He’s for the 4th nativity set. Like the 3rd, he’ll be going for Gdcs’ school fair raffle in late November. Only Mary left to sew up now.

At a Dsis’s suggestion, the first set for little Gdcs had a neat little pile of donkey poo added, for authenticity in the stable. A pattern for little holly berries, in brown instead, worked remarkably well.
How can you tell I’m a lot more fond of knitting than housework? 😄

What a lovely donkey!

dinosaurblues · 17/10/2021 11:50

Love it. Great work.

GreyhoundG1rl · 17/10/2021 12:40

Oh my God, that's amazing! You knitted him?!

Redsquirrel5 · 17/10/2021 12:45

That is gorgeous.
Can you point me in the right direction for pattern please? We have a Travelling Nativity for church/ church school and it seems to have travelled and not come back. No one knows we’re it went Christmas 2019. We had Joseph, Mary x2 baby Jesus and the donkey. I would like to make another.

VirgilStarkwell · 17/10/2021 13:10

Adorable! 🥰

Shelleyjelly80 · 17/10/2021 13:15

I love knitted nativities! I have one made by a relative and it is one of my favourite things, I can only just about knit a square never mind a whole 'Knitivity' and really admire skilled knitters.

Luckytattie · 17/10/2021 13:15

So cute! I love it

Hello - the main pattern is in the Jean Greenhowe Christmas Special booklet - the donkey is in the Christmas Treasures ditto. I think they’re both still readily available online.

Her patterns are crystal clear and very detailed, and you don’t need knitting skills beyond cast on and off, k, p, simple inc. and dec. If you follow the instructions exactly, the things do turn out more or less exactly like the illustration.
Admittedly it is very time consuming, though!

This is the main pattern pic.

Main figures are about 20cm/8 inches tall, BTW. Bases are cardboard, 2 circles of e.g. cereal packets stuck together for strength. You need a pair of compasses!

I made the first one because of wanting an unbreakable one for (then) very little Gdcs. They always love playing with it.

Thank you all for kind comments!

That's fabulous, Shelley

Coronawireless · 17/10/2021 14:11

The donkey poo sounds fab!
Amazing - well done!!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/10/2021 14:30

That’s brilliant, @Shelleyjelly80!

Actually I think I should change my username to Knittinglikemymother, not that I think she ever did as much as I do now. (Retired old granny.).

This was another Christmassy thing I finished recently, also destined for Gdcs’ school fair, if they would like it.

They'll snap your hand off, but I doubt it'll sell for anything like what it's worth. It's beautiful.
PerkingFaintly · 17/10/2021 14:41

That's magnificent! The look on his little face!

PerkingFaintly · 17/10/2021 14:44

Or, indeed, her little face.

I'm not sure how one sexes knitted donkeys...

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/10/2021 14:54

@GreyhoundG1rl, it’ll be for the raffle so no dosh involved - not for me anyway.

I dare say I could have tried making his bits (if indeed he is a he, I haven’t asked) but the little pile of poo for donkey number one was probably adventurous enough!

Last year I did manage Bits for a Cheeky Bagpiper, that went to auction on eBay for Prostate Cancer. Funnily enough I found that the sporran pattern adapted very nicely for his goolies. 🙂
