Have you ever done a wreath making workshop?

Just checked some local options here, they’re around £70pp! I was quite shocked, I offered to take my friend to one but I wasn’t expecting to pay £140 Grin
But I really want to try and I think it will be fun. I’m not very creative or artistic so I’m hoping if mine falls to bits before it’s off the table they might give me a spare made up one?!
Anyone ever done their own and want to show me a photo?
Just to add, I’m not interested in buying the materials and doing it myself at home, I really want to go elsewhere and be given what I need. I don’t begrudge the cost in the slightest, I buy one from the Christmas tree farm every year and pay £30-£40 so in my head I think I was expecting to pay that considering I was actually making it myself Grin the cost is beside the point though, I’ll pay whatever it is, just want to have a look at others’ creations Flowers

It’s around £20 here

Are you in London?!

TheChosenTwo · 10/10/2021 18:53

Surrey/hants border. I literally googled wreath making work shop near me and the first one I looked at was in Surrey, the second in hants!

Here is my effort at a workshop. Sorry it's not a great photo but I don't really want to show my front door! All the stuff needed, plus a demo, help and prosecco! It was about £50 for the session.

Try your local adult education provider, usually around £20-25 including some materials,

TrainforSpeed · 10/10/2021 18:57

I really enjoyed mine. Work got someone in to do it for us as a wellbeing exercise. Even though I did enjoy it and was proud of the result I don't think I'd have spent my own money on it.

Ours cost £60 per head about 3 years ago.

SuziLikeSuziQ · 10/10/2021 18:58

Sorry for the random banjo photo, thought I'd deleted it! 🤣

TheChosenTwo · 10/10/2021 19:01

Very nice @SuziLikeSuziQ - was it tricky?
I’ll look more into it @LIZS - I was just a bit Shock initially!
Jesus @TrainforSpeed - I’m school staff and we tend to not get eff all in terms of well-being Grin that was nice of your workplace to organise.
Every year we buy a wreath and I think, “oh I’d love to have a go,” so I’m taking the plunge this year.

About £40 here in Cambs. Last year she sent out the kits so we could join in via Zoom and had participants as far away as Scotland, so am wondering if there will be online provisions this year too. Might be worth looking out for?

Isthisjustnormal · 10/10/2021 19:03

I did one a few years ago: it was a charity fundraiser and iirc £45/50 - Surrey here and I’d say 40-70 is the going rate to include mulled wine/snacks. I did love my wreath and we had access to lots of unusual ‘extras’ that meant each one was very tailored. I would look at the style of the wreaths before you book: mine was with quite a naturalistic florist so lots of hedgerow type greenery, natural extras, not much in the way of brights/Christmas ribbons etc. I held onto some of the extras and used the techniques I learnt to make a lovely wreath using the base and some foraged greenery last year!

SuziLikeSuziQ · 10/10/2021 19:04

Thanks! Not too bad, no. Deciding beforehand which pieces to go where and then twisting a wire round, wrapping the stems of the pieces against the original frame thing. Some people were finished quickly but I took my time. Not entirely pleased with it, I think it looks a bit odd, but I was proud to display it! I'd love to join another workshop this year if they're running again.

I'm school staff too Smile
TheChosenTwo · 10/10/2021 19:06

On further investigation there’s not much else around relatively locally and definitely not cheaper than £65 per person so I guess that’s just the going rate.
They can stick their grim mulled wine though Envy
I would prefer a more natural one over anything too bright, it’s more my style and in keeping with all our Christmas decorations anyway.

@TrainforSpeed this isn’t the first time I’ve realised I’m probably in the wrong school Grin

I'm the business manager and I set a staff wellbeing budget every year.

Scarby9 · 10/10/2021 19:12

Yes- 5 years ago, probably.
It cost £50 but was for a charity and included a casserole meal, so presumably not the price of the wreath making itself.
We really enjoyed it, and I was proud of what I created. I am not at all flower arrangery but she took us step by step and you couldn't really go wrong.

thefirstmrsrochester · 10/10/2021 19:14

£50 for the workshop here, Glasgow. One of the highlights of the run up to Christmas for me to be honest. I try to do a workshop each year.

TheChosenTwo · 10/10/2021 19:16

That’s lovely @TrainforSpeed Smile
Our SBM tells us to order our own glue sticks when we run out Grin fun during Covid times when they had to have one each to avoid sharing resources and were budgeted to go through 2 each per year!! (Not likely with the amount of cutting and sticking they’re expected to do! Anyway, I feel I’m getting sidetracked…)
@Scarby9 this gives me hope! I’m not arty or crafty at all, I have very little patience for fiddly things but I think my friend and I will have a good laugh doing this, she’s very arty and fiddly so will be excellent at this!

My husband is very anti wreath so my very creative sister has just made me a Christmas pudding themed one from wool which he can’t possibly object to .

Cindi85 · 10/10/2021 19:26

I've just booked on to one for £45 but have seen them for £60 and £120!! Maybe shop around, mine was a local florist

Yes, you're at the wrong school! The only time teachers buy any resources at my school is when they aren't organised enough to get the order in in time or decide it's easier than going through the authorisation process. Obviously, it's public money, we have to take care of it but I get very cross when I'm told teachers have to buy their own resources. They really don't and shouldn't.

How/why can a Christmas wreath provoke such strong feeling?
TheChosenTwo · 10/10/2021 19:59

Dh is the driving force behind buying the wreaths every year, I always say not to bother as how long do we spend outside our front door looking at it Grin
One of them is with a florist, im guessing the prices are pretty consistent now that I’ve looked at quite a few, there’s nothing super local (in my own town but a few in the next towns along) but everything I’ve seen is between £65-£75 ish so probably just the going rate now.
Ahh train I know you’re right! I often just order my own things for my 1:1 student as I need it instantly (thank you Amazon prime!) and not in a week or two but I don’t know I need it until the day before because no one has told me what we’re doing!! (Support start not a teacher who does any of the planning)
I’m also interested in the anti wreath DH Grin

OP posts:
TheChosenTwo · 10/10/2021 20:00

To clarify, I’m not ‘interested in him’, more curious about what he’s taken so strongly against Grin

OP posts:
Floralnomad · 10/10/2021 20:00

@TrainforSpeed , we’ve been married 30+ yrs and he’s always been like it , his parents are the type that take a wreath to the crematorium / cemetery at Christmas to put on the grave so I think it’s that association .

EerilyDisembodied · 10/10/2021 20:03

Surrey/Hants border here too, I'm doing one which is £35 including prosecco and nibbles. It sold out in two days though.
