Is anyone starting their Christmas food shopping?

I don't think I can face doing a traditional big shop in the week before Christmas any more.

I have decided that we always buy too much and the food seems to hang around forever. So bring organised I have started a list and I'm going to buy one or two things a week instead. I have bought a frozen Turkey crown. Pigs in blankets and prawns. I think really if I didnt buy anything else I have Christmas dinner sorted ( kind of!).

If i get the other important things as I see them then leave the money essentials until the last few weeks. Hopefully my teens dont decide to cook a prawn stir fry, what could go wrong? I'm hoping to spend a lot less two this way as I will be more focused. I hope

I bought brandy snaps yesterday, but that's as far as I've got Grin

Yafilthyanimal · 17/10/2021 14:42

Yep

AutumnLeafy · 17/10/2021 14:43

I'm going to get a frozen turkey crown in and start stockpiling pringles

Blackopal · 17/10/2021 14:46

Yes, I just booked the restaurant Grin
I have no intention of shopping and cooking and cleaning this year. Never done this before so hopes it goes well.

IncessantNameChanger · 17/10/2021 14:46

I used to love going out a few days before Christmas and spending around £200. Now that feels insane. It felt much better today just buying prawns in smaller £24 pop to Sainsbury's.

Stockpiling pringles is part of Christmas tradition. Buy them ultra early, find out they expire before Christmas. Then the kids find them and eat them all in November. Or is that just us?but bless my kids they leave the empty packets in situ so you dont realise they have all gone until you fancy some on go to sit down and relax in front of a film with said empty tube

We’ve done this every year for the past 10 years or so. Much less stressful (hate the crowds at Christmas time), and spreads the cost nicely.

Only bought one thing so far: some chocolates. Most of our treats will be homemade - this year we are making the cake/pudding, mincemeat for mince pies, marmalade for eating and for the ham, chilli jam, mini sausage rolls, one lot of gingerbread stuffing (we also do a bog standard sage and onion mix stuffing) plus I’ll bake an assortment of biscuits throughout December. So all we really need is the booze which we will buy online, the turkey and gammon which we’ll order from the farm shop, and the veg which will come in our veg delivery. A pannetone will be bought from ALDI at some point when we do a top-up on essentials.

I’ll buy some sweet treats from back home (Denmark) in late November and that will be us sorted.

SchoolForScoundrels · 17/10/2021 14:54

I bought all the christmas chocs / crisps / snacks / mince pies in early November one year. All gone by mid December so decided it was not a good idea.

I have however booked my online xmas shop with Waitrose.

Not2daySatan · 17/10/2021 14:54

I bought a frozen turkey crown yesterday. I normally buy fresh but wanted to make sure we had it. I might buy some frozenpigs In blankets as tesco does the gluten free ones. anything else can wait.

PiffleWiffleWoozle · 17/10/2021 14:57

Have ordered meat and cheese box to come just before Christmas. Don’t really do the sweet stuff but will buy some nearer Christmas if still available

stairgates · 17/10/2021 14:57

I've bought a Xmas pudding! As everyone else if I buy the other bits they just get eaten so may need to brave it in December :)

RainingYetAgain · 17/10/2021 14:59

Made the Chtistmas cake yesterday. Bought some mincemeat and ordered the turkey, pigs in blankets and sausage meat.

HollyandIvyandAllThingsYule · 17/10/2021 15:01

Oh goodness forgot the cheese! Will be bought at farm shop and our local cheesemaker. Oh I can’t wait!!

Inextremis · 17/10/2021 15:08

I started a while back - I add €20 of stuff to the weekly shop for Christmas. So far I have the ham, cocktail sausages, streaky bacon, stuffing mix, cranberry sauce, and the booze collection has begun - with port, 'special' whiskey, two bottles of white wine, spiced rum, and some Fireball liqueur. It makes it all far less painful and I end up just having to get the fresh veg and dairy stuff in Christmas week. It satisfies my inner hoarder to see it building up, too!

Nsky · 17/10/2021 15:11

Just going to try and find freezer space for chick crown, I live alone and hopefully going out for Christmas, tho I love the spare meat!
So will buy pigs in blankets, extra nice stuffing in early!
I don’t drink, and hate xmas pud

languagelover96 · 17/10/2021 15:12

I'm going to Sainsburys tomorrow to see if I can find anything.

IggyAce · 17/10/2021 15:14

I’ve got a bag in our room that I add anything I buy with the weekly shop, so far I’ve got a lovely selection of biscuits, mixed nuts, crackers, wine, and Prosecco. We have pigs in blankets in the freezer and I’m going to clear a freezer draw so I have room to get the joint of beef and some party food.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/10/2021 15:19

Only dried fruit for puds so far, but will soon be buying streaky bacon and nice fat sausages for the Ps in Bs. Always make my own, v quick and easy.

Sounds lovely and my kind of shopping.

I make quite a lot. Delia’s Christmas Chutney from the Christmas Book. You would like that HollyandIvy if you don’t have one. I picked up a second hand one for a friend in the charity shop. I kicked myself for not having made this before last Christmas. It is delicious and we will be making double this year for gifts.
My boys went to a Steiner Kindergarten in Scotland so we aways have Stollen, Spekulatius/ Spekulaas as well as Christmas Cake. Mincemeat we have some of last years but I might make a new batch too as I often give some to a friend or two.

DH went to get a bit of shopping and he went to Booths by request so now I have my Christmas Book to plan the yummy extras.
We order the turkey from a local butcher and veg is added to our veggie box order if we want something in particular. Otherwise we could go to the poultry auction. Baking usually starts in half term but I retired last year so can make it whenever I want this year. Old habits die hard though and I will probably start half term week with the Christmas Cakes. Five to make this year. I love the smell of Christmas baking.

Angel2702 · 17/10/2021 16:06

I always buy the long life stuff when it appears in the shops and buy as I go from September onwards.

Goshitstricky · 17/10/2021 16:13

I have been buying some thing for Christmas with the weekly shop for a few weeks now, either a 2ltr bottle of coke or similar or a tin of shortbread or something like that.
I also have 5 trays of pigs in blankets in the freezer as I saw them on sale so got them now for Christmas lunch.

I have crazy anxiety about everything this year so I'm hyper preparing.

Theunamedcat · 17/10/2021 16:14
