The stockings hang up downstairs on the fireplace. They contain small unwrapped presents from Father Christmas and all other presents are under the tree.

When I was a child, we each had a pillowcase on our bed, which contained all our presents.

WhatsitWiggle · 20/10/2021 23:33

DD 13, still snuck into her room once she's asleep. She's brought it in to open the last couple of years whereas before that she'd open in her room and then come in demanding to open all the tree presents

EerilyDisembodied · 21/10/2021 07:02

We always had them on the bed as children too, I still remember the excitement of waking and feeling it with my feet, so I assumed everyone did that.

Smallkeys · 21/10/2021 07:47

As they are up so late on the door but they still come in to open them . Problem is it gets later and later so this year I guess he might open them downstairs with us when he gets up. Struggling for cool ideas tho :-)

MrsMiddleMother · 21/10/2021 09:17

When I was kid they were always at the end of the bed but since mine were born stocking are downstairs with the main presents, so they wake up we go straight down and they open them first then the presents

JollyHostess · 21/10/2021 09:23

Transitioned from bed to outside door to living room near the tree over many years! Nicer for me as I can see them open them. Although I have find memories of lying in bed and hearing those excited little voices as they discovered each new thing! ❤️

Mine are in their 20s though!!

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 21/10/2021 09:23

The whole family has always had stockings. They're left and kept downstairs by the fireplace, and we always open them together just before the main presents.

"The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there..."

This is the same thing we did growing up. I find it so strange to leave a stocking at the foot of the bed. Always found it a bit sad as I assumed children would just sit in their own beds alone on Christmas morning opening their stockings, so I'm glad to hear they are least take them up to the parents beds to open them.
