What advent calendar have you got for your 8 year old?
(Apart from chocolate obviously)

We have had a Smiggle one in the past. Or popcorn. Or lego.

daisypond · 20/10/2021 18:57

We only ever get traditional cardboard ones and have done for years. We wouldn’t get ones with gifts inside, though we maybe would get a chocolate one - but they’re not as nice as the cardboard ones.

Lego city and lego friends

clare8allthepies · 20/10/2021 20:35

I’ve got my eye on a Minecraft one on Amazon. I was hoping to find a miraculous ladybug one but no such luck.

CallMeRisley · 20/10/2021 20:37

Harry Potter Lego (7yr old)

Thank you everyone

Any more ideas appreciated

I do a fill your own calendar every year for dds. Dd2 (9) will have a mix of fidget toys, scrunchies and stationary this year. Then I add a joke but this year I want to do some riddles or would you rather questions as dd2 is obsessed! Dd1 usually gets something small in the fill your own too but she prefers a nice treat over knick nacks. I buy things like lindt type balls (poundland), multipack of haribo/fudge bars or mini cans of fizzy.

Dd1 has a birthday in November so she gets the funko pop mini one as a gift. She's had harry potter, nightmare before christmas and this year is five nights at freddys. They cost around £40-50 so its definitely a gift not one I could just buy her. But these are one thing she likes to collect and display.

The kids get cheap chocolate ones here

NigelSlatersXmasTaters · 20/10/2021 22:08

Oh sorry. You said apart from chocolate! There are fossil and gemstone ones out there that look good

Yellow85 · 20/10/2021 22:13

I’ve pre/ordered an activity calendar for my 2 to share from a little online store. A hand wrapped gift for each day - various forms of crafts and such.

Hoping I can use some of it to bulk out grandparents gifts!

nailslikeknives · 20/10/2021 22:23

We have a fabric one and fill it ourselves.
I had a playmobil one one year. It was so disappointing - who wants to wait 24 days for Santa, the reindeer and sleigh? GrinGrinGrin
So on day 3, the kids and I ripped it apart to get to the good stuff!

We now do the fill-your-own every year with a mixture of choc coins, 20p coins and stationery bits.

Another vote for fill your own

UndertheCedartree · 20/10/2021 22:44

I often have got my 2 the picture ones and they've loved them - always so beautiful. My DD was 8 last Christmas and had the Crayola one which was great. As well as the stationery there was a colouring or activity page every day. She has also enjoyed the Playmobil and Lego Friends calendar.

SoftSheen · 20/10/2021 22:45

Lego!

ichundich · 20/10/2021 22:48

I'm going to fill my own - mostly with unusual sweets and the odd bit of Lego, fidget toy and pairs of socks.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 20/10/2021 22:54

Instead of the Lego specific advent calendars, we buy the winter village piece and divide it into 24 parts.

Stompythedinosaur · 20/10/2021 23:02

A gemstone one and one where you get a Christmas charm to add to a charm bracelet (dp and I failed to tell each other we had got one, hence there being two calendars).

SuperAunt08 · 20/10/2021 23:12

We got a Disney book one last year which went down well. Each day had a small Christmas themed Disney book which we read at bedtime. They can then be put back and reused the next year but I’ve bought a similar Marvel one for this year.

ponkydonkey · 20/10/2021 23:13

I got a Lindt one this year 😬 he'll love it

Blogdog · 20/10/2021 23:14

I’ll be getting a Pokémon one. Have a Pokemon super fan and last year’s characters have been played with all year.

Build-a-Bear have their lovely Advent Calendar available & are currently allowing you to stack discount codes.
JOLLY25 gives 25% off (applies to anything on the website I believe) and works with the code FREEDELIVERY. Making it less than half price 🙂 The advent calendar is super cute! It comes with 6 little bears and lots of different clothes etc to dress them with. 🐻 Worth it I think, for £19.25! 🎄

@Almostmenopausal please can you share whatever other code you used with JOLLY25 to get the price down to £19.25? I can only get it to £29.25, can’t find another code to save £10

This year my kids asked for the Marvel- The Avengers Lego Advent (Son, 14) which I bought on Amazon when it had a discount, and Roblox (Daughter, 11) which was way more expensive than I anticipated, at £38. I pre-ordered that over a fortnight ago, came yesterday. I'm secretly hoping I can find another Roblox one on a special offer/discount so I can send that one back. (Cheeky, I know... but I really don't care 🤣🤣)

My kids do love these types of advent calendars and they know that if they ask for them it comes out of their Christmas gift budget or they can buy them off their pocket money if they wish to.

My daughter also had a fidget advent calendar on her wishlist, until she spied the Roblox.
