My current “go to” first birthday present is a reusable “Happy Birthday Name” banner. There’s some lovely ones on Etsy at a variety of price points.

This age, there is usually a lot given by close family. I love @HoHoJ0's idea of a good quality reusable birthday name banner, that is genius as every year you would be remembered for sending it, it is genuinely useful and unlikely anyone else will think of it.

Both my kids loved bathtime at this age, so maybe a squirty plastic book, and a simple toy to play with in the bath and a cuddly bath robe?

My go-to present is always a book, preferably something for when they are a little older. Eg The Singing Mermaid by Julia Donaldson. £5 in p/b and worth every penny

Xylophone. My 4 year old got one on her first birthday & it's still getting use.

The birthday banner is a great idea.

Then for Christmas you could get her something like a book subscription, or make a photo album for her of her family and friends etc babies love looking at photos of people, and it's a nice memento.

On the idea of books, you can personalise a board book on Photobox I think. We did one for my eldest where we picked some nice photos and used them to tell a story. You’re guaranteed that nobody will have bought the same book!

At one year old I’d probably get a little 18m+ DUPLO set, she will have lots of baby toys and it’ll be something your friend can bring out later in the year. Or a bath toy, she’ll be ready for some ducks and a net or something along those lines. I got bought so many duplicate books and soft toys.

My DS was given a star projector that plays music for him room last Christmas. It's been used every single day and didn't contribute to the toy mountain
